Kael stood on the balcony of his chamber, overlooking the courtyard below, where hundreds of men assembled under the stern gaze of their officers.

His decision to send 4,000 troops in response to the King's call had been made, and now the machinery of war churned into motion.

The sharp bark of orders from Alexander of Ariston cut through the din, his voice carrying over the cacophony with ease. "Fall into line, you lazy dogs! The King doesn't wait for the likes of you to find your boots! Shields up! Test those straps properly, or they'll fail you when the enemy doesn't."

Kael allowed himself a faint smile.
