Bab 60: Excruciating Escape

Even after grabbing the ledge and breaking it to bits my momentum was still too fast! It was destiny, it had to be!!!

CRACK CRACK

My breathing was hurried. I wasn't sure it could be called breathing. The pain that had assaulted my entire body was unbearable. It was entirely unbearable.

So, how was I bearing it?

"AAARGH!" It was by screaming, by screaming my heart out. It was the only way I knew to lessen the pain. But my mind only turned blurry and my thoughts seemed to have been consumed by unfamiliar anxiety.

It reminded me of something… Professor Requiem, that's what it reminded me of.

His final day, the day I killed him. His pitiful figure hiding in the shadows. The fear of the light.

I could feel that anxiety and I could feel that burning sensation. Was this mutation?

My heart skipped another beat, but I wasn't having a heart attack. The exact opposite, I had a brief moment of lucidity while feeling my bones restoring themselves into place.

"Wher- Where did he go?!" I heard something. But my head was ringing. I was forgetting something…

My brother's face briefly crossed my mind.

I wanted to know what happened to him… why was I living alone in this world? What happened to my parents? My sister, my brother? Where were they?

It was insane to think about when experience near-death combined with the risk of mutation, but my mind remained an unearthly calm.

"He is right there you stupid motherf*cker!" Another man shouted just as I regained my vision. The stinging light was also receding and although my body felt beyond painful I could move.

BANG!

Just as I jumped up a shot landed on where I had been positioned.

BANG BANG

"Urgh-!" A bullet pierced my back as I fled towards another building. This was the second time I could thank the slum-like architecture.

BANG BANG

Before these two new shots could hit me, I burst the nearby building's door out of its hinges. I stumbled in the excruciating process and the bullets missed me by a wide margin. The people inside the building were the only ones left shocked.

What they were seeing was a broken young man covered in a mix of black and red blood after all. It was normal for them to be shocked and frightened.

Hm? No that wasn't quite right… they were pulling out weapons!

My heart- There was not even time for my heart to skip beats!

I sprinted off towards the staircase. Most of the buildings had the same basic architecture even if the room layouts might be different. That was normal, these houses were once provided by the subterranean government.

It felt like with each heavy step my bones were being crushed anew. Ah! The pain was the only thing that occupied my mind! Not even the people waving guns as they chased me entered my mind for a moment.

BANG BANG BANG

Only a moment.

I climbed the stairs all the way to the top. I really had to get away from these things on the case I fell again but...

To exit the roof I had to climb a ladder, which was actually perfect for me.

The people chasing after me were mostly below grade 2, so my speed with this injured body was not any less than their own. They were only able to catch a glimpse of my feet as I upped the ladder and started to close the hatch behind me.

BANG

"F*ck! Climb Climb Climb!" Those were the final words I heard as the iron hatched closed for good. I sat on the damn thing while holding a tight grip on the opening mechanism.

After much thumping and hitting on the hatch all I could hear was the sounds of bullets. My bum became quite perturbed, but thankfully the hatch held even while multiple shots continued to ring out.

After a short period of silence, I jumped to my feet. The hatch was not safe. These people could simply start climbing up through other buildings and then I'd be screwed.

The roofs were like a boundless plateau. Few buildings had an extra story and a couple of them had slightly varying heights but overall the area was pretty flat and laid out rather closely.

The buildings that had stairwells leading all the way up into the roof were the only ones that could provide some basic cover. Using these however, was not entirely safe since I'd have to get out eventually.

The best plan was in fact to head back down. Although I would have to get down with my battered body, the short period of incoming mutation had somehow recovered part of my injuries.

The only downside was that I felt horrible. I was tired, my body felt heavy, it was unbearable. The word unbearable was also becoming unbearable at this point.

But the thugs weren't all that dumb, the moment I got off the hatch was also the moment they opened it. So I did what any insane individual would do.

"Die-!" The thug who came out gun-toting was forced to reassess his rash words when he found that I was not directly in front of the hatch. I was in fact behind the lid which had just opened.

I grabbed his head and though unfamiliar with the technique, tried to twist it.

"Wh-" Even if I was an amateur the man was two grades below me. Kaiser's ability to distinguish the grade of those beneath him was apparently not something unique to him provided my recent thoughts.

The man started to fall but not before I grabbed his gun.

Bang! Bang!

I started shooting down into the hatch hole from behind the lid without concern for whether I was hitting anyone. Fear was enough on its own.

I closed the hatch after that though this time I took off towards the edge of the building.

As long as they thought I was still watching the hatch it was enough for me. I just had to… climb back down… It was a steep drop.

My vision blacked out for a second.

I caught myself just in time before starting to fall off the edge of the building. I had to be faster. Regenerating so many injuries must have been taxing on my body but… I had to climb down.

I grabbed the edge and dropped onto a ledge. Not only that, but I did this again and again until reaching the third floor. The increase in blood loss it cost me was hefty but, I fought back the grogginess. Well, if there was to be a bright side, at least I could hardly feel the pain anymore.

Now I just had to jump between ledges and sneak out of their territory, and I had to do it quickly. If the wastes were planning on attacking the library… we would need to move forward with the attack schedule.

Plus, until finding out who sent the request, it was very well possible that the wastes weren't the only ones with a good chance to acquire their goals.
