The three of us didn’t get our answer until four weeks later when Danita invited us to her house for Labor Day brunch. Linda, Karen and I had each connected in some way prior to the brunch but Danita had been absent from our gatherings.

If I didn’t know the address like I know my own phone number, I would have thought I was walking into the home of a stranger.

My friend had braces, shoulder length red hair, and could grab a T-shirt and go without being embarrassed most days. The person who opened the door and greeted me had a short black pixie cut and straight teeth. Her chest looked like the women from the 1950’s who wore bullet bras all the time and looked like their breasts were concealed weapons.
