My head thudded in my ribcage as I rolled up my blankets. Would Lance heed my counsel? Would this contentious meeting be the last time I would see him?

“I do not like this,” Crow said. “There was something different about him. He’s got a hunted look.”

“He’s worn out his welcome most places. Even at the Hunkpapa fires, most likely. I have to leave. Dull Lance knows James is at the farm alone.”

“Do you want me to go with you?”

“No, you’re needed here. You saddle Patch while I go talk to Cuthan.”

“What about the watcher Dull Lance told us about?”

We decided he would be on the hill behind the house. When the moon hid her face behind a cloud, we left the cabin one at a time. Crow crossed Strobaw’s Crick to go around the east hill.
