The original personality of the individual is effectively killed and replaced with a new personality that's deeply loyal to the Elder Vampire who turned them, while maintaining the memories of the original personality.

Vampires can slightly change their appearance to more closely resemble humans, so a human who was turned into a Vampire could serve as a highly effective spy for the Elder Vampires. However, appearance is the only thing that they can revert to the same, their abilities are completely different...they can no longer use the Magic and Skills that they could before they were turned to a Vampire, so getting someone to show you their Magic is the easiest way to determine whether they're human or a Vampire," Replied Lucifer.
