Bab 79: Egoist
They spent about an hour simply chatting with each other as Esme went to make some food for Bella and Alex.
"Uh, I don't need anything," Alex said flustered at having the older woman get up to make him something.
Esme simply turned and gave him a soft smile.
"It's all right, I enjoy making food, you wouldn't mind me making you something would you?" Esme asked as she looked at Alex, her soft smile still in place.
'How can I say no when you look at me like that' Alex thought as he slunched his shoulders and nodded.
"Thank you"
Jasper who had sat next to him now simply gave Alex a smile and muttered.
"You can't reject Esme huh, maybe we should use her to get you to listen sometimes"
Alex furrowed his brows and turned to stare at Jasper.
"You wouldn't dare"
"Try me," Jasper said as the corners of his lips twitched.
"So what do you eat? I've seen you eat human food before and Edward said they can't eat anything besides blood"
Bella asked as she turned to face Alex.
Alex nodded his head and gave his answer.
"I can eat both human food and drink blood like a vampire but I don't need either."
Bella's facial expression turned confused once more.
"What do you mean you can do both but need none, how is that even possible. Your heart is clearly pumping blood and that should logically need energy, where would you get that." Bella asked as she stared at Alex intently.
Alex scratched his head.
"I don't know. I mean I'm a mythological creature, Bella, you can't really expect me to know everything, some things just don't make logical sense compared to a human. I consider my body closer to one frozen in time rather than one that's living."
Carlisle made a humming noise as he rubbed his chin.
"I do have a theory."
Everyone turned to face the doctor, awaiting his next words.
"I would very much like to hear about it," Alex said as he nodded toward the man.
"Energy is never lost, it's merely transformed from one form to another, it could simply be that you don't lose any energy at all but that would also contradict a lot of other things, an example would be that when you use any physical force you are turning your energy into mechanical force which you shouldn't have a way to absorb back," Carlisle said as he continued making a thinking pose.
Alex hummed and then asked another question.
"Could it be that I'm just the perfect being?"
*Slap*
And Bella's slap didn't take long, no it could even be said to be instant.
"You? perfect? I don't think those words should ever be in the same sentence Alex" Bella said as she gave him a closed-eyed smile.
"Calm down, it was only a thought, Bella."
"You do not need to have thoughts like that, your ego was bad enough in Phoenix, we don't need you to get any further in that direction"
Alex made a face as if he was being falsely accused.
"What did I even do in Phoenix Bella, I don't think I ever had an ego issue," Alex asked as he faced his sister.
"Oh right, the guy who used to change his girls every two days because he got bored," Bella said as she looked at him, looking like she was waiting for his refusal to slam down on him further.
"That, I don't remember that ever happening. It's not true" Alex said as he turned his face away.
Bella simply gave a light chuckle as she grabbed her phone and after a few seconds of fiddling she showed him the screen.
Because of Alex's position, and the fact that everyone besides Bella was a vampire, they could all see and hear what was happening on the video that was on Bella's phone.
It was a younger Alex being asked by Renee who the girl she saw him with at the mall was.
"Ah I already forgot, I just took her on a date, wasn't that important"
The whole video showed how uncaring the past Alex in Phoenix was.
"What if that was your sister and she had gone out with someone and they forgot her the next day," Renee asked him in the video.
Bella could even be heard giggling as she recorded the entire thing.
"That wouldn't happen, no one would be able to leave my sister considering how good she looks, she's just like me after all."
And the video recording ended.
"So who was that on the recording Mr. I'm not an egoist?" Alice asked as he smirked at Alex.
"I don't know, never seen him before," Alex said in return.
Bella gave Alice her phone who brought it over in front of Alex's face.
"Do you need glasses? isn't that clearly you?" Alice asked, her smirk has only gotten wider.
Alex shook his head.
"Never seen his before. Was that your past boyfriend or something Bella? You shouldn't give your time to people like that"
'Never say it was you no matter what and you'll be fine' Alex thought to himself as he gave a minute nod at his own genius.
Emmet finally couldn't hold back as he started laughing like a madman.
Steps were heard after Emmet finally got a hold of himself.
"Dinners ready!" Esme said as she came to the living room.
Bella and Alex nodded as they headed to the dining table.
Rosalie had headed to her room upstairs earlier and Emmet went to give her company while the rest sat around the dinner table.
"So, are you super strong like Edward?" Bella asked as she ate a chicken drumstick.
Alex nodded as he looked at Edward and then smirked.
"Oh I don't know, We could always spar sometimes Edward, would keep our senses sharp"
Edward's brow twitched as he remained silent.
"I don't think that would be necessary Alex," Alice said from where she was sat next to him.
"You're ruining the fun, Alice, I don't ruin your fun," Alex said as he took a spoonful of rice.
"My fun doesn't involve someone's head going through tree trunks," Alice said.
'I wasn't even planning on going that far' Alex thought.
