Bab 24: Shadows in the Depths
The oppressive waters of the Abyss pressed down on Daniel and Mira as they swam away from Korrath's lair. The fragment in Daniel's possession pulsed steadily, a quiet reminder of the task ahead. The information Korrath had provided painted a bleak picture—a path through dangerous territories, including the Maw of Dread, where fragments of power were rumored to be scattered.
Daniel glanced at Mira, her expression pensive as she processed the Guardian's warnings. "You've been quiet," he said, breaking the silence.
"Just thinking," Mira replied, her tone distant. "Korrath's help comes at a steep price. The Abyss seems to take more than it gives."
Before Daniel could respond, his system chimed:

"Something's coming," Daniel said, his voice tense. He scanned the murky waters, his vision straining to detect movement.
Mira gripped her blade tightly, her eyes darting around. "Stay sharp. Predators here don't announce themselves unless they're already certain of their kill."
A ripple in the water drew their attention. From the shadows emerged a group of sleek, eel-like creatures with glowing blue stripes along their sides. Their eyes gleamed with intelligence, and their movements were unnervingly coordinated.

"They hunt in packs," Mira whispered. "Be ready."
The largest of the Strikers surged forward, its elongated body cutting through the water like a spear. Daniel activated Hydro Dash, narrowly avoiding the creature's snapping jaws. Mira countered with a swift strike, her blade slicing through the water in a burst of bioluminescent energy.

Daniel's instincts took over as he dodged another attacker, his fins propelling him backward. He activated Ripple Shockwave, sending a pulse of energy through the water. Two of the Strikers were stunned momentarily, but the others quickly adapted, circling their prey.
"They're too organized!" Daniel called out, striking at one of the creatures. His blade grazed its side, drawing a trail of glowing ichor, but the Striker retaliated, its tail whipping toward him.
Mira intercepted, her blade catching the tail mid-swing. "Focus on splitting them up! They're stronger together!"
The Strikers shifted their formation, surrounding Daniel and Mira. Their movements were precise, their glowing stripes creating a disorienting pattern in the water.
Daniel's system pinged:

Without hesitation, Daniel activated the ability. The water around him churned violently, breaking the Strikers' formation. Mira seized the opportunity, diving toward the largest Striker with deadly precision. Her blade pierced its flank, and the creature let out a guttural screech before going limp.

The remaining Strikers regrouped, their aggression intensifying. Daniel pushed himself to keep up, his system highlighting weak points as he fought. He struck another Striker with Piercing Surge, the attack driving deep into its side. It writhed before vanishing into the dark.
Mira parried another attack, her movements fluid and practiced. "We're wearing them down," she said through gritted teeth.
Just as victory seemed near, the water trembled. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the Abyss, freezing both combatants and predators alike.
"What now?" Daniel muttered, his body tensing.
From the shadows emerged a monstrous figure—a massive, serpent-like creature with jagged scales and glowing red eyes. Its sheer size dwarfed the remaining Strikers, who scattered at its presence.

Mira's face paled. "We can't fight that. Not here."
The Leviathan's gaze locked onto them, its mouth opening to reveal rows of razor-sharp teeth. Daniel's system flashed multiple warnings, urging immediate retreat.
"Run!" Mira shouted, grabbing Daniel's fin and propelling them backward.
The Leviathan lunged, its jaws snapping just shy of them. Daniel activated Hydro Dash, pushing his speed to the limit. Mira followed closely, her bioluminescent bursts disorienting the pursuing behemoth.
The chase was relentless, the Leviathan's roars shaking the water around them. Daniel's system fed him constant updates on its distance and trajectory, but it wasn't enough. The creature was gaining.
"We need a plan!" Daniel shouted.
Mira scanned the environment, her eyes locking onto a narrow crevice in the rocky seabed. "There!" she pointed. "If we can fit through, it might lose us!"
They dove toward the crevice, the gap barely wide enough for their forms. Mira slipped through first, her blade scraping against the edges. Daniel followed, the Leviathan's jaws snapping inches from his tail as he squeezed through.
The creature roared in frustration, its massive body too large to follow. It thrashed against the rocks, causing the crevice to tremble, but after a moment, it withdrew, its growls fading into the distance.
Breathing heavily, Daniel and Mira emerged into a hidden cavern bathed in faint, ethereal light. Strange plants glowed along the walls, their bioluminescence casting dancing shadows.
"That was too close," Daniel said, his voice shaky.
Mira nodded, her expression grim. "The Abyss doesn't let you rest. We'll have to be even more careful moving forward."
As they caught their breath, Daniel's system chimed softly:

[Fragment Energy Detected Nearby.]
Daniel frowned. "Another fragment?"
Mira's eyes narrowed. "We'll need to investigate. But first, let's make sure nothing else is lurking here."
Together, they moved cautiously into the glowing cavern, the shadows around them whispering of the dangers yet to come.
