"I'm going back this afternoon. Chloe, are you going with me?"
Daniel pushed open the door with a gloomy face, even a little intimidating.
Chloe was slightly shocked. Before she answered, her phone rang.
It was from Mrs. Laura.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Chloe asked cautiously.
"Cut the crap and come back now. Your brother is dying!" Then without waiting for Chloe, Mrs. Laura hung up the phone instantly.
Dying? Chloe nearly fell to the ground. What happened?
Her mind was blank for a moment. It happened too quickly. Did her mom just tell her Kevin was dying?
That's impossible! Nothing happened to him in her precious life!
"Let's go back now."
Seeing Chloe looking so helpless and upset, Daniel felt a sudden heartache as well.
On their way back, Laura's words played over and over again in Chloe's head.
She knew Kevin was sick but didn't know he was ill so badly. After all, Laura looked after him so carefully and she thought she wasn't needed at all.
No one needed her.
Now, such a blow stroke her hard. He was dying.
While she was overwhelmed by so many complicated feelings, she felt someone hold her hand and his hand was so... warm.
As she looked up, Daniel squeezed her hand slightly.
"Do you think Kevin will... die?"
Her voice sounded so vulnerable as if she could faint at any minute. Daniel felt his throat was so dry that he found it difficult to comfort her.
As far as Daniel knew, Kevin had been ill from time to time since he was born. But due to the care of Laura and Mr. Johnson over the years, nothing serious really happened to Kevin.
Until today.
"Don't scare yourself. Let's go back to hear the details from the doctor."
While Nancy leaned forward and whispered, "Chloe, don't worry, I've called the best leukemia doctor in our hospital to check on your brother. He will be fine."
"Leukemia?" Chloe blurted out, turning to Daniel in disbelief.
Daniel couldn't help frowning. He didn't know Kevin had leukemia either.
While Nancy covered her mouth, "You don't know?"
Chloe shook her head and didn't say anything.
Nancy pursed her lips, pretending to be regretting telling them the news. Then she spoke in a softer voice, "Sorry, that's all I know. Since I'm from a different department, I haven't got any useful details."
But at least Nancy was a doctor! So much better than Chloe. So she asked Nancy desperately, "Nancy, do you think Kevin can be cured?"
"Sorry, Chloe, I don't know. I heard his illness is quite serious, which might have something to do with ineffective treatment in the early years."
"Ineffective treatment? How come? Oh, gosh. Kevin has been away and I know little about him."
Seeing Chloe biting her lip hard out of guilt, the corner of Nancy's mouth curled up. But she hid it well. She even reached out her hand and patted Chloe on her head gently. "Chloe, calm down. He will be fine."
Soon they arrived at the hospital. Daniel didn't come with them since he was busy with other things.
"Chloe, go to visit Kevin and remember to stay calm. I will do whatever I can to help you." Nancy had changed into her uniform.
Chloe nodded and rushed to the ICU instantly.
"What took you so long, you little brat? Come with me to give a blood transfusion." As Laura saw Chloe come in, she dragged Chloe by her arm in a hurry and headed toward the doctor.
Before Chloe realized what was going on, the nurse came to her for her blood.
"Miss, you are thin. You should gain some weight. Or I fear you might faint halfway." The nurse was trying to find her vein for blood drawing.
Chloe didn't dare to see the blood and immediately looked away.
"Your blood type is rare. Very rare." The nurse murmured subconsciously.
Chloe asked,"What is my blood type?"
She had never paid attention to this before.
"RH negative type. You should protect yourself well." The nurse replied kindly.
"So Kevin has the same blood type?" Chloe asked in a low voice.
"That's right," The nurse pressed a cotton swab on her wound, "This kind of blood is urgently needed in our hospital. Mr. Johnson had a massive hemorrhage during the operation. Luckily, we got support from other hospitals. But he's not stable now and we might need more. Your arrival is such a relief to us."
"How is he now... "Chloe didn't dare to hear the answer.
The nurse noticed her pale face and comforted, "Don't worry. Take a deep breath and relax. We will do our best to help him."
"Are you done yet? The doctor is still waiting for blood." At this moment, another doctor urged anxiously.
Hearing this, the nurse took the blood bag and ran to the operating room.
But Chloe was too worried to rest. So instead of following the nurse's instructions, she stood up and walked to check on Kevin.
Laura had been pacing back and forth uneasily.
While Chloe walked slowly towards her. She wanted to speed up but somehow she felt dizzy that she couldn't even walk straight.
As Laura saw her, her face darkened.
Chloe didn't see that. She supported herself against the wall and asked, "Mom, how is he doing now?"
Laura didn't speak for a while. She sneered before she parted her lips, "Do you really care? I thought you wouldn't come until he was sent to the morgue."
Chloe's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked up at Laura, "Mom? How can you say that!"
"You tell me! You deliberately came so late! If it weren't for the blood from other hospitals, your brother might have died! In that case, you will have all the inheritance yourself!"
No! That was not true! She never thought about it!
Chloe shook her head crazily, but she was choked by tears that she couldn't say anything to defend herself.
