Bab 23: Chapter 22 - Transfiguration Today

The class was quite boring for Alder. The first lesson was about changing match to a needle. Although he had created a failed product of something between both of them, he casted Reparifarge to change it back. With repetition and the explanation he got from McGonagall, it didn't take him long to get the skill to Level 1.

"A perfect needle. Five points to Hufflepuff." said McGonagall with an approving smile.

Alder was quite content with the result. Having finished his task early, he had finally time think some things through.

Now that he had 6 Free Talent Points and 3 Free Stat Points, Alder had many options before him. Since he decided to save the boy and there was a possibility of werewolf attack, he couldn't find any reason to hoard Points anymore. Well, there was one, most of the practical talents had the way of gaining points through completing its examination. But Alder was sceptical if he could really max a talent just by attending school or reading books. It made the whole Free Talent Points system questionable to him. There was a high chance their existence was all about him having a specialty.

'Should I directly spend all the points on Curses? But I don't want to dabble with dark arts too much, they change the person from inside. Even though it's easy to solve problems with curses, a complete mind is more important to me in the long run. Charms? There are too many books about it, so that could be potentially the most wasteful usage of points. Elemental magic? Too early, I have yet to find a proper spell about it. Legilimency? Not sure if I can use in battle, great skill though... Transfiguration? Even if it has boundaries, it has quite freedom in it depending on the caster. Also it doesn't have many textbooks for it, so I highly doubt I can max it just by attending the school and reading about it.'

Having made his mind, Alder waited no more. Since being jack of all trades and master of none would not help him, even now or later, he dumped all his Talent Points to Transfiguration.

-Transfiguration: 4 (Talent Points needed for the next level: 3) –

-Free Talent Points: 2-

He glanced at the Avifors skill but decided not to spend his Experience on it. Unlike talent levels, he had the means to level it up by practice. So saving those points for things he can't practice would be better.

'I should find a useful spell to practice. Raising match to needle to second level is pointless.'

Thus Alder waited the class to be over patiently. But before he could rush to the library, he was stopped by Professor McGonagall.

"Mr Gray, please stay behind." a soft voice was heard behind his back. He turned and went to the professor.

"Yes, Professor?"

"I heard you successfully casted Avifors." said McGonagall with bright eyes.

Alder nodded and said "Indeed, Professor. It was in the textbook for the class.".

"While you are not wrong, that textbook you're talking about is for your first and second year. It's no small feat to cast a second year spell before attending your first Transfiguration class. Can you show me the spell?" said McGonagall with expectation.

Alder nodded and muttered "Avifors" with a wave of his wand. The quill in his hand changed into a sparrow and started flying around the room.

"Marvellous. A perfect cast." she watched the bird flying till it's duration ended and started falling. "Its duration seems rather short. But you're in your growth stage now, it should be much better next year when your magical powers grow further." McGonagall nodded in thought.

"You're free to ask me anything troubles you, Mr Gray. It's quite rare to find such a talent in Transfiguration. Maybe one day we can see an article of yours in Transfiguration Today." said McGonagall with a serious look.

Alder was shocked with the revelation. The same day he had decided to choose his first specialty, he found a great way to use it. Not only would he earn his points back, it also opened the way for the future.

Although it was hard to hold his joy, it was not the place for it. So Alder also nodded seriously and gave his thanks to the professor.

Alder almost ran to the library in excitement. He returned the book 'Unfogging the Future' back and piled all sorts of Transfiguration books on his desk.

With his newly increased talent he found some things easier to understand unlike before. He was itching to read them in detail but finding a good spell had to come first. He searched all the subtypes of the Transfiguration and found the most useful spell for himself in Conjuration.

[Incarcerous Spell is a spell that conjures thick ropes or thin cords out of 'thin air' that bounds the target of the caster…]

'This is it. Not as dangerous as other stuff, but can do wonders in the right hands.'

While he was checking out all about Transfiguration, he found why McGonagall said the things she told about Animagi.

Although it was probably dependant of the witch or wizard's talent, the process was rather complicated and radical. One had to hold a leaf from Mandrake in the mouth for a whole month first. Even this step was difficult because it could hinder speaking and eating. Also failing this process for even a second would require you to start over again. Even if you have done all the previous steps and finally prepared the Animagus potion, you had to wait for a lightning storm which was actually the easiest step considering the weather around Hogwarts. But even if you have done everything perfect, you could still fail the process if you were to be unlucky. And the failure this time would not only mean starting over, it could make you stuck in a form neither a human nor an animal. Worst of all, he couldn't find any remedies if such a thing were to happen.

Animagi also had its own benefits other than disguise. The most obvious for Alder was being able to speak with other animals in the Animagus form. But despite everything, he couldn't decide if it was worth trying. He had a new respect born from his heart to the Marauders.
