Jerome
THE BELL above the bakery door rang as I walked into the warm building. It was a pleasant respite from the cold. This would be the first full winter I’d spend in Pelican Bay, but I didn’t imagine it would be much colder than it got in New York. Hopefully.
Even with the chill, nothing could ruin my day.
At least until I lifted my head and saw who stood behind the counter. Katy. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, making her resemble the woman next to her. Both of them wore pink aprons with frill sewn around the edges.
The town was small, but why did it feel like I ran into Katy everywhere I visited? "Did Pierce fire you already?"
Katy rolled her eyes and stuck her hand on her hip. "I’m helping a friend."
I barely believed Katy actually had friends. Plural, as in more than one. I needed to get over my resentment for her, but the way she treated Pierce for years rubbed me the wrong way. A man didn’t change his emotions overnight.
