Chapter 35: Armament Haki
On the Grand Line, aboard the ship of the Red-Haired Pirates…
"Captain, that kid from Windmill Town seems to be making waves," remarked Benn Beckman, the crew's vice-captain, as he laid a stack of documents in front of a man with red hair and three scars over his left eye.
This man, with his loose white shirt, floral-patterned trousers, black cape, and sword by his side, was none other than Shanks, one of the Four Emperors.
A smile spread across Shanks' face as he studied the image of a now-grown young man featured in the newspaper, his mind drifting back to a simpler time years ago.
It was in Windmill Town where Shanks had met two intriguing brothers, Chiba and Luffy. Chiba, calm and composed, and Luffy, boundless with energy and dreams of becoming the Pirate King. Luffy's unbreakable spirit and tenacity had reminded Shanks of his former captain, Gol D. Roger, so much so that he'd entrusted him with Roger's straw hat—a symbol of his own dreams.
At the time, Chiba had given Luffy a fierce punch, warning Shanks not to encourage Luffy's reckless desire to become a pirate. He'd made it clear that if Shanks tried to lead Luffy astray, he'd have to answer to Chiba.
Now, Shanks looked at the newspaper and laughed. "In the new era, Marine's monster, the new candidate Admiral, Monkey D. Chiba… That kid's done well for himself!" His smile deepened. "He reminds me of someone."
"Who?" Beckman asked, curious.
"His grandfather, Garp," Shanks replied, grinning.
Beckman raised an eyebrow. "Chiba's just a researcher. His alternate Admiral position was given to him because of his discoveries. He's not exactly known for his combat strength."
Shanks stood, his cape billowing in the sea breeze as he gazed out over the horizon, his red hair dancing with the wind. "From this photo—his look and presence—I can tell his strength is far from ordinary. I'm looking forward to meeting him."

Meanwhile, Chiba was oblivious to the waves his reputation was stirring throughout the pirate world. He remained focused, deep in cultivation of the God-Elephant Suppressing Prison Strength.
The tiny baby elephants within him, powered by the steady consumption of Ultimate Foundation Building Pills, had now entered their growth stage. Each day, his demand for the potent pills increased, as did his physical power, which grew at a remarkable pace.
Chiba was certain that, once his motes reached full maturity, his physical strength would rival that of an Admiral. Achieving this much progress in only a year, despite spending most of his time on research, was an accomplishment few others in the world could match.
Alongside this, Chiba had also dedicated time to honing his Armament Haki. In the One Piece world, Haki was the ultimate power. With his intensely trained physique and an accelerated method of cultivating Armament Haki, Chiba had already reached a terrifyingly high level of proficiency.
Seven days later, just as dawn broke over Marineford…
The golden rays glistened across the waves as Marine soldiers began their morning drills around the island. Inside his research room, Chiba opened his eyes, a glint of satisfaction in his gaze.
"The 840 million particles have finally entered the growth phase of the giant elephant."
Clenching his fist, he felt the boundless strength within him. Raising his palm, he enveloped it in a dense layer of Armament Haki, feeling the surge of power as it flowed through him.
Chiba closed his fist, causing the Haki to extend beyond his hand. Black ribbons of energy stretched from between his fingers, floating in the air like flowing water plants, soft yet formidable.
This was the external release of Armament Haki—an ability only those with exceptional control could achieve. It marked Chiba as one of the elite Haki users.
With a thought, he directed the black Haki ribbon toward a nearby ultra-hard board. The ribbon pierced it effortlessly, slicing through more than a dozen layers as if they were made of paper.
Nodding with satisfaction, Chiba retracted his Haki. "With my current physical power and Armament Haki mastery, I'm worthy of the alternate Admiral title."
"But this alone isn't enough."
"In the pirate world, Haki reigns supreme. My Armament Haki is formidable, but now I need to master both Observation Haki and Conqueror's Haki."
"Conqueror's Haki is rare, so I'll focus on Observation Haki first."
When his research staff arrived that morning, Chiba instructed them to gather every piece of information available on Observation Haki and deliver it to him.
A month passed swiftly as he delved into this new pursuit, further advancing his mastery of Haki and pushing his abilities to new heights.
