Bab 144: Ashes of the past, part 2

"The Inverted Tower," Cael read aloud. "A tower! Was that a wizard's dwelling? And inverted… Does that mean that it goes underground instead of up, you think, Gin?"

"If that's an old tower, it would explain the protection spells," she replied.

Cael read a string of glyphs that ran along the door's edge and frowned. <Man and beast won't cross thine threshold, magic will not break thine bonds…>

"Maybe," he said. "An entire abandoned tower… I wonder what happened to the last owner. Did he die without an heir?"

"My question, Cael, is why would someone build their tower on an uninhabited island and underground, where it won't be seen from away?"

"Well, that's obvious. He was hiding!" Cael leveled the stone door with a stare. "Hiding himself and his things, I'm sure."

Ginevra's gray eyes widened, only to narrow as a speculative glint appeared in them. The same one which, Cael felt, was showing in his own eyes.
