Bab 81: Wishful thinking

There was a wide assortment of flavors to awaken his taste buds.

Two fat red herring with steamed vegetables, a white sauce was drizzled over the fish and he could not get enough of the tart taste that had him licking his fingers. 

Steaming white rice with a dab of butter melting on top. 

Leftover johnny cakes, chicken breasts stuffed with callaloo and salted cod fish and baked beans from breakfast that morning.

Betsy offered to put him up for the night but Maxixe didn't want to take advantage of her kindness and hospitality.

He thanked her profusely but she wouldn't allow him to leave without accepting some food. 

Betsy handed him a sack filled with three fresh out of the oven piping hot loaves of bread. 

Some jack sprats and a potato salad filled with vegetables, quail eggs and bacon. 

She also gave him a wooden canister with water for him to take on his journey.
