Kuzsayev came out with Nicholas.
The one with the broken leg was Nicholas, and it was skillfully done; his left thigh bone and right tibia were cleanly broken.
Nicholas was in so much pain that he wanted to roll around but dared not move, his face turning blue. A strong young man, his eyes brimming with tears, yet he refused to cry out, eliciting heartfelt sympathy from anyone who saw him.
Kuzsayev was nearly in tears himself, his face a mask of panic and fear as he stood beside the stretcher, looking at Nicholas, as if he truly wished he could take the fall for him.
In theory, and in practice, Kuzsayev could have taken Nicholas's place, but he hadn't, and that was the real root of his anguish.
