Bab 4: Leap of Faith

Over the course of just two intense days, I immersed myself in the rigorous training regimen that Spider-Noir had set up for me. Acutely aware of the urgency of our situation, I pushed my body and mind to their absolute limits, driven by the knowledge that the fate of not just this world but potentially many others depended on our success.

We began with a relentless focus on the fundamentals: combat, wall-crawling, and honing my heightened senses and reflexes. Noir drilled me mercilessly, refusing to let me rest until each movement and technique had been ingrained into muscle memory.

"Your spider-sense is your greatest asset, Webhead," he would growl as I narrowly dodged a series of Noir's moves. "But it's up to you to use it to your advantage. Don't just react – anticipate, strategize, and strike with purpose."

I took his words to heart, channelling every ounce of my concentration into the task at hand. Hour after hour, I pushed myself to the brink, my body aching with exertion but my determination unwavering.

One evening, as we took a break from the training, Aunt May approached me with a small package in her hands.

She said softly, "I made something for you; you might need this. I hope you like it. It is a little unique, but it will suit you."

I took the package, my fingers trembling slightly as I unwrapped it. Inside was a classic, but well-cared-for, Spider-Man suit, or, I would say, a Spider-Girl suit—it was similar to the hand-made suit of Homecoming Spider-Man but a better and more well-defined suit, and it had a black and blue theme.

"Aunt May, I..." I stammered, struggling to find the words to express my gratitude and the weight of the responsibility I now felt.

"It is just a little step from my side to help a future superhero. Don't worry about that."

I stepped forward, hugged Aunt May, and thanked her for the suit. As I pulled back, Penni Parker bounded over, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Ooh, let me see the suit!" she exclaimed, already reaching for the fabric. "I've got just the thing to make it even more awesome!"

Before I could protest, Penni had whisked the suit away, disappearing into the lair's workshop. Within minutes, she reappeared, proudly holding up the newly modified outfit.

"Ta-da!" she announced, gesturing dramatically. "I integrated some of my high-tech webbing and gadgets into the design. You're gonna love it!"

I inspected the suit, my eyes widening as I noticed the subtle enhancements—reinforced webbing, compact web shooters, and even what appeared to be a miniature scanner embedded in the mask.

"Penni, this is incredible," I breathed, running my fingers over the sleek material. "I don't know what to say."

I later asked her about the web slingers and other tech in my suit.

She explained to me about her creating a synergy in my suit that enhanced my application of venom blast and combat capabilities. Good thing, I don't know why, but I remember everything she said, but I have a problem that I don't know about some terms she used.

"Gotta stay one step ahead of the bad guys, right?" She would say this with a wink as she fine-tuned the intricate web-based systems.

The next day, I was again ready for training. But it wasn't just the physical training that consumed our frantic pace. Noir also drilled me relentlessly on strategy, tactics, and the art of deception.

Noir's voice was a constant echo in my training sessions, his words slicing through the air with the same precision he expected of my maneuvers. "In this line of work, Webhead, you can't always rely on brute force," he would caution, his gaze sharp as an owl's as he scrutinized the video playback of my latest failed scenario.

With him standing there, arms crossed, he imparted tactical wisdom that could turn the tide of any confrontation. "You need to think three steps ahead, anticipate your opponent's moves, and use their weaknesses against them," he'd continue, his tone insistent yet imbued with a confidence that suggested he had gone through a thousand such situations—and emerged victorious from each.

I listened intently, taking meticulous notes and analysing each simulation with a critical eye. Noir's teachings began to take root, and I found myself developing a keen strategic mind to complement my growing physical prowess.

Throughout the intense training, Aunt May watched over us, her eyes shining with a mixture of pride and melancholy. I could see the weight of her grief slowly lifting as she witnessed my progress, and it only fueled my determination to become the best Spider-Man I could be.

On the final evening of our training, Noir gathered us all together, his expression grave.

"Alright, Webheads, listen up. We've got one shot at this, and it's going to be tight. The quantum fluctuations are getting worse, and we need to time this just right."

He turned to me, and his eyes narrowed with intensity. "Webhead, you've come a long way in a short time, but I need you to be ready for anything. This isn't going to be easy, but I know you've got what it takes."

I nodded, my heart pounding with a mixture of fear and determination. "I'm ready, Noir. Whatever it takes, I'll do it."

Everyone stood atop a building in the middle of the city, the city skyline stretching out before us. I sat on the edge, my feet dangling over the side, and turned to the others with a hint of trepidation.

"Is it really necessary to jump?" I asked, my gaze sweeping across the towering buildings. "I mean, we've been training hard, but this seems so extreme that I got a height of fear."

""It's fear of height."" Everyone corrected.

Spider-Noir stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the horizon. "Webhead, you've come a long way in a short time, but this is the moment of truth. We all started our journeys from a place like this—taking that first leap of faith."

Penni Parker chimed in, her voice brimming with excitement. "Think of it like a rite of passage! Every Spider-Person has to take that first web swing, and now it's your turn!"

Spider-Ham bounced up beside me, a mischievous grin on his face. "Aw, c'mon, kid! Where's your sense of adventure? This is gonna be a blast – just trust your instincts and let 'em rip!"

I looked around at the assembled group, each of them wearing an expression of unwavering confidence.

"They're right, you know," Noir said softly, placing a hand on my head. "Every spider has experienced it; the first leap was the hardest, but once you took it, the rest would come naturally."

I took a deep breath, steadying my nerves. They were right—this was the moment I had been training for, the final test before we embarked on our mission to set things right. Squaring my shoulders, I turned to face the dizzying drop before me.

I still remember the phrase of Uncle Ben: 'With great power comes great responsibility.' In every Spider-verse comic, even in the movies of Spider-Man, they have to carry this weight of responsibilities.

Do I qualify to carry out those responsibilities? I am just a traverser who, unluckily, got involved with Oscorp and had to run from there and get bitten by a spider by mistake. It is the greatest turn of my life. Am I doing this because of Noir's expectations? I even don't know what I am gonna do. All sorts of thoughts are passing through my mind.

But still, it is a leap of faith that will decide everything about my fate. I steadied myself with resolve to find out about myself, what I was doing, and what my responsibilities were.

"Okay," I said, my voice steadier than I expected. "Let's do this."

Noir nodded approvingly, stepping back to give me some space. "Remember, Webhead, trust your senses. They'll guide you through this, just like they have in training."

I let my eyelids close softly, yielding to the delicate yet distinct hum of my spider-sense that tingled with a warning down my neck. Inhaling deeply, I filled my lungs with the crisp nocturnal breeze before my eyes flew open, brimming with resolve. With a burst of audacity, I leapt off the edge, my body flipping midair as I dove headfirst.

The initial rush of raw, exhilarating adrenaline nearly overwhelmed my senses, but as soon as I extended my arm and a web line launched out, serenity settled over the turmoil. It seemed as though time slowed, granting a momentary pause as I manoeuvred through the urban labyrinth with natural elegance. My actions were a concert of instinct and exactness, each web shooter responding flawlessly to the slightest of my commands, slinging me from one skyscraper to the next in graceful swings.

The others followed close behind, the noise and sounds echoing through the city streets. I could feel the exhilaration building within me—a sense of pure freedom and power that I had never experienced before.

This was it—the moment I had been waiting for. With each passing second, my confidence grew, and I found myself navigating the urban landscape with ever-increasing skill and grace.

I slowly integrated my movement with the moves from the game of PS4 Spider-Man, which gave me more fluidity, speed, and greater control.

"Wooooo-Hoooooooooo" Gliding effortlessly between the constrictive walls of a perilous alley, I opted for a daring manoeuvre, placing my feet against the side of a towering skyscraper to ascend its surface with rapid strides rather than resorting to a cautious crawl, intuiting that speed was of the essence.

Upon conquering the summit, I launched into a daring backflip, my body inverted as I deftly crossed my arms, continuing to spin with precision. The ground rushed up to meet me, but with a practiced ease, I veered away, my web line securing my path and propelling me forward once more. My trajectory completed a full circle, bringing me back to where my extraordinary journey had begun.

"That was good for web-slinging for the first time, but you wasted too much energy on those unnecessary movements like those air tricks and others. I will not deny that some have the effect of momentarily boosting speed and maneuvering." Noir, as ever, praised me and even guided me at the same time.
