Bab 46: This Is War!
"Just… worried?"
Observing Lorna's impassive expression, Max didn't dwell on it. The SSS surged forward, and Lorna's concern seemed justified.
The atmosphere grew tense as they drove, a heavy silence hanging in the air.
After a two-hour drive, a line of black convoys emerged in the distance.
"These are Sentry Secret Service vehicles; they might not have arrived yet. We need to hasten!" John asserted with seriousness.
"No, they're here."
Max gazed ahead, spotting an eruption of fire not far away, shooting skyward.
"Oh my God, what are they doing?"
"Are they out of their minds?"
John and Lorna's expressions shifted instantly. This was no longer a mere capture; it resembled a massacre, a full-blown war!
"They are reinforcements, and allowing them to reach us will only escalate the danger," John warned solemnly. "You need to stop them."
"I'll handle it," Lorna replied flatly.
"John, overtake them and find a spot to pull over. I'll assist Lorna in opening the door."
"Got it!"
John accelerated, zooming past the convoy and coming to a halt ahead. Lorna exited the vehicle, and Max gestured to open the door.
"Be cautious."
Lorna materialized on the highway.
Facing the oncoming convoy, Lorna's hands radiated a green glow. Suddenly, the lead car somersaulted onto the road, landing sideways with a resounding crash, bringing the following vehicle to an abrupt stop.
In a distinct realm, John accelerated toward their destination.
The flames ascended.
What once appeared as a private school now lay in ruins, engulfed in the chaos of war, with gunfire and gunpowder saturating the air.
Around the school, SSS agents and Sentinels encircled mutants. Panic-stricken mutants attempted to flee, only to be swiftly shot down. The bullets they faced were specifically designed—brake bullets inflicting agonizing pain and immobilizing their abilities upon impact!
Gunshots echoed alongside cries. The SSS displayed no hesitation, shooting down adults and children alike, regardless of gender. In this tumultuous scene, Sentinels haunted mutants like a relentless nightmare; a momentary lapse could result in their capture.
In the distance, a little girl sat frozen on the ground, seemingly paralyzed by fear. An agent aimed a shot her way, the bullet whizzing past in an instant!
In the face of imminent danger, the atmosphere in front of the little girl seemed to freeze, and suddenly, an ice wall materialized in the blink of an eye.
Boom!
The bullet collided with the ice wall, sending a resounding echo through the air. A man swiftly emerged beside the little girl, urging her to flee with a sense of urgency, "Run!"
The little girl snapped out of her daze, quickly scrambled to her feet, and sprinted away from the perilous scene.
"Iceman?"
Meanwhile, in a different dimension, John parked the car and witnessed the dramatic events. Max, sitting in the vehicle, observed the unfolding spectacle and identified the man as Iceman Bobby from the X-Men.
"This is intriguing." Max grinned and stepped out of the car. Surveying the surroundings, he swiftly located a suitable spot amidst the ruins of a nearby building, likely a former classroom with only a fragment of the wall remaining.
Opening a door in the remaining wall, Max made a door appear and then disappeared.
Max explained to John, "I won't open two doors simultaneously. You rescue the people brought here, and I'll return to open the door."
"Sure, be careful!" John shouted, heading off in search of those in need.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Gunshots resonated, chaos ensued, and the battlefield became a tumultuous scene with numerous Sentinel agents. Despite the pandemonium, Max felt a familiar sense of comfort amid the disorder.
"Unfortunately, I didn't bring a sniper rifle," Max lamented, clutching a pistol in his left hand. In contrast, the triangular spines of his right hand extended.
Venturing into the fray, Max remained utterly focused. Quickly assessing the battlefield, he sprinted toward a particular direction with the agility of a cheetah, covering the ground in the blink of an eye.
"Whoo!"
A stray bullet whizzed past from an unexpected direction. Max, seemingly anticipating the danger, gracefully bent over, allowing the bullet to soar harmlessly above his head.
Despite the close call, Max pressed on without missing a beat. With swift strides, he approached a Sentinel targeting a mutant. With a deft motion, he flung the sai's, directing it skillfully at the mechanized foe.
Zi Zi Zi.
Illuminated by sparks, the Sentinel crumpled to the ground, incapacitated.
Max turned his attention to the escaped mutant, offering a confident smile. With a swift motion, he extended his left arm and pulled the trigger.
The agent on the left, aiming in their direction, fell to the ground, neutralized by Max's precise shot.
