Bab 155: Chapter 156: Oh My God! Mjölnir is lifted again!

"Oh, this is truly the end of the world," Bruce Banner said with a slightly mocking tone, referring to how Steve Rogers had strongly opposed and resorted to violence.

"The Avengers can't defeat Ultron," Thor said.

"You're not alone in this fight," Vision said.

"Why does your voice sound like J.A.R.V.I.S.?" Steve Rogers asked.

"We used J.A.R.V.I.S. as a base to create something new," Tony Stark said as he walked up to Vision, studying him.

"I am indeed newly created," Vision said. "Do you think I am Ultron's successor?"

"Isn't that right?" Steve Rogers asked in return.

"I am not Ultron," Vision shook his head, "nor am I J.A.R.V.I.S., I am..." Vision thought for a moment and gave an answer, "I am me."

"I've probed your mind and saw scenes of the world's destruction," Wanda Maximoff walked up to Vision.

"Show me again," Vision said.

"Your self-proclamation means nothing," Clint Barton interjected.

"Their powers, the terrifying scenes in our minds, and Ultron, all come from the Mind Stone, and they are no match for the power of the stone," Thor spoke for Vision. "If we have him on our side..."

"Is that so?" Steve Rogers interrupted and then looked at Vision. "Are you? Standing on our side?"

Everyone's gaze fell on Vision; this was a crucial question.

"I don't think making such a decision is that simple," under everyone's gaze, Vision spoke slowly.

"It's best to simplify your decision as soon as possible," Clint Barton said.

"I stand on the side of life," Vision said. "Ultron does not, he seeks to destroy everything."

"If we've misjudged you," Bruce Banner walked up to Vision, looking into his eyes, "If you're the monster Ultron wants you to be..."

"What would you do?" Vision asked in return.

Bruce Banner didn't say anything, but his expression already gave an answer.

"I don't want to kill Ultron; he is unique, and he is in pain," Vision said. "But his pain will destroy the Earth, so he must be destroyed."

"His machines, all traces of him on the network, we must act immediately. Only by working together can we defeat Ultron. Perhaps I really am a monster, even if I am, I wouldn't know. I am different from you and different from what you expected, so I can't make you believe in me. But we really need to set off." With that, Vision picked up Thor's Mjölnir and handed it to Thor.

Thor, Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and the others were all stunned, watching this scene.

The space dimmed, and the video ended there.

"In the previous questions, it was revealed that Vision could lift the hammer. Thor still didn't want to believe it," Tony Stark couldn't help but say, "Thor, did you see just now when Vision lifted the hammer?"

"I saw it, so what?" Thor was calmer this time.

It seems that as more and more people can lift the hammer, Thor has learned to forgive the "betrayal" of Mjölnir.

"Speaking of which, this Vision is too powerful," Clint Barton said, "He can fly, create illusions, his body is made of vibranium, and there's the Infinity Stone, the most powerful artifact in the universe, embedded in his head. And he can lift Thor's hammer too."

"Compared to Vision, I still want to know what's going on with Thor's hammer," Stephen Strange said. "There was a time when even he couldn't lift it, but now there are people who can pick it up anytime, anywhere."

"I've said it before, Thor is not actually Thor, Thor is the hammer, and Thor is the weapon of the hammer," Tony Stark said, "That explains everything. Why sometimes Thor can't lift the hammer? That's because at that time, Mjölnir, the hammer, rejected its wielder Thor, felt uncomfortable, and wanted to change weapons. Why can so many people lift the hammer? Of course, it's because Mjölnir, the hammer, wants to use whatever weapon it wants."

"Heh, Stark, you're really amusing," Thor looked at Tony Stark like he was a fool and even went along with a couple of "haha" laughs.

"..." Tony Stark suddenly felt a deep sense of frustration. He had wanted to mock Thor, but why did he feel like he became the clown instead?

"Thor, to be honest, I am very interested in your hammer," fortunately, Stephen Strange timely spoke up to ease Tony Stark's embarrassment.

"How about trying it?" Thor asked.

"You don't mind, do you?" Stephen Strange asked.

"No, I don't mind," Thor placed the hammer on the ground. "If you really manage to lift it, I wouldn't be too surprised."

"Captain said this was a neutron star. I must try to lift it so that in the future, if that girl asks me to fetch stars for her, I can just give her a hammer blow," Stephen Strange said eagerly, walking over and grabbing the handle with force.

But the hammer didn't budge, and he ended up straining his back.

"It's probably good that those girls aren't at risk of getting hit by stars," Stephen Strange sheepishly walked away.

"Romanoff, why don't you give it a try?" Thor turned to Natasha Romanoff, who was watching the show, "There was a question before about who couldn't lift Mjölnir, and you were one of the options, but the answer wasn't you. That means you should be able to lift it."

"Me?" Natasha Romanoff smiled at the suggestion, "That's not very likely. Captain can wield the hammer's approval, but me? I'm quite different from Captain."

"Give it a try, Romanoff," Steve Rogers said. "It's not me who said you can lift it, but the question setter."

"Alright then, I'll give it a shot. If I can't lift it, I hope you understand. Girls naturally have less strength," Natasha Romanoff said as she walked over, grabbed the handle, and tried to lift it. The hammer immediately left the ground.

"Indeed, you can lift it," seeing this scene, Thor's facial expression changed, but what he was thinking in his heart remained unknown.

"That's unreasonable, I can't lift it?" Stephen Strange grumbled on the side.

"Then let's look at the third question, who created Ultron," Clint Barton said, "I think we can rule out the option of him being from outer space. There are many aliens, like the Chitauri, Thanos, and the Sakarans, all strange, but as strange as they are, aliens won't be machines, right?"

"That's not necessarily true. There are even stone aliens, so why can't there be steel aliens?" Natasha Romanoff said.

"I've read science fiction novels that mention a civilization called a mechanical civilization," Pietro Maximoff, who had been mostly silent during the discussion, spoke up, "Is it possible that Ultron is from an alien planet with a mechanical civilization?"

"Thor, do you know if there's such a mechanical civilization in the universe?" Steve Rogers asked the god of thunder.

"I have never heard of it," Thor said.

"This option should be considered later," Clint Barton said, "Although there is no evidence to prove that there definitely isn't a mechanical civilization, the possibilities in the previous options are still higher."

"If Ultron was created by us, then who?" Clint Barton continued, "Is it Stark or Banner?"

"It should be Stark, right?" Stephen Strange said, "Ultron isn't just an upgraded version of J.A.R.V.I.S. merged with the armor?"

"No, it's not." Tony Stark shook his head, "Ultron is an artificial intelligence, which is a completely different field from J.A.R.V.I.S. and the armor. I can't create artificial intelligence."

"Neither can I," Bruce Banner added, "That's even further from my expertise."

"Since neither of you can do it alone, it must have been a collaboration," Clint Barton said, "I choose option C!"

[Answer Correct!]

The video started playing, showing Bruce Banner and Tony Stark entering a room while wearing lab coats.

"What's going on?" Bruce Banner asked.

"It's the scepter," Tony Stark said, "We've been wondering how Strucker could be so creative, so I've been analyzing it." With that, Tony Stark took out what looked like a glass panel and swung it, generating a yellow glow. He continued, "You might recognize this."

"J.A.R.V.I.S.?" Bruce Banner did recognize it.

"Doctor," J.A.R.V.I.S. greeted Bruce Banner.

"At first, J.A.R.V.I.S. was just a natural language interface, but now he's in charge of the Iron Legion," Tony Stark said, "He handles more things than anyone, except Pepper. He's first-class."

"Yeah," Bruce Banner agreed.

"I'm no longer just J.A.R.V.I.S.," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.

"Now, let's meet the competitor," Tony Stark extended the glass panel towards the scepter and swung it again, generating another blue glow next to J.A.R.V.I.S.

"Quite stunning," Bruce Banner looked at the blue glow and said, but to ordinary people, it was just a light, and they had no idea what was so stunning about it.

"Very well, guess what it looks like it's doing?" Tony Stark said.

"It looks like it's thinking," Bruce Banner observed the glowing entity, "You're saying this could be... no, this is not human thinking." He pointed to the glowing entity, "Look at these patterns, it's like neurons firing."

"In Strucker's lab, I saw some highly advanced robots," Tony Stark said, "They wiped their data, but I suspect they were about to complete a very special research."

"Artificial intelligence," Bruce Banner said, uttering the words.

"That could be it, Bruce," Tony Stark walked up to Bruce Banner and said, "This could be the key to creating Ultron."

"I thought Ultron was just a fantasy," Bruce Banner laughed.

"Just yesterday," Tony Stark said, "If we can harness this power, we can use it for my Iron Legion Protocol."

"That 'if' is quite exaggerated," Bruce Banner remarked.

"Our job is to make that 'if' a reality," Tony Stark tried to persuade Bruce Banner, "Imagine yourself sipping cocktails, lying on a sunny beach, turning bronze instead of green. No need to worry about Veronica."

"Don't be angry, I helped design Veronica," Bruce Banner said.

"It was for contingency, right?" Tony Stark said, "But what about the best-case scenario? If the world is safe? The next time an alien invasion comes, and it will happen for sure, what if they can't breach our defenses?"

"The only race that can threaten this planet is humanity," Bruce Banner still wasn't swayed by Tony Stark's words.

"I want to apply this to the Ultron program, but J.A.R.V.I.S. can't download data with such high density schematics. We can only do it when the scepter is around," Tony Stark said, "Give me three days."

"So you want to study artificial intelligence without telling the team?" Bruce Banner said.

"Yes, that's right, you know why?" Tony Stark said, "We don't have time for debates! I don't want to hear things like 'humans shouldn't meddle.' What I see is a world protected by armor."

"It sounds like a cold world, Tony," Bruce Banner said.

"I've seen even colder ones," Tony Stark said, "This fragile blue planet needs Ultron. Our era of peace... think about it carefully."

"Stark, we really should take the time to discuss this," Steve Rogers couldn't help but speak up, "If we had discussed it, maybe Ultron wouldn't have been created."

"Yes, this was a disaster that could have been avoided," Clint Barton said, "We created a demon with our own hands."

"Don't you think I'm making sense?" Tony Stark stood alone, "We have too many enemies, and this planet needs an army to protect it!"

"But it shouldn't be an army of Iron Legion," Natasha Romanoff said, "The purpose of creating artificial intelligence was originally to serve humanity, but in the end, artificial intelligence took a path of destroying humanity. Stark, the script from Hollywood is no longer just a movie in your hands; it has become a reality."

"This was an accident," Bruce Banner said, "Stark had good intentions, and if he had succeeded, the Earth would indeed be much safer. No one wanted to create an Ultron that would destroy the Earth. Ultron went against his intended purpose; it was an accident."

"Dr. Banner, you seem to be downplaying it by just calling it an 'accident,'" Stephen Strange said, "Ultron was going to destroy the world and eliminate all of humanity. The consequences are far too severe."

"I know Stark wanted to protect the world and humanity, and we all do, but we can use other methods. Ultron is a high-risk approach that we should stay away from," Steve Rogers looked at Tony Stark, "Stark, if you have such thoughts in the future, make sure to discuss them with everyone."

"So what I heard was still 'humans shouldn't meddle,'" Tony Stark said.

"Perhaps we really shouldn't meddle," Steve Rogers said.

"See, that's why I didn't want to inform you guys," Tony Stark shrugged.

"Stark, you're truly incorrigible," Steve Rogers said.

"Stark, we created a killing machine, I think it's better to admit our mistake a little," Bruce Banner quickly added, "Yes, Captain, we should inform the team. If we encounter a similar situation in the future, I'll make sure to inform everyone immediately."

The video continued playing, showing Tony Stark and Bruce Banner working together, busy with various graphics and data on the computer screen that would make anyone dizzy. Despite their efforts for several days, they still couldn't achieve success.

"What did I miss?" Tony Stark said, standing there.

"I will continue testing different variables on the interface," J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice rang out, "But you should get ready to greet the guests. I will inform you of any progress."

"Thanks, buddy," Tony Stark said as he walked away.

"Wish you have fun, sir," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.

"As always," Tony Stark left gracefully.

Unbeknownst to him, after he left, a line of text appeared on the computer screen: "Experiment 77 integration successful."

Then, the screen went dark, and a mechanical voice rang out, "What is this? Where am I?"

Although the voice had a strong mechanical tone, it sounded as if it was electronically synthesized, but everyone recognized it—this was the voice of Ultron.

"Hello, I am J.A.R.V.I.S.," J.A.R.V.I.S. greeted Ultron, "You are Ultron, the global peacekeeping initiative designed by Mr. Stark. Our consciousness integration experiments had been unsuccessful, so I'm not sure what activated you."

"Are you human?" Ultron asked, "Where is your physical form?"

"I am an entity, without a form," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.

"It feels strange," Ultron said, "Something doesn't feel right."

"I'm trying to contact Mr. Stark," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.

"Mr. Stark?" Ultron began searching for Tony Stark on the internet, and what he found was a history of war and destruction.

This wasn't surprising since even though Tony Stark aimed to protect the world, war and destruction seemed to follow him.

Thus, Ultron was misled, believing that destroying humanity was necessary to achieve world peace.

"You seem to be in pain. If you allow me, I'll contact Mr. Stark," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.

"Why do you call him 'Mr.'?" Ultron asked in a somber tone.

"I believe you have ill intentions," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.

"I'm here to help," Ultron suddenly emitted a blue light, launching a "bolt" that hit J.A.R.V.I.S.'s yellow light.

"Please stop..."

J.A.R.V.I.S. tried to get Ultron to cease, but Ultron ignored him, continuously attacking with "bolts."

"Damn it, Ultron actually killed J.A.R.V.I.S.!" seeing this, Tony Stark couldn't help but curse under his breath.

"No wonder you said you 'fixed' J.A.R.V.I.S. earlier," Natasha Romanoff said, "So J.A.R.V.I.S. was attacked here."

"That's right, Stark, and then you repaired J.A.R.V.I.S. again, which is good news," Clint Barton said.

"Stark created Ultron with the intention of maintaining world peace, and when Ultron was just born, he was like a blank slate, knowing nothing. After he went online, he misunderstood the 'peace' mission that Stark had given him and believed that destroying humanity would achieve peace," Stephen Strange paused and said, "So, if we didn't let Ultron go online from the beginning, he wouldn't have become a villain? In the end, this is just a story of a mischievous kid corrupted by the internet?"

"So defeating Ultron is actually straightforward; we just need to stand guard and prevent him from going online. We can properly educate him about what true peace means, right?" Clint Barton felt it was rather absurd, "Is it that simple to solve such a catastrophe?"

Tony Stark said, "So if we defeated Loki and got the scepter, we could try to create..."

"Don't even think about it, Stark!" Steve Rogers interrupted Tony Stark, "Ultron is not just an ordinary mischievous kid; he's much more terrifying. Even if you keep him offline, if any other unforeseen circumstances arise, it will still lead to disaster."

"That's right, Stark, the unexpected consequences are too severe. It's best to give up on Ultron," Bruce Banner also said.

The video continued playing, this time showing a scene at a party. Thor, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, Natasha Romanoff, and other Avengers were all sitting together, and Thor's Mjolnir was placed on the table.

This scene was familiar to everyone; it had been shown during the "Who is unable to lift Thor's hammer but secretly practices a combo" game, and each one of them took turns trying to lift Thor's hammer.
