“Yeah.” He smiled and spoke a few words in the language. “That translates to once upon a time. Kinda. But like I said, I don’t know about the cat.”

Well, we’d just have to see, then.

BECAUSE OF THE traffic, it took almost twenty-five minutes before I pulled up in front of Theo’s sprawling house.

I got out of the car, paused at the trunk to retrieve the box that contained the laptop, and walked around to the curb. The kid hadn’t gotten out. I opened the door and leaned in. “Problem?”

His eyes behind the thick lenses of his glasses were enormous and scared. “I know this place.”

“How?”

“Aunt Del lived here.”

“Who?” Could the kid mean Delilah Carson, the party girl who’d been killed early in 2002?

“Aunt Delilah.”

I knew she’d moved in, but it had been some years after I’d moved out.

“She and Ma were in the same foster home, but she was like a real sister to Ma. She helped us get out of town when Uncle Gunther dis-I mean died, and she sent us money.”
