Chapter 39: Discussion
"Why aren't you saying anything?" After Klein finished his last sentence, Alice had been staring at him silently, prompting Klein to ask.
"Are you insulting me?" Alice asked seriously.
"Why do you say that?" Klein carefully recalled his words to see if there was anything wrong.
"It seemed like you were calling me a clown..." Alice realized she had misunderstood Klein's meaning and explained, "Alright, I was projecting my own thoughts. That's something I would say."
"I was really just thinking about the rules of acting!" Klein emphasized earnestly.
"Hmm... so are you going to start acting?" Alice responded perfunctorily, changing the topic.
"I... wait," Klein suddenly remembered something and looked at Alice, "How can you see me now?"
Alice fell silent. She wasn't deliberately ignoring the question; the answer was obvious: "If that unknown entity could wake me up as Alice, bring me back to life... then solving this issue when I was resurrected isn't that strange, right?"
"Would a great being really care about such trivial matters?" Klein found it hard to understand.
"Maybe it wasn't a great being? After all, even my name was given by someone else... ha." Alice's face showed clear disdain; she deeply hated this feeling of powerlessness.
Having experienced the pain of death and watching friends die, the pain that originally belonged to Shen Yinghuan seemed to become real. Alice could no longer comfortably accept the arrangements of fate and gradually developed a desire to control her own destiny.
Klein was slightly stunned. He couldn't comment on this; he knew how unpleasant that feeling was. He felt the same way when he was powerless against the coincidences created by 0-08.
Alice looked at the silent Klein and forced a smile: "Let's change the topic... First, I think although you have realized what a 'clown' should be like, I am naturally like this. What about you?"
"I understand what you mean. I'm just acting, right?" Klein immediately understood what Alice was trying to say.
"Good that you know. Now, the next thing..." Alice's expression suddenly became serious, "Have you thought about how to hide your appearance?"
"Huh?" Klein blinked in confusion, "I could wear glasses and grow a beard..."
Klein suddenly fell silent. He realized that Alice must have thought of this—after all, girls can't grow beards...
"What are you planning to do?" Klein asked, unable to come up with an idea.
"I don't know," Alice shrugged, "Maybe fate has arranged it for me? Anyway, I want to go to Pritz Harbor first."
Alice understood that, given the dramatic death of Megose, she had no choice but to obediently follow orders for now.
"Have you considered returning to the Night Watchers?" Alice's determination to go to Pritz Harbor was strong, but Klein remembered that her resurrection was witnessed by a true god.
Alice glanced at Klein, recalling the goddess's attitude and the timing of her awakening. She softly said, "I think neither the goddess nor fate itself wants me to continue being a Night Watcher."
"..." Klein looked at Alice with a complex expression and asked, "Do you know where Ince Zangwill is now?"
"Do you want revenge?" Alice looked at Klein, "You know, he's a Sequence 5 now and might become a demigod soon."
But Klein's determination was unwavering, and Alice's words didn't deter him. So Alice answered, "I don't know, but maybe you can try divination... and also divine where your promotion opportunities lie—since you don't know where to go anyway."
In the results of their divination, they saw an incredibly prosperous city.
There were busy docks, rows of houses, bustling streets, strange machinery, and thick smoke.
At the end of the vision, rows of gray-blue, off-white, or light-yellow rooftops spiraled upwards, surrounding a magnificent palace and a towering Gothic clock tower.
Dong!
The bell tolled, and they both understood the city they had just seen—legendary "Land of Hope," the "City of All Cities," Backlund!
As for the main peak of the Hornacis mountain range... haha, Klein certainly wouldn't go there.
"So, before we leave, is there anything else you want to do?" With the final matters confirmed, the sad atmosphere returned between them. Realizing they might not see their old friends for a long time, Alice asked Klein.
"I want to see Benson and Melissa one more time..." After a moment of silence, Klein gave this answer.
"Benson and Melissa?" Alice repeated in confusion.
Realizing Alice didn't know about this, Klein explained, "They are my family."
"Family..." Repeating the word, a trace of confusion flashed in Alice's eyes—unlike Klein, Alice still considered herself a pure outsider. At least for now, she couldn't see herself as part of this world.
Moreover...
The goddess's words resurfaced, and Alice felt an indescribable sadness for the original owner of this body—perhaps she had her own family and friends, and she should have had her own name. Now, she no longer existed, and no one would feel sad about it.
If she knew all this, would she feel as powerless and pained as I do?
"Let's go," suppressing the surge of emotions, Alice said in a voice difficult to discern, "Let's see your... your family one last time."
"But they should have already received news of my death, right?" Rationality made Klein hesitate as he looked at Alice, "If I show up now, they'll be shocked, right?"
Hmm, Melissa might faint on the spot... Benson would probably get so nervous he'd start losing hair, then try to calmly persuade me, in the name of the curly-haired baboon... Such thoughts made Klein sad again, and his expression turned a bit bitter.
"You could put on a clown's makeup before going. If you don't know how, I can help you." Alice finally found a chance to get back at Klein for his unintentional mockery at the beginning.
