Bab 48: His backstory

"If you actually think about how much she helped him, you'd know-"

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that the Miles Nick knows and the Miles I know are completely two different people.

Well, Nick has known him for over ten years, but how long have I known him again?

Yeah. Just six months now.

It's been weeks ever since my fateful talk with Nick.

Over the past few weeks, I have spent more time with Miles trying to figure out, trying to see what Nick sees, trying to know what he knows, but instead, I keep going off rails.

I get captured by his sweet talks, by his smile, by his eyes, and his niceness.

These past weeks, we've gotten closer than I could've imagined.

Of course it all changed after I got my first kiss from him. Something changed that night.

I don't know what, but something did.

"Are you listening?" He asks and I snap out of my thoughts.

I smile to him. "Sorry you were saying?"

And now, he's sitting with me during lunch, talking about a movie with me.

Over the weeks, Chloe has been closer to Peter and I could say they could pretty start dating anytime soon.

"Is something wrong darling?" He asks with concern in his voice.

"No no no." I say quickly.

I couldn't tell him that his former best friend thought him as the villain.

"I'm fine." I smile at him and look away.

But as I looked away, I caught a glimpse of Nick sitting in a far corner, staring or should I say, glaring at both of us. Miles precisely.

"Miles?" I call his name as I was still looking at Nick.

"Hmm?"

"What's your backstory?" I finally take my eyes off Nick.

He takes a cracker from my tray. "Back story?" He asks back.

"Yes."

"What do you mean?" He takes another cracker.

"I don't know much about you." I say. "We've known each other for months now, and I don't really know much about you."

"Ditto cutie." He winks.

I nod. "You're right."

"So how about we do this then." He begins. "I'll tell you about myself if you tell me about yourself."

"Deal." I say without hesitation.

I don't have to tell him all about me.

"Okay then. Well, I'm the second child of my family and the only son. I have an elder sister who is married now. She was 7 when my mom had me. When I was five, my dad always maltreated us. My mom, my sister and I. He comes home every night drunk and beat us up.

I hated him so bad it hurt. He would come home, start with my sister, grab my mom by her hair and throw her. Anytime I try to interfere, he'd grab me and treat me like a ball.

There was a time when he poured hot oil on my sister." He laughs. "That day, I saw red. He had just come back from work because he was fired. He worked as an engineer then. Stored big cash while he was still working there. Bastard." He chuckles softly. "He was caught drunk while on the job so they fired him. My mom was cooking dinner for us. She was frying buns for us to eat first.

He came home, broke stuff and when he saw my sister, he carried the pan and poured the oil on her." He pauses. "I always wondered why he'd always attack my sister first. I always wondered why he'd always go for her first. But then later on, I learnt she wasn't my blood sister. My mom had had my sister before she met my old man."

"There was a fateful day he came home drunk. He came so drunk, I was surprised he could still make it home. I was eight then. I was the only one home at that time. My mom and my sister had gone out to meet the neighbors for something I couldn't seem to remember."

"He rambled on things I couldn't remember. But that day, I was angry. I was furious that this man just does as he wants. He hurts us like it's nothing and gets away with it. I mean how can a sick man just be like that? If you hurt someone, you should also get hurt right?" He asks, more to himself. "That was what I thought. I'm sure the bastard was fucking around since he had the money to throw around. He had the money, he did. But he never spent it on us." He pauses. "He never did. So that night, he died." He laughs. "That old man lost his life."

"How?" I ask slowly.

"He went to stand by the balcony and slipped." He chuckles. "He fell from the fifth floor. Isn't that crazy?"

"The fifth floor?"

"Yeah. We were living in this crazy rich apartment which was the talk of the town then. If you are living in that house, you are one of the richest people in town. So my old man fell to his death. Funny enough, that night was a stormy one. It was raining heavily."

"That's..... I don't know what to say."

"It's alright." He shrugs. "I've moved past all that." He takes another cracker.

He then looks around and moves closer to me. "Wanna hear a secret?" He asks with a mischievous smile.

"I killed my old man." He says and starts laughing.

What?

"I killed him. Pushed him off with all my might and watched him fall to his death."

The look on his face,

It wasn't the type that felt remorse. It wasn't the one that felt regret. It had satisfaction all over.

"Wanna know something else?" He asks and I was too scared to reply.

"I don't regret it. I don't regret killing him. Because after that night, our lives became better. All his wealth became ours and he moved out of that house. Our lives has been great ever since then."

"Wanna know another thing?" He asks again.

Oh please no.

"When I pushed him off, I felt a kind of satisfaction in me. A kind of hunger that has been tended to. I felt a weight had been lifted off when I saw blood seeping out of his body. I felt this kind of joy you get when something good happens to you. Like let's say you got into college, you got your first job, or on your wedding day. That's the kind of joy and pleasure I felt." He looks ahead.

"That's the kind of pleasure I felt two years ago also." He chuckles softly. "How I wish I could feel that again." He looks at me and winks. "But soon darling. Soon."

Shit.

The bell rings signalling the end of lunch break.

"Oh shoot." He snaps his fingers together. "Guess I'll know about your backstory another time then."

He stands. "I'll see you later sunshine." He waves and walks off.

What the fuck did I just listen to!
