Henry's reputation preceded him. 

Who was this new Duke and Commander Henry Mattson who had accomplished such feats in battle? Word that he was a lowborn didn't phase the people of the north considering their lack of such structure in their society. Some had heard the opposite, that he intermingled with nobles so much that he was a romantic interest of the princess. 

For the most part, all the people cared about was how he didn't resist when he was sent north and even risked his life during the war to assure a victory for Chemois as they tried to heal. 

However, the truth that the maids and servants saw as Henry pulled off his helmet was more shocking than their preconceived notions.
