Alexandra was restless. She truly didn't know what to do for the first time in her life. On one hand was the love of her life, in another was her father, someone she respected the most.
When Benjamin called her that night, Alexandra sounded hesitant and was quiet most of the time.
"Alex, what's wrong?" Benjamin asked.
"Benji, I..." Alex was hesitant, she's scared that whatever she's going to say might upset the man.
"Did your father say something about us?" Benjamin was anxious. He knew Sir Dominic Zane was a formidable man and an astute businessman. His foresight and decisiveness in all his affairs had made him who he is today. Only he could influence Alexandra's decision directly.
"We spoke today. He has his own concerns." Alexandra said softly.
"Did he reject me?" Benjamin decided to ask directly.
"He's not, I don't think so...I don't know Benji." Truthfully, Alexandra didn't know where his father stand in this matter. He didn't outright reject their relationship, but he didn't accept it either.
"Alex, I'll be there soon. Don't worry, I'll speak to him directly." Benjamin assured Alexandra.
"What? You're coming here?" Alex was surprised.
"Yes, I can't leave you facing it all alone. And it will be best if I can assure your father myself." Benjamin was resolute. He needed to settle this matter soon. The faster he obtain Sir Dominic's approval, the sooner they could get married.
At the hospital, news of Alexandra's cancellation of engagement spread like wildfire. Everyone was shocked and wondered about the actual reason. The engagement celebration was made so lavishly, and everyone thought it would be their wedding celebration next. Who thought that not only was the wedding's not happening anytime soon, but the engagement was also terminated.
When Alex walked into the hospital, most of them looked at her curiously, but looking at her normal expression, with no signs of grievance, drew more speculations as to the reason of the cancellation. Although most of them didn't dare to ask, only some asked her out of concern. Alexandra only replied it was a mutual decision, no other explanation was given. Soon, everyone stopped asking and gave the poor woman her space.
"Dr Zane, is everything alright with you?" Dr Gerald Lee approached her during lunch and sat in front of her.
"Yeah." Alexandra answered with a smile.
"So, does this mean you're single again?" Dr Gerald teased her.
"I'm not so sure about that." Alexandra answered ambiguously.
"What? Oh, is your father looking for a suitable suitor for you already?" Dr Gerald joked.
"Only time will tell. It might already be happening as we speak." Alexandra said while laughing along with Dr Gerald.
"I must get in line fast then! It's my turn now." Again, he joked with Alexandra, prompting another round of laughter from Alexandra.
Suddenly, an announcement of "Code Blue, Room 609" reverberated urgently through the intercom. Nurses exchanged swift glances and doctors halt mid-conversation, their expressions instantly sharpening with focus. Alexandra looked at Dr Gerald and they both immediately stood up and ran towards the said room.
As they approached Room 609, the sense of urgency intensified.
Pushing open the door, Dr Gerald and Alexandra entered a scene of controlled chaos. Medical staff surround a patient's bed, their movements a synchronized dance of efficiency and urgency. The patient, a middle-aged man, lied unconscious, his vital signs fluctuating dangerously on the monitors.
As the attending doctor, Alexandra took command with quiet authority, her voice cutting through the din as she assessed the situation. Nurses relayed crucial information while respiratory therapists adjust ventilator settings. The atmosphere crackled with tension, every heartbeat measured against time.
With a series of rapid decisions, Alexandra orchestrated the resuscitation efforts. Her hands moved with practiced precision as she administered medications and directed the application of life-saving techniques. The room hummed with the hum of medical equipment and the focused murmurs of the team.
Outside the room, anxious family members and concerned hospital staff gathered, their faces etched with worry and hope. They watched the closed door, each passing moment laden with anticipation.
Finally, a breakthrough—a faint flicker of hope on the monitors. The patient's vital signs stabilized, a testament to the team's skill and Alexandra's leadership. A collective sigh of relief filled the room, mingling with subdued murmurs of congratulations and gratitude.
As the crisis subsides, Alexandra stepped back, her expression a mixture of relief and professional satisfaction. Suddenly a thought crossed her mind: This is what I want to do for as long as I can, saving lives. In the aftermath of the Code Blue, Alexandra exited the room, her steps measured and purposeful. Dr Gerald looked at her retreating back, and his gaze darkened unknowingly.
When she exited the hospital building, she felt a deep sense of satisfaction and belonging. She had come a long way to be who she is today. All the sacrifices she had made when she was younger, was for one sole purpose, to be a doctor who saves lives. Alexandra sat on a nearby bench outside the hospital and looked at the majestic building in front of her. She closed her eyes, remembering her childhood, her teenage years, her university days, and finally, her life today. 'Have I done enough?'
A figure silently approached the girl, obvious that she's in a deep thought and didn't want to disturb her. She sat down next to her, waiting for her to be at ease. When she finally opened her eyes, she was shocked to see the person sitting next to her.
"Mom? Mom, is that you??!" Alexandra instantly cried at the sight of her mother.
"Ally, it's me." Her mother said while hugging her tightly.
"Mom, I can't believe this. How come you're here? What happened, are you alright?" Alexandra was surprised to see her mother suddenly appeared out of the blue.
"Yes, I'm fine. It's you that I'm worried about. How are you dear?"
"Mom. I think I'm lost. I don't know what to do." Alexandra said, hugging her mother without letting go.
"Ally, remember the little birdie you saved when you were young?" Her mother asked her.
Alexandra looked at her mother and smiled, yes she remembered it well. That was the first time she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up.
"Don't ever forget who you truly are, and the person you're destined to be." Her mother said while holding her hands. She smiled and kissed Alexandra's forehead.
A loud noise caused Alexandra to open her eyes in shock. An ambulance could be seen rushing into the emergency department lobby and medical personnel rushed to bring the patient in. Alexandra turned her head and said, "Mom…" but there was no one next to her. She's sitting alone on the bench.
"Mom…." Alexandra cried bitterly.
How could it be real? Her mother had passed away when she was young, and she had grown up with her dad. Her relationship with her mother before she passed away had possibly shaped the person Alexandra had become. She had always advice Alexandra not to be swayed by irrelevant matters in life, and focus on her goals. Only when she achieved her goals in life, can she truly say, 'I've lived.' That's what her mother always said to her.
Alexandra remembered what her mother had said when she dreamt of her just now.
"Don't ever forget who you truly are, and the person you're destined to be." She whispered to herself.
