Bab 9: Recovery
Blinking, I look up at Raehla in an unfamiliar room. I'm in a ward bed and she is in a nearby chair, reading. I try to sit up but I'm groggy and she turns her head to look at me.
"Ah, you're awake." She tenderly lifts my hand, leans over and stares into my eyes for a moment. Her irises are golden and slightly enlarged by her glasses. "Pupils normal," she remarks.
Immediately she places a pen into my hand and a clipboard under it. "Sign this, please."
Feeling weak, but in a strangely good mood, I ask "What is this? Am I famous now?"
"It's your enlistment application to Wand Division. You will be assigned the rank of corporal-priest, and your official title will be Wand Bearer. Your orders are to quarter here at Juqus and answer directly to me. And I answer directly to Lord-Bishop Karten."
Karten? Even I know of Karten, the all-powerful head of the Holy Pūr Military. Depending on who you ask, Karten is either the overly cruel madman who designed the kingdom's crushing victories, or the mysterious and slippery figure that deftly keeps the Holy Army out of the royal family's in-fighting.
Remembering my promise, and feeling like this might be fun, I sign.
It's now late afternoon and I ask Raehla about Lissa and the Gli attack on the yard. She stares at me, pondering. "You both did quite well. But, can you stand now? Lord-Bishop Karten wants to meet you."
