Bab 7: 07. Fraudulent Djinn
At most, Djinns could grant mid-tier talents like <Sword novice> or <Martial Arts adept>. But when it came to such basic talents, it wasn't cost-effective. If you wanted truly supreme talents, making deals with Djinns wouldn't cut it. It had to be with Greater demons or even the legendary Archdemon himself. Asking for a great talent from a Djinn was just begging to get scammed. You would only get a result so watered down, you wouldn't even recognize the thing you asked for. It would be like asking for a Bugatti and then getting a Prius.
Lucius had known this, so he was never expecting to get a good talent in the first place. From the beginning, he had not been asking for a talent, only something that appeared like one. When someone checked for his talent, they would see the impressive [Supreme Student] talent, but that was all—he had no benefits or any abilities from it. In a way, it was nothing more than a fancy title.
The reason the Djinn couldn't harm him was that he had asked Lucius to pay the corresponding price. Naturally, all things considered, the price he would have to pay would be negligible. What Lucius had asked for was just an elaborate and fancy sticker. There was no way the Djinn could have expected what happened. After all, there was no one stupid enough to try something like this.
Even if you managed to gain a powerful-sounding talent, people would eventually expect you to start showing results. If you still couldn't show any signs of talent, you would be brutally outed as a fraud, and the consequences would be dire. The treatment of someone with high talent that still showed no signs of developing was much harsher than that of someone who had no talent to begin with.
The reason Lucius dared to play this elaborate game was that he had something nobody else in this world would have—A system! With his system, he would be able to earn Love Points and exchange them for a combination of talents that would be no worse than his fake [Supreme Student] talent. Besides, Lucius had also left the description of the talent vague enough that he would be given plausible deniability should he show some flaws.
The poor Djinn couldn't possibly know all of Lucius's plans, but he did know one thing—he was screwed! Hunched over, the Djinn looked towards Lucius with a set of pleading eyes, but he was only met with a ruthless smile.
"Please, my lord, spare me! It was not my fault; I was ignorant—"
But before the Djinn could finish, Lucius cut him off and, just like before, spoke the same sentence.
"Jump his ass!"
The revolutionary soldiers didn't need to be told twice and, with smiles that made even the pure-blooded demon shiver, they began their one-sided beating.
"Wait… n-no… please! Not my jewels!!"
The foul-mouthed demon faced its early retribution as its pig-like squeals echoed throughout the room. The revolutionary soldiers were prepared to kill the annoying Djinn, but Lucius quickly ordered them to spare its life.
With the new contract formed between them, Lucius had a mark that could allow him to summon the specific demon another time as long as the conditions and timing were right. The ability to summon a specific demon could still be of use if handled correctly. In its most basic form, the Djinn could even be used as extra combat power. Besides, even if the Djinn didn't end up killing his enemies, just sending it into his enemies' presence would surely disgust them half to death. Either way, the value of the Djinn to Lucius was much higher alive than dead.
Time passed, and now the day had come for Lucius to leave. Lucius looked in the mirror and took a peek at his reflection. He saw a handsome young man with burning crimson eyes staring back at him. He was dressed in a rather fashionable white academy uniform with faint blue, adorned with a bright gold badge showing the fortress symbol that represented Sanctuary. Lucius nodded. He was rather pleased with his new appearance, and he didn't know if it was because Lucius was designed to be a character who infiltrated the academy, but the school uniform really did look quite good on him.
Before leaving his room, Lucius looked at the place he had spent the last few weeks in and couldn't help but be overcome with a strange feeling. This was the first place he had come into this world, so it was natural for it to stir strange feelings in Lucius. It wasn't that he was overly attached to it or anything; it was just that this room would represent something new for him. It was the place and start of his new life. It was the place where the name Marcus was left behind, and from now on, all that anyone would care about would be the name Lucius Vexx. There was a faint feeling of melancholy as Lucius stepped out, closing the door on the room and the last attachment he had to his previous world.
Lucius was walking through the corridors of the barracks and picked up his briefcase that Albert had long since prepared for him. The briefcase had nothing too special inside of it—just a few sets of clothes and some spare change that he could use on his travels. Lucius originally wanted to bring more money; after all, he was the de facto head of an organization. In his previous life, wouldn't that make him akin to a CEO or at least a wealthy underground boss? Since coming to this world and deciding to stay, Lucius at least wanted the ability to spend money with the arrogance of a truly wealthy man. Unfortunately, Lucius's naive dreams had been quickly shut down by Albert.
