It took him a few seconds to respond. “Go back to the office, I dare say.” He pinched the bridge of his nose and blinked rapidly. “There isn’t anywhere else for me to go, and there is something…It was good of the Americans to smooth over the…Well, it was in their own best interests, given it was one of their weapons that did the…” He gave himself a shake and straightened his coat. “I’m assigning Ogilvie to look into this. Unless, of course, you’d prefer to do it yourself?”

I shook my head. I didn’t know what he was talking about, and I didn’t want to know.

“What about you, James?”

“I?” I looked around, at something of a loss. “I’m going…I’m going home.” My voice cracked, and I struggled to regain control. “My letter of resignation will be on your desk in the morning.”
