"And why did you do it? It's obvious that you don't need to fight him; he's so in love with you, Vernon."

"Because I want to free you from him," Vernon answered without a second thought. "I can't bear to see you get hurt anymore, and the only way to put an end to it is by dethroning him."

Vernon chose not to disclose his original motive. Initially, he returned to New York and began his slow revenge because he despised Chloe and Vincent for consigning him to a nightmare existence.

However, his motive shifted after growing closer to Chloe and he soon realized he was irrevocably falling for her again. His love became so profound that even the slightest pain Chloe suffered caused him immense distress.
