Birthdays were hardly anything special when you were the unwanted child of an unfavoured concubine and a female one at that. Her mother might have had a brief moment of glory in her youth where she'd been the pampered new favourite of the master but time withered even the loveliest of blossoms and in its place, new ones would bloom.
Who would remember the old when there was always something new and exciting to replace it?
Now, she sat in a boudoir surrounded by luxuries her mother could only dream of and it was like everything and nothing had changed. Side Concubine Wu was as much an empty title in Prince Xi's estate, the harem in his rear court ever-expanding as a result of the empress dowager's zealousness for a grandchild through her favourite son.

Queeniecat (1) Accompanying bridal entourage: There is no uncumbersome way of translating this but the idea is a female servant who follows a daughter to the household she marries into. Often times this is either a middle-aged female servant who would take charge of the new bride’s daily necessities or it could be a young female servant that grew up together with her mistress and who could serve as a confidante. In certain dynasties and regions, it became customary for the servant to be taken by the husband as a concubine, whose allegiances would, at least on the surface, lie with her original mistress.
(2) Daughters are flesh and blood made out of water: a phrase from famous 1700s classical novel “Dream of the Red Chamber”, used to describe the gentleness and all encompassing nature of what used to be perceived as the ideal woman in that era.
