Queeniecat (1) A husband and wife joined together at the hair: reference to the Chinese custom of tying a knot from a lock of hair from husband and wife. This line is from Su Wu, a poet of the Eastern and Western Han Dynasties (when there were two at the same time) and written for the wife he loved. It’s an ode praising the ideal marriage where husband and wife did not keep secrets from each other and shared an open love without suspicions.
(2) Love-brain: a derogatory internet slang used to describe someone who was wholeheartedly invested in their romantic relationships and partners, to the detriment of other aspects of life.
(3) Well-water doesn’t mix with river water: a common phrase that meant to mind one’s business whilst others minded theirs; keep out of each other’s affairs.
(4) The actual idiom is when the husband sings, the wife follows: the traditional model of conjugal happiness that is patriarchal. In terms of pronunciation, the characters for wife and husband sound very similar and so the idiom can be easily modified.
