Bab 13: The Multimillionaire Mawdrey
At the time, the benefactor and financial collaborator of Dracko was known as the multimillionaire Mawdrey Arnigie, or simply Mr. "A." Resources were never scarce for this multimillionaire, especially when it came to constructing the subterranean caverns for Dracko.
Most of his fortune came from his steel company, Mawdrey Steel, which was continuously growing. As a result, he consistently sent a variety of resources to his esteemed researcher. Despite not knowing the exact location of these caverns—having never visited or inquired about their whereabouts—he was certain that he was funding something that would eventually double his fortune. He believed in Dracko's conviction and was confident that the research would yield excellent results.
However, despite the high investments, the technology of the time was not advanced enough to quickly unravel the mysteries of the samples collected by Dracko. But day by day, week by week, he and his team improved, ultimately achieving outstanding results. Dracko vividly remembers the day he found traces of developing life in the latest samples they had collected.
As soon as he placed his first sample under the microscope, he realized that what he had was more valuable than anything money could buy. Upon making this discovery, he rushed by helicopter to inform his financier. Upon hearing the news, Mr. Mawdrey ordered nearly a hundred helicopters to transport materials to the subterranean complex.
Given that helicopters were still a novelty at the time and a luxury item for the few, Mr. Mawdrey hastily ordered 90 of them. However, this wasn't possible due to a shortage of specialized labor. Instead of immediately creating small conventional helicopters, the supplier invested in the creation of large helicopters with a much higher cargo capacity, significantly speeding up Dracko's desired construction.
Both Mawdrey and Dracko were as euphoric as children with new toys upon the discovery. However, since the construction of the subterranean cavern complex would take some time to complete, it was clear that Dracko's experiments and research couldn't be put on hold. Together, Mawdrey and Dracko decided to temporarily build a wooden shed—not with the abundant local wood, but with wood brought in from afar by dozens of helicopters to preserve the scenery that captivated Dracko every time he arrived at the site.
In no time, the enormous shed was ready, equipped with all the necessary equipment. All of this was built in secrecy, with well-paid workers ensuring that all secrets remained hidden. Helicopter flights were always conducted at night to prevent anyone from suspecting what was being transported.
Unfortunately, several years passed without Mawdrey seeing any significant profit from Dracko's research. Mawdrey passed away in August 1919, leaving part of his vast fortune to charity institutions, which were actually fronts for Dracko's various companies. He also bequeathed the entire subterranean complex, known as the Mawdrey Caverns, to Dracko, visiting it only twice in his lifetime.
Dracko honored him by naming the caverns after Mawdrey, a gesture of gratitude towards the person who had most helped him pursue a dream that, no matter how close it seemed, was never fully realized.
