A week passed quickly in Colonel Cleaner's eyes as he tried to adapt to the new routine imposed by Sergeant Kowalsk. Although the underground was Kowalsk's domain, and only someone authorized by him could access it, this did not apply to the Colonel when it came to Last Haven Base. He not only walked freely throughout the base but also gave orders to anyone who was there. In the eyes of the soldiers, he avoided giving direct orders to Colonel Cleaner, but when he was alone with him in the Colonel's room, he dictated the guidelines that were obeyed without delay.
Finally, to avoid further wear and tear, Colonel Cleaner thought it best to make Kowalsk the second in command throughout the base. Despite how absurd it seemed, his orders were to be carried out to the letter. The Colonel didn't mind this, as he hadn't seen his soldiers behave so orderly in a long time.
The fear that the soldiers felt towards Kowalsk turned into pure respect, for under this man's command, they found the strength to face the fearsome dragons that had long made them their prey. Under Kowalsk's tutelage and that of his subordinates, they not only prevailed against some smaller dragons but also found a new source of food: dragon meat. Of course, before consumption, the meat was treated, roasted, seasoned, and analyzed by Doctor Kami to ensure there were no dangerous toxic levels for human consumption.
Each day of the week, they split into hunting groups for dragons, and each group was led by Sergeant Kowalsk or one of his friends. The soldiers competed with each other to accompany each of them, as each had a unique specialty in the hunt.
The groups were no smaller than fifteen, and it was also necessary to leave some soldiers to protect the base. In case of an attack, several dreikis stood guard, and not even a half-dozen small dragons would be a match for them.
Thilaíla's group, called the Shadow Group, consisted of fifteen soldiers: five of them would attack a small dragon using stealth tactics, while the remaining ten were responsible for transporting the captured dragon. A heavily armed and armored military truck was used for this task. The soldiers had to act quickly, loading their quarry into the truck bed and departing immediately, taking the captured dragon back to the base.
Thilaíla, using her telepathy, detected a small dragon isolated from the others, signaled to the soldiers in her group, and when they were ready, she paralyzed the dragon's mind with her powers while the soldiers administered prepared liquids by Doctor Kami that put the dragon to sleep instantly. They then restrained the animal with thick chains, large padlocks, and locks, as the order was to bring them back alive.
Gareno's group was called the Attack Group, and it consisted of fifteen soldiers whose task was to track a small dragon, attract its attention, and at the same time, flee from it. Gareno patiently waited for his prey, and when the dragon appeared, he faced it head-on, knocking it out with a single punch. Afterward, the soldiers loaded the dragon into the transport vehicle and set off in search of another beast. Gareno stayed in the truck bed, alert, to make sure none of the dragons woke up during the journey.
Sergeant Kowalsk's group was the Ambush Group, and he taught step by step how to set up each trap, ensuring that it posed no danger to his soldiers. Thanks to Doctor Kami's knowledge, they could use sleep grenades, also known as "bolotas." These grenades were thrown into the dragon's mouth, leaving it no choice but to fall asleep.
The soldiers who accompanied Kowalsk were the happiest, as they had the opportunity to put into practice everything they learned, unlike the other groups who couldn't use Thilaíla's telepathy or Gareno's strength and only acted as helpers in transporting the dragons.
There was also the group that accompanied Troy on hunts. To keep up with his performance, all three cargo vehicles existing in the base were necessary. At least thirty soldiers followed Troy: ten in each vehicle. They admired the speed and ferocity with which Troy, Kowalsk's dragon companion, hunted his prey.
Troy had the advantage of being similar to a dragon, having faced these beings before and thus accumulating experience. He knew exactly how to immobilize them after a strong bite to the neck. It was not uncommon for him to tear his prey apart if it dared to face him. His ferocity and agility made him a formidable opponent, and it was only after hunting ten dragons that he calmed down.
Out of those ten, only nine were taken back to the base, while Troy devoured his prey with voracity. The soldiers admired and feared him at the same time, as there was a suspicion that he might change his menu at any moment. For this reason, no one got too close to him.
Doctor Kami was not part of any group, but he was always ready to assist any of them if they asked for his help.
Colonel Cleaner's admiration for Kowalsk grew with each day that he saw his command over the men. On Kowalsk's advice, the Colonel accompanied each group on their dragon-hunting incursions and was impressed by the skill of each of them. However, his growing admiration was directed at Kowalsk, who could command them perfectly without any questioning.
Meanwhile, in the underground, the number of imprisoned dragons exceeded sixty, and the place was partially occupied by them. Despite the strong chains that bound them, giving the impression of being insufficient, Drakissa, an ally of Kowalsk, stood ready with two hundred dreikis under her absolute command. They awaited only a command to advance and destroy the dragons, but that was not Kowalsk's desire. He intended to use these dragons as combat mounts, giving his allies an advantage over their enemies.
At a distance, in a safe location, Colonel Cleaner observed this madness and questioned himself whether he wasn't a madman himself for allowing something so insane.
