Bab 25: Choices of a Lifetime
Know that everything happened exactly as I told you. What I didn't tell you is that I never slept during the experiments they conducted on me, and everything they learned from those experiments, I heard and learned from as well.
To keep from going crazy, I imagined I was conversing with them, asking many questions, and imagining they understood me. When they responded to each other, I convinced myself they were talking to me.
I witnessed and felt every time they drew blood from me, mixed it with various other liquids, and put it all back into me. I saw when they developed the first dragon eggs, although at the time I had no idea what they were.
I listened to everything and everyone but could neither see nor respond because I breathed through intravenous hoses that were all over my body, along with dozens of wires through my head and various other equipment that I was sure was not yet in public use.
Initially, they said I would be a unique experiment, after all, they needed me on the battlefield as a leader. So they began to instill rules and laws in my mind, along with military strategies and excerpts from important documents that I never knew about.
I was kept for many years inside a square filled with liquid, and the water surrounded me within that glass box. But as technology advanced, they moved me to a glass bubble.
Now the liquid was different, denser and darker, yet it provided a great sense of comfort, and my body aged much slower than normal.
Do you remember when I said I asked what year it was every year? They never told me the truth because for every 10 years that had passed for everyone else, only one year seemed to have passed for me. The experiment they conducted on me gave me that advantage.
There were people over 80 years old working on this project involving me, and I often heard them say they envied the age I appeared to have.
Because while 50 or 60 years had passed for them, and they were nearing the end of their lives, for me, only five or six years had passed.
Yet, if they knew how much I envied them for the freedom they had, for the happy moments they spent and shared with their friends...
My best moments in that place were when they confided their precious secrets to me.
Because they knew I couldn't hear them, and if I did, I would never get out of there, so they could tell me all their secrets.
For how could I tell anything to anyone in that infinite prison they kept me in?
So day after day, month after month, and year after year, I developed a deep state of sadness and waited for even the smallest opportunity to end the experiment that was me.
Without a wife, without children, without family, what good was life if I couldn't live it?
But one day, many years ago, an opportunity arose that I couldn't take advantage of because of listening to others' secrets.
One of the scientists of the time, named Macarly Joe, had only one son, young Macarly Jimmy, who had an accident falling off his bicycle. Initially, it seemed simple, but it later became complicated, and young Macarly Jimmy remained hospitalized in critical condition.
Every afternoon, the poor father of the boy told me his situation as if I could do something when I couldn't even speak.
But from listening to the treatment they were giving me, about the deficiencies and advantages in my blood and body, I ended up learning and knew exactly what Macarly Joe had to do to save his son.
It was precisely during this time that I longed for an end to my life and thought that when Joe's situation with his son ended, I would also end my situation.
