Bab 37: Chapter 37 - Ninth Calamity
The next day came and the threat that Zach was worried about didn't arrive which greatly relieved them and were now only waiting for the next calamity to happen. Everyone could be found inside the base talking to each other trying to calm their nerves from the next calamity to come.
In one of the watchtowers, Zach could be found together with Ethan, Mike, and Carl looking at the people below as they were also waiting for the notification. Like everyone else, they were also a little nervous thinking if they would again be caught off guard in the beginning which would kill some of them.
"What calamity do you think it will be this time?" Ethan asked out of curiosity.
"I don't know. I just hope that it won't be as bad as what we are facing now." Mike replied normally.
"Just tell all the Rangers to get ready at all times." Zach then just ordered as he no longer wanted any more survivors to get killed.
Hearing Zach, Carl then immediately used his radio and called on every Ranger to stand by and wait for an order.
After that, everyone then just continues to wait before finally hearing the same notification sound again.

[World Cleansing Procedure 8: Hurricane Calamity is over.]
[Commencing World Cleansing Procedure 9: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Calamity.]
Right after the notification, a loud thunder surprises everyone which makes them all look up as the sky starts getting dark despite its only in the afternoon. Not long after that, raindrops suddenly poured down and made everyone wet. No one yet made a move when a loud thunder happened again which woke them up.
"Everyone needs to calm down. Just like what it said, it's only Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms so as long as we head inside our houses, this calamity will be nothing. However, I am not saying that we are completely safe, so go back to your houses and wait for further instructions." Zach announced it to everybody. He doesn't know if they have heard it but it does not matter as long as some of them have listened which he knew that would immediately scatter throughout the base.
With that, the survivors then slowly return to their houses while some continue to stay for a while wanting to play in the rain but were forced to leave as the lightnings were very scary to look at.
"Looks like we will be dealing with flood this time due to heavy rain." Carl suddenly commented as he remembered the time when the snow back then melted which caused the water level to rise.
"Maybe not. The ground was pretty much covered with sand and dirt. They will only probably be absorbed by the rain." Zach replied while still contemplating. He also felt relieved knowing what calamity they were dealing with this time, however, he didn't want to underestimate it not wanting to miss anything that might regret them later on.
"But just to be sure, have some of the Rangers continue monitoring outside the base and report immediately if there is anything unusual. That will be all." Zach ordered since they were not talking about a simple rain, it was clearly said it was a heavy rain added by the fact that it would continue for the next three weeks.
Right after that, Zach then dismissed everyone as he headed straight back to his house wanting to be with his family knowing that they had yet survived another calamity while thinking of a way to have the survivors enjoy by themselves since they can't have a party outside due to the rain and thunderstorms.
Time passed by and night came in and under Zach's orders, everyone had their treats they could eat or drink by themselves. Everyone was enjoying in their own way not minding the heavy rain and thunderstorms happening outside.
Meanwhile, Zach was also having their own celebration of their houses seeing the children eating happily with Hannah and Vanessa looking after them. Zoey, Rose, and Shiela were also enjoying themselves while drinking wine. Of course, there are Adam and Eve who have now become so big that one would confuse them with a wolf.
"Do you think it's a girl?" Jenny suddenly asked seeing her leaning on Zach's chest while caressing her belly. She's been pregnant for two months now, and the hump on his belly was already noticeable to everyone.
"Why? Do you already have a name in mind if it's a girl?" Zach replied with a smile while caressing Jenny's shoulders. He then also caressed her stomach with his other hand worried and excited at the same time.
"Hehe. Of course, I have thought about it." Jenny said with a smile. She still couldn't believe that she would be a mother soon and she was very excited about it.
"What would be her name then?" Zach asked curiously as he could see Jenny's excitement.
"That would be a secret for now." Jenny, however, didn't answer and just smiled at him.
"Then it better be a girl because I will pamper her very much." Zach said before giving Jenny a kiss.
Following that, Zach and his family then just continued to enjoy themselves before finally resting for the night since no disturbing reports had been sent to them. However, just to make sure that everything was all right, Zach left the house when everyone already sleeping to see it for himself and only went back after seeing that everything was fine.
The next morning came, and everyone felt like not waking up at all as the weather was just too nice to keep on sleeping especially since the sky was still dark with the rain kept on pouring down without stopping added by the fact that loud thunder could be heard from time to time.
However, the Rangers were quite disturbed seeing them all wearing coats and boots while patrolling the base. Nothing really bad happened in particular, it's just that they have all seen that the ground has become a little muddy.
Zach, himself, also had seen it however, it was still not something they needed to worry about since it was completely a normal thing when raining. He then believed that it was not something else with just the ground becoming like that due to the mixing of sand and the earth.
"Do you think it's possible for a mud flood to happen?" In one of the watchtowers, Carl and Zach could be found together while looking outside the base with the former asking the latter about the disturbing thoughts inside his mind.
"I hope it will not come to that." Zach replied while also having such an idea. He pretty much also thought that it was possible but seeing that nothing had happened after a night of heavy rain made him believe that it was not possible for now that is.
With that, Zach and Carl just remained in the watchtower looking for any abnormalities while also telling the other Rangers about the possibility of a mud flood. Telling them to immediately report it to him if something had caught their attention.
For the following days, the base then worked just fine seeing everyone remain in their houses as they had nothing better to do due to the heavy rains and thunderstorms however, after a week of heavy rain, one of the Rangers finally caught sighting of abnormalities which stirs them up.
Holding their binoculars, Zach saw a pile of mud from the west slowly moving in their direction. In fact, he really thought that sooner or later such a thing would happen as the water level never once rose after a week of heavy rain and only made the ground muddier.
Fortunately, they have seen it this early leaving them some time to prepare for it. Looking at it for the last time, Zach then immediately ordered someone to call Edward, Jackson, Bod, and Thomas to him before telling the rest to call every abled man and gather them all here in thirty minutes as they had something to do that required everyone's efforts.
Right after that, the base then started bustling with noise as all the abled men were suddenly called which gained everyone's curiosity while also starting to worry thinking that something might have happened.
After talking to Edward, Jackson, Bob, and Thomas, Zach then could now be found standing with them inside the watchtower looking at the probably more than a hundred men including the Rangers. He can also see the women just right at their doors looking at him waiting for what he was about to say.
"I have very bad news for everybody. There is a mud flood coming in this direction. It was moving slowly but it will come. I have gathered you all as there is a way for us to prevent them from the base and it requires all of you here." Zach announced without sugarcoating anything.
"We will be racing against time but if we work together then we will be able to survive this calamity." Zach followed as it was now very critical as he knew very well how dangerous a mud flood was. Though the fortified walls could now be of use, he, however, wasn't sure if they could hold up.
"We will help!!"
"Yeah!"
"Tell us what to do!"
Hearing many voices agreeing with him, Zach immediately transferred the floor to Thomas and his group as they had already come up with the countermeasure. For the next thirty minutes, everyone listened carefully to things that they had to do while Zach himself also prepared himself by taking out probably hundreds of logs not that far from the base.
Zach knew that everyone was very dying to know just where the supplies and resources had come from but because of the rule of not questioning such things, no one has voiced them out. This time, however, was now pretty obvious but he didn't have a choice but to do it and let them think what they want to think about it.
Following that, everyone then started carrying logs heading at a reasonable distance outside of the base. The vehicles were also of great help as they were now racing against time since the mud flood would probably arrive by tonight at the earliest or tomorrow.
The idea that Edward and his group have come up with is to build a wall in a triangular shape. It was quite a simple one that even Zach had come up with it. This was not to stop the mud flood but to change the direction of it away from the base. Of course, they have to build the wall as sturdy as possible, or else it would be pushed instead.
Despite the heavy rain and thunderstorms, everyone was completely unfazed even if they were already covered with mud. Everyone was working hard not because they were doing it on Zach's orders but to protect the children, women, elderly, and every survivor living in the base.
Without stopping, everyone continued working as layers of log walls kept on standing sturdily. With everyone's efforts, the walls were completed before night came even though it's always been dark. It was done hastily but they were sure that it was sturdy and was just hopeful that it would work.
The hundreds of survivors returned to the base and thanks to the rain, they only needed to clean a little but everyone refused to wash themselves as they were still waiting knowing that they would probably be needed when something wrong would happen.
Meanwhile, Zach could be found on the west watchtower observing the mud flood who were getting close wanting to see it himself. He already told Jenny and his family that he wouldn't be getting back as he planned on staying up all night to look after the base.
Everyone was anxious but they were still hopeful since they had already survived many calamities for the past few months, and they all thought that it would be the same this time. They then just could be seen looking at the watchtower where Zach was staying waiting for any instructions.
