"Fuck!" I grumbled as the aivard came to a stop at a small house at the edge of town. It was your average one story house, except for the fact the white fence that lined the front yard was smashed and the front door was torn off the hinges and laying in the yard in splinters.
I looked to the aivard then pointed to the sky. The evo's eyes followed my finger and looked to the sky.
"Fly around the area and growl really loud if you see anymore evos getting close." I told it. The aivard barked in affirmation then took a running start before jumping into the air and flapping this wings and soaring high.
War crime climbed down from my back and crept cautiously over the broken fence. I followed War crime and drew my Jasko as we made our way inside the house. The house interior of the house was completely destroyed. Furniture was thrown all over the place, glass from picture frames and windows covered the ground along with the tattered remains of cushions and end tables.
'This doesn't look good…' I thought as I walked through the foyer and into the living room. In the center of the floor was a small puddle of blood soaked into the off white carpet. A trail of blood streaked through a hallway that lead to the kitchen.
War crime and I followed the trail through the hallway to the kitchen where we were greeted by a worrying sight. Splayed on the kitchen table was the corpse of a thrad. It's head was blown off and the remains of its skull was plastered all over the stove and wall. To the right of the corpse was a man, laying face down in a pool of blood.
I quickly rushed over to check on the man. I rolled the man over and saw that he was still breathing. He had a three claw wounds across his chest, they were pretty shallow and didn't explain why he was unconscious. The massive knot on his forehead however did.
"Hey wake up!" I yelled and slapped his face a few times. He groaned and blinked his eyes a few times before they snapped open and he bolted up.
"Amy!" He yelled as he sat up and nearly head-butted me.
"Whoa! Calm down! Your wife and child are safe!" I said. The panic in his eyes lessened as my words started to register.
"Amy and Lyle are okay?" He asked. I nodded then turned to look at the thrad corpse.
"You kill that?" I asked. He nodded then tried to stand only to wince and stumbled a bit.
"Hold on, let me help you…" I said then moved to grab him under his arm. As I helped him to his feet he stared at my face and a look of recognition flashed in his eyes.
"You're that splicer kid!" He shouted.
"Yeah…" I said as War crime jumped onto the kitchen counter and eyed me possessively. "Lets worry about that later, the factory is under attack by a massive horde of thrads and it won't be too long until they all attack the town."
"What's a thrad?" He asked as I lead him through the kitchen towards the front door.
"The evo you killed in the kitchen." I said. The man looked at me slightly perplexed.
"I didn't kill that thing…" The man said. We made it back to the living room when war crime started hissing again, he rushed around me and took a defensive stance in front of me. I soon heard the sound of rushing footsteps heading towards the front door.
"Hurry he's in the kitchen!" A annoyingly familiar voice yelled.
'Oh for fucks sake…' I thought as my half brother Logan rushed into the living room.
"No he's in here Logan." I said flatly. Logan's eyes grew wide as they laid eyes on me and skidded to a stop. A man and a woman crashed into him and nearly knocked him over. Logan quickly recovered and glared at me.
"What the fuck are you doing here splicer trash?!" He snapped.
"Trying to help the man that's bleeding all over my shoulder. You know nothing major or anything." I said sarcastically. Logan opened his mouth to say something when the woman and the man he entered with rushed around him to take the bleeding man from me.
"Set him down on the couch!" The man ordered while the woman started looking through the bag she had slung over her shoulder. Now that I had a chance to look at both the man and the woman I recognized them both. They woman was Alison Newton, Logan's mom and the head trauma nears at St. Julian hospital. The man was Isaac Newton, Logan's Step-father and an EMT for St. Julian. While I couldn't stand their guts almost as much as I couldn't stand Logan's they were the perfect people to have in this situation.
"I'd love too, but we need to get out of here! The sheriff department is about to announce a evacuation order for the town!" I exclaimed. Logan curled his upper lip at me jumped in my face.
"How the fuck would you know what the sheriff department is going to do? Shut up and just do what my mom says!" Logan snarled.
"And wait for more thrads to come and attack? We need to get somewhere safe and then worry about stitching him up." I countered.
"Are you fucking talking back to me?" Logan growled. Isaac stopped mid examining the part of the wound he could see and turned to look at me.
"Why would there be more thrads coming. Logan said he killed one thrad already?" Isaac asked.
"He said that the factory was attacked." The injured man said.
"ATTACKED?!" Everyone exclaimed.
'Why does no one listen to me…' I thought.
"There was a containment breech and enough people have died already today, I'll tell everyone everything after we get to safety!" I said.
"No, how about you tell us now!" Logan barked then poked me in the chest. Just then a loud growled echoed outside. It was the aivard's growl.
"What was that?" Logan demanded.
"Our cue to leave! Come on War crime!" I shouted then pushed past Logan then hurried towards the door nearly dragging the injured man with me. War crime followed on my heels. Logan and his mom and step-dad hurried after me. As we left the front door I heard loud inhuman screeching and growling coming from the woods.
"What is that noise?!" Logan demanded.
"The fucking tooth fairy!" I snapped, finally tired of his cluelessness. "What the fuck do you think it is? A few hundred thrads coming to kill us!"
"We need to get out of here!" Alison exclaimed.
'Oh for fucks sake!'
"Did you bring your steed and carriage?" I asked Alison and Isaac.
"Yes…" Alison said slowly then flashed her husband a look. "…but there is only enough room for four people in the carriage."
'Could you have at least make the lie less obvious.' I thought. The last time Alison saw my dad she was bragging that Isaac had just bought a new carriage that could fit at least six people in it.
"That's fine, I have my own ride." I said then pawned the injured man off on Logan and Isaac then rushed out of the yard and onto the street. Looking down the street to the edge of the neighborhood where the street turned into a country road and lead into the woods I could see figures shambling around. They were at least fifteen hundred yards away and heading our way.
"Is there anybody in the neighboring houses?!" I shouted at the others.
"No, this neighborhood is mostly deserted." The injured man replied as Logan and Isaac lead him over to their steed carriage next door.
"Good! The thrads are here!" I yelled. War crime hissed and jumped in front of me glaring at a overgrown bush in front of the house across the street. A thrad suddenly pounced from the bush and rushed me. I jumped back as War crime sprayed the thrad then jumped to the side, dodging the thrads jaws. The poor evo quickly died in a pool of its own mush.
I drew my jasko and swept it towards the abandoned house. A sitter of movement drew my attention to the broken down carriage in the drove way. A thrad burst from around the side of the carriage and ran after Logan and the others. I quickly aimed the barrel at the thrad and pulled the trigger. Hitting it in its hind leg. It fell to the ground but kept crawling fast towards the group, hissing hungrily.
I nearly pulled the trigger a second time when a streak of red suddenly dove from the sly and pounced on the thrads back. The curved talons in its middle wings digging into the thrads back as the front and rear wings flapped vigorously and lifted the thrad into the air. It flew high in the sky while holding the thrad. When it was high enough that it was just barely visible it let go of the thrad. The evo rapidly hurtled to the ground. It hit the pavement in front of the injured man's house with a wet crunch followed by a gush as blood, gore and pungent viscera. The whole spectacle reminded me of a rain drop hitting the windowsill of my bedroom window.
"What the fuck was that?!" Logan yelled.
"My ride." I replied then looked back at the figures in the woods. The thrads were closer now and stampeding down the road towards me. "Fuck! Stamped! Hurry and get that carriage moving!"
I looked back at Logan and his group to see them pulling off in the carriage, the two steeds drawing it racing off at full speed.
'Of course…' I thought as I watched them ride away.
"War crime, come on." I said patting my shoulder. War crime quickly climbed up and I waved my arm to signal the aivard to land.
The aivard swooped down and landed in front of me. I wasted no time jumping on his back and urging the aivard forward. He quickly took flight and soared over neighborhood.
"Follow that carriage." I ordered the aivard as I pointed at Isaac's carriage. It let out a confident bark and zeroed in on the carriage.
'The least they could have done was wait for me…geez…' I thought.
Evo Fact: While Steeds are the most common evo found world wide for transportation and shipping there are a few other regional types. Namely the Crawnuff, Yaw, and Saw-Lager. Crawnuff are found in coastal or mountainous countries, Yaw are found in more forest regions, and Saw-Lager are found in countries with tundras.
