"Are you sure you actually want me tampering with such an important piece of jewelry?
I mean, it's been in the Royal family for millennia, at least." I asked
"Well I wasn't before, but after seeing you create that spell from scratch in your blood I'm more than certain that you are probably one of the only people alive that can do what I want." Turak'Kahn said. I shrugged reluctantly in agreement.
I didn't really know how well people back in the Tolapo village were versed in spell craft. I knew that many there could read and speak the runic language, but according to my auntie, not many people now a days actually practiced it the way my grandmother did.
"OK, so what sort of spell do you want enchanted onto the necklace?" I asked. A slow smile creeped across the Pharaoh's lips.
"A spell to make my wife's greatest dream come true!" The Pharaoh announced happily. When Jane heard this, she stilled, and her eyes grew wide.
"By the gods you don't seriously mean…?"
"Yes! I want Chase Kingston to create a spell that will temporarily fuse an evo with its splicer!" He declared rather loudly.
'Wait…did he say fuse?!' I thought. While my mind was still reeling, Jane groaned loudly and shook her head.
"Father, not this pipe dream again! How long are you and your mother going to waste time searching for a mythical spell?" Jane groaned.
I was a little shocked by the irritation in her voice, I'd only heard it a few times when she was first complaining about me creating shaping.
"I'm done wasting time looking for a millennia old spell, Bug. That's why I'm hiring your classmate to create a new one." Turak'Kahn replied. Jane paled slightly at her father's words.
"You want Chase to make one…" She breathed, then turned to look at me. Whatever look she saw on my face must have terrified her because she paled even more. "…oh no, there's that smirk again…."
"What smirk?" I asked, then reached up and felt my face. I was surprised when I realized I was smirking. My mind was still reeling from the Pharaoh's request, and I wasn't exactly paying attention. "Oh, that one…"
Honestly, up until Turak'Kah had said it, I had never thought about the possibility of fusing a splicer and an evo together, even temporarily. My brain was a little fuzzy on how that would work, but the idea did intrigue me.
"He has the same look on your face your mother gets when talking about the ancient legends." Turak'Kahn said, then laughed loudly.
"Legends?" I asked.
"It would probably be best to hear of them from my wife since she is an expert in ancient Egyptian myths and legends." Turak'Kah said, then turned and looked at Jurirai. "Any idea where she could be now Jurirai?"
"Most likely in the library, the head librarian found some ancient texts that he thought the queen would want to look at." Jurirai replied. The Pharaoh clapped his hands together and then stood up.
"Splendid! That will make things easier on me! Follow me, you four!" He said, then headed towards the door.
I glanced at Jane as her father passed and saw an exhausted and annoyed look on her face. When Jurirai passed the group and urged Iris, Jane, Bo, and I to follow, I channeled mana into my telepathic meeting enchanted ring and cast the axiom spell sigil. This linked the girls and I with Bo so we could talk privately.
<There is something I should know about this spell your dad wants me to make?> I asked as we left the throne room.
The guards that were stationed outside the room quickly fell into a formation, preparing to follow the group, but a simple wave of the Pharaoh's hand stilled all of them. I also couldn't help but notice the looks of confusion on all the guards' faces when they saw Bo with his magical harness on keeping him within fifteen feet of me.
<No…it's just my mother is…obsessed for a lack of a better word on this concept of fusing evos and splicers. When her and my father first got married, my grandfather told her of an old legend that was passed down among the Pharaohs about a lost spell. Mom's been obsessed with finding it ever since.> Jane explained.
<I see…> I replied.
<That sounds super cool, though! Fusing with a Gadget or Gargesh or even Midnight.> Bo piped up.
<Yeah it sounds like an amazing story, but it's just that, a story.> Jane said, then sighed aloud. <It's impossible! There is no way that anyone could safely fuse with an evo and then revert back to their original form!>
<Jane, I'm pretty sure the word impossible has kinda lost all meaning when Chase is involved in something. How many times has he beaten the odds and found one of his work arounds?> Iris spoke up. Jane groaned, then shook her head.
<We can't keep relying on Chase's dumb luck sooner or later we're going to meet a challenge that his work arounds aren't going to work on.> She said sternly. I arched a brow and then glanced at Jane.
<You and your mom don't get along well, I'm guessing.> I said. Jane scowled at me.
<That is none of your business!> She snapped.
<So that's a yes…> Bo quipped earning a glare from Jane.
"Now you know it's rude to have a private conversation around company My little Bug." Turak'Kahn said, glancing over his shoulder at Jane, then glanced at me. "That spell you cast inside the throne room would have happened to be one that allows you all to communicate telepathically, would it?"
"And here I thought I was being stealthy…." I said with a smirk. Turak'Kahn returned my smirk and turned down another hallway.
"While I will admit that your spells are surprisingly silent when cast from your enchanted item, your spell sigils still give off light, which can be a big giveaway." Turak'Kahn replied. "I'm guessing my daughter was telling about how my wife is obsessed with finding this spell and how it's just a silly old tale?"
"Wow he's spot on!" Bo exclaimed then turned to me. "You didn't accidently add him into the link did you Chase?"
"No he didn't, I just know my daughter." Turak'Kahn said. Jane blushed deeply as she looked away from everyone. "While she's not obsessed, she is very determined to find this spell."
"Might I ask why?" I asked.
"Ask her that when you meet her. You'll understand after you've talk with her about evos for any length of time." Turak'Kahn said.
While our conversations had been going on the Pharaoh has been leading us through the various palace halls. We were now heading down a long hallway with a set of old looking stone doors at the end of it. There were four guards standing watch in front of the doors that instantly became alert when they saw the Pharaoh.
The two guards on each side grabbed the stone handles on the doors and pulled them open. The doors creaked and scrapped against the sandstone floor as they were pulled open. I was impressed that it only took two guards to open each door. They looked like they weighed a ton.
As we walked into the library my eyes grew to the size of saucers and my mouth dropped to the floor. The royal library looked grander then the libraries back at Andromeda. There were nearly endless rows of bookshelves that stretch up so high I couldn't see the ceiling. Dozens of librarians rished about documenting tomes and books, scrolls and stone tablets. Small evos fluttered about helping the staff carry or reaching tomes too high for them.
On closer inspection I realized that the small evos were actually fey-fey. A combination of Chipmunk and butterfly that techno-splicing factories back in the states use in order to deliver messages and act as a cheap security system. They were easily trained and women loved to keep them as pets so they were often sold as pets.
On hearing the doors seeing the Pharaoh walk into the library all the librarians near the door froze and looked like deer staring at head lamps for several seconds before one turned and shouted further into the library.
"AKAZEEM! HIS MAJESTY IS HERE!" He yelled. Everyone was silent as they waited for a reply, which came in the form of a young man running at full speed towards us. He skidded to a stop in front of the Pharaoh and nearly fell over resulting in the Pharoah needing to grab him before he fell over. He quickly stood up straight and bowed before him.
"Your majesty! I didn't know you were coming…" He finally noticed that there were more people near by then just the Pharaoh and hos eyes bulged. "…and with guests! Your highness! Always a pleasure!."
"Akazeem." Jane replied casually.
"Is my wife here still Akazeem?" Turak'Kahn asked. Akazeem nodded enthusiastically.
"Yes she's just this way!' Akazeem motioned for everyone to follow as he started further into the library. We did as he beckoned and he continued to talk as he walked. "Her majesty is examining a tablet that was found just this morning. A really fascinating find, unlike anything I've seen in the library."
"What's so fascinating about it?" Turak'Kahn asked.
"Well for one the whole tablet seems to be made out of some kind of crystal, I'm no geologist so I couldn't tell you what kind for sure but it's not diamond or quarts, Queen Viola was certain of that." Akazeem replied.
"Is there anything written on it that would warrant such study from my wife?" Turak'Kahn asked.
"Not sure. The tablet is covered in markings but…it's written in a language I've never seen before and can't for the life of me decipher." Akazeem replied then pointed to a corner coming up ahead. "Her majesty will be able to tell you more, She's just around the corner."
We turned the corner and the narrow aisle that we were walking down opened up into a large reading and study area. Complete with stone tables and chairs. Seated at the center most table was a woman that looked like she could have been Jane's twin. Standing beside her was a woman that looked like a slightly older version of Iris.
'Jane and Iris moms I guess…' I thought.
"Your majesty! Look who came to visit you!" Akazeem exclaimed happily. Jane's mom looked up from the table she was staring at and turned to look at all of us. Her eyes lit up when she saw Turak'Kahn and she jumped up from her seat and rushed over.
"Turry! Come qui-!" She exclaimed, her sentence cut short when she tripped over the dress she was wearing and fell flat on her face. Iris, Bo, and I winced as we saw her face plant while Jane simply groaned and covered her face. Turak'Kahn rushed over and helped his wife up.
"Vi, darling, how many times have I told you to be careful when you walk. My dear you could trip on air." Turak'Kahn said in a sweet voice while he helped her to her feet.
Viola groaned and rubbed her nose, a look of panic spread across her face when she noticed something wrong but that panic quickly subsided when Turak'Kahn placed a pair of gold and black glasses on the bridge of her nose.
"Thank you Turry." Viola said then brushed herself off. "Sorry I got too excited again. But you won't believe what I've found!"
"Well you won't believe what I found…" Turak'Kahn said then motioned towards Jane, Iris, Bo and I. Viola's eyes locked on Jane and a broad smile spread across her face.
"Janey!" She exclaimed then rushed over and hugged her daughter. Jane tensed up as her mother snuggled her and Bo and I struggled it hold in out laughter at Jane's obvious embarrassment.
Viola let go of Jane and took a step back to look at her. A sad smile tugged at her lips.
"You've grown since I last saw you. You look so much like your grandmother now." Viola said.
"Mother!" Jane said, blushing and looked away from everyone.
"I took the liberty of inviting her, Iris, and a few of their classmates back home a little earlier than planned." Turak'Kahn said motioning to us. Viola finally noticed Iris, Bo and I and beamed with happiness.
"Iris! My goodness you've grown! Ultia hasn't she grown?!" Viola exclaimed then glanced back at her guardian who was watching at a respectable distance. Ultia, Iris mom, nodded and smiled.
"She looks more worldly than when she left." Ultia replied, looking Iris up and down. Her eyes then fell to Bo and I. Her eyebrows arched a little at the sight of Bo's harness.
"Who are these two?"
"Chase Kingston and a classmate of theirs…umm…what was your name again?" Jurirai asked Bo.
"I'm Bo Kestrel!" He exclaimed proudly and stuck out his chest.
"Oh yes, Bo Kestrel." Jurirai said with a nod.
"Chase Kingston….oh! You're that American splicer I've been hearing another about lately." Viola said then tapped a finger against her lip. "I think it was at dinner at my father's last month, a bunch of noblemen were cursing your name for something unimportant."
"Probably because I denied their request for a enchanted item or they pissed me off so I banned them." I said. Viola snapped her finger and nodded in agreement.
"That's right!"
"My dear, the tablet you wanted to show me." Turak'Kahn said softly into Viola's ear. Her eyes widened and she quickly spun on her heel and grabbed Turak'Kahn by his arm and dragged him over to the table.
"Oh yes! Turry you have to see this! It's amazing! Beyond anything I've seen before!" She exclaimed.
<I haven't seen your mother this excited in a while.> Iris said over the mental link.
<I know…it's annoying….> Jane grumbled in response.
<She's kinda chaotic and scatter brained….I like her!> I exclaimed.
<You would…> Jane groaned then walked over to the table that her parents were not crowding around. Iris, Bo and I followed suit while Jurirai and Ultia stayed back a respectable distance.
When we reached the table my eyes widened in surprise at the table that the Pharaoh and queen were looking at. It was made of a solid crystal like Akazeem had said, however it was completely see-through save the spots on the crystal that were covered in markings. On closer inspection I realized those marking were actually words written in Torapos. They were carved into the crystal and then highlighted with a sort of black ink.
"See! I've never seen anything like it! Can you believe that it was found in the section on old Egyptian myths?" Viola commented while she ran her hand over the tablet. "I know I've seen these markings before but I can't for the life of me remember where."
"Hear unto all, the story and blessings of King Ramus Azushal, first of his line. The first and only Star born king…" I read aloud as I looked at the tablet. All eyes shot to me as I started speaking.
"Wait you can read that?!" Viola asked.
"Yeah, it's written in Torapos. A really old dialect of Torapos but I can still understand it." I replied. Turak'Kahn's brows shot up as did Viola's.
"You can read Torapos? The language of the mythical Tolapo village!" She exclaimed. I nodded then glanced back at the tablet.
"Yeah, but the village isn't mythical, my grandmother was born in it and left when she was young. She taught me how to read and speak Torapos." I said. Viola's eyes lit up as she looked at me and quickly rushed to my side.
"Please! Tell me what it says!" She said pointing to the tablet.
"Lets see…first and only Star born king. Sing praise onto the blood of the ancients that flows within him. For he, anointed by the blessed Star, has brought peace to a kingdom besieged by the curse of Set. For he now lives as a martyr protecting our noble kingdom from the wickedness that tore it asunder, forever and always." I said reading aloud to everyone then looking at the group. "That mean anything to anyone."
"Yes…" Turak'Kahn said and scratched his chin. "But Ramus Azushal is a myth. A former Pharaoh that was a star farm crystal bearer."
Iris, Bo and Jane all arched a brow at that bit of news, however I was more occupied with the script at the bottom of the tablet. I was written in a different language than the rest. It took me a moment for me to realize it was the runic language, however the runes were more advanced than anything I've ever seen before.
"Runes…" I muttered as I traced one with my finger.
The second I touched it I felt the mana in my body being sucked into the tablet. Before I could gasp or make any sound the tablet glowed and a massive axiom spell sigil formed a few feet above everyone's heads. A second smaller spell sigil formed in above the first, followed by a third above the second.
"CHASE! WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Iris and Jane bellowed.
"Nothing I just touched it!" I exclaimed.
"Fascinating…" Viola gasped.
The three sigils fired a purple beam of energy that ripped a hole in the air similar to a black hole. Doing so sent a shockwave of mana that destroyed the spell that tied Bo and I together.
Four beams shot out of the space tear and struck Turak'Kahn, Viola, Jane, and I. It dodn't hurt however I felt myself being pulled towards the space tear. I looked down and realized that my hands and feet were turning into dust and being pulled into the space tear. The same was going on with the Pharaoh, Queen, and Jane.
"CHASE WHAT IS GOING ON!" Jane bellowed.
"FUCK IF I KNOW!" I bellowed back.
"CHASE I AM GOING TO KILL YOU! STOP TOUCHING OLD SHIT!" Iris snapped.
"Your majesty!" Jurirai called out helplessly.
"Jurirai! It won't be long until we all disappear! Summon all the court splicers that are experts on ancient magic and see if they can't find a way to reverse it! If nothing else keep Leon safe!" Turak'Kahn ordered.
"Right away my King!" Jurirai replied then raced put of the library with the speed of a cheetah, Ultia right on his tail.
In a matter of moments the royal family and I were reduced to nothing but floating heads as the rest of our bodies were sucked into the space tear. The od thing was I could still feel my body even though it was gone. I was flexing my fingers and feeling my calms curl somewhere.
"Chase! I'm sorry I was so hard headed and evil to you…!" Jane started but I quickly interrupted.
"Jane no! I am not dealing with you raising all these death flags! Someone always dies when people start passing around apologies on comic books!" I snapped tjen flashed her a cocky smile. "We're going to be fine! I promise."
Jane calmed down on hearing that and took a deep breath before turning to look at Iris who was panicking.
"Chase has this! Help your dad figure this out. We'll be ba…"
Jane was cut off as her mouth vanishes into the space tear. I closed my eyes and prepared for the worst. While nothing really hurt my body was somewjere else that my head was about to join.
'Loki, Thor, Anasazi, please don't let this be a room filled with spiders…I know that probably sound insulting to the God of stories and father of spiders but your children are terrifying and I don't want to shit myself in front of a Pharaoh!' I prayed.
For a spit second I swore tike stood still and I heard amuzed laughter echoing around me but as soon as I heard it the sound was gone with only a vague whisper echoing in my mind.
'…Funny little star…'
Sho'lajah Artifact Company Conceptual Archive: Smol Atrocity, (Pt. 2 of ?) As is common with evos made with raven as a base, Chase believes that Smol Atrocity will be a pack evo and as such will not be able to survive without a pack, murder, or pride. With a large group of Smol Atrocities, they can act as a surveillance system or be trained to work in unison for stealth and assaination jobs. This is, of course, all speculation as the smol atrocity is still in the concept stage.
