"What?" They both asked.
I walked over and placed my hand on Haws' remaining arm and smiled as I channeled mana into his body and used it to scan his genetic structure. It only took me a few moments to record it onto a lysdale script and then take the sequences for his left and invert it to create a new right arm for him.
Haws looked even more confused as I channeled flesh attribute mana into his body and sent the mana to his right shoulder. His shirt stretched and bulged around the shoulder, and Haws started to look panic.
"Calm down, don't freak out. This will be over in a few moments." I said as a small bit of blood stained his shirt sleeve as the original wound opened up and bone and ligaments started to sprout from the wound.
The odd mesh of bones and tissue hanged limply from Haws shoulder in the vague shape of an arm as muscle covered the bones. The muscles twitched and flexed as nerves were grown into the muscle fibers and connected to Haws' nervous system. After a few more moments, skin covered the muscles and bone, fingernails grew from the now fully formed nail bed, and thick mats of arm hair covered the new baby soft skin.
I was finished regenerating the arm but continued to channel mana and remember the genetic sequence that I knew would be helpful for Haws. I quickly found Haws sequence for his appendix and broke it apart, then added genes to mutate it. Once that was done, I added channels throughout his body, about a trillion of them throughout his body and close to the skin. As one last thing, I added a large bone spike in each of his arms they were the length of his forearms and attached muscles and made an opening just behind the wrist. Now fully done, I took my hand off Haws and smiled.
"Done." I said proudly. Haws held his newly regenerated and improved arm up to their and gasped.
"It's back…you grew my arm back?!" He gasped. A smile tugged on his lip as he moved his arm around and flexed his arm and biceps. He suddenly pulled me into a tight hug and lifted me into the air. "YOU GREW MY FUCKING ARM BACK! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!"
"Haws….can't….breathe!" I wheezed. He let me go and laughed heartily as he walked over to a nearby desk and picked up stuff off the desk. "That's not all I did. You might be a little mad at me for not asking before hand but I changed your appendix and gave you more defensive capabilities. Hold your left hand up and try flexing the muscles around your stomach on that side."
Haws did as I told him. Nothing happened at first and he made a bunch of weird faces to as he tried to flexing those muscles. After a few attempts he flexed the right muscles and arcs of electricity danced between his fingers for a few seconds.
"Oh fuck!" Haws exclaimed then at me and then back at his fingers and flexed those muscles again making electricity dance between for a slightly longer time.
"That's not all I did either. Point your arm out away from everyone and flex your wrists while squeezing your palm." I instructed.
Haws did as I told him, a little more eagerly than before. Almost immediately the bone spike in his forearm popped our and stuck put about a foot and a half from his wrist. Haws laughed almost manically looked at the bone spike. The spike suddenly retracted and then popped again.
"I didn't splicers could do shit like this!!!" Haws exclaimed, happily retractkng the claw again..
"Almost ninety-nine percent of us can't. Body modification is hard and there are so many things that can go wrong. Chase is a natural and a freak of nature so of course he can do it with no problem." Iris said.
"You ready to take on some thrads?" I asked. Haws smirked deviously and popped his spike.
"More than ready." He said.
"Great. Now where are we going?" Iris asked.
[That bastard is on the opposite side of the floor boss! He has a bunch of those other evos with it!] Bone-lasher snarled on queue.
[Thanks Bone.] I said.
"It's on the other side of the level, apparently it has a bunch of thrads with it." I relayed to Iris and Haws. Haws frowned and crossed his arms.
"Still kinda freaky that you are able to see where it is from here." He said.
"Well Bone-lasher is the one that can see it, I'm just sharing his vision." I corrected. Haws nodded in understanding.
"So what's the plan in dealing with it? We going to charge in and try to eliminate it by force or lay in wait?" Haws asked.
"I vote for the lay in wait option. With a bunch of thrads under its control the thradiz can turn a offensive we make against us real quick of there are enough of them. Even with all you and your evos power Chase." Iris spoke up. I nodded in agreement then turned to look at the file on the thradiz.
"There might be more in the file that could help us th…" I started.
The sound of a gun cocking stopped me mid sentence. Bone-lasher's vision immediately focused on the room around us and in a split instant I saw one of the scientist that had been cowering in the other room a second ago standing the hole in the wall with one of the guards that had been knocked out gun. I pushed Iris into Haws and jumped in front of them just as the scientist got a shot off. The bullet struck me in the gut sending a searing pain through my body.
"FUCK YOU! SPLICER PIECE OF SHIT!" The scientist roared.
"CHASE!" Haws roared.
Iris drew the bowie knife that she had hidden in her dress and rushed the scientist before he could get another shot off and stabbed him in the throat. The scientist let out a wet gurgle as Iris yanked out the blade and severed his carotid artery in the process. He fell to the ground and quickly bled out on the floor.
"Chase! Shit! Chase is hit!" Haws yelled at Iris as he rushed to my side. I was now leaning against a desk and holding my gun while trying to keep Haws back from me.
"I'm fine! It'll heal in a second!" I replied quickly and held a hand up. Haws scowled at me and slapped my hand out of the way.
"Don't give me that! You were shot! We gotta hurry up and get you medical attention!" Haws exclaimed and pulled my shirt up to look at the damage.
When he pulled the shirt up the bullet popped put of the bullet wound and landed on the floor. It closed up a second later leaving Haws look at me with a look of shock and envy.
"It's not a splicer thing, it's a Chase thing." Iris said over her shoulder as she checked the other room for hostiles. After a short moment she returned and wiped the knife off.
"See! I told you I was fine." I said, though that was less for Haws benefit and more for my evos. They were all sreaming in my head demanding to be let out so they could tear the scientist that shot me limb from limb. Never-ending the fact he was already dead.
"Chase where are the rest of those techno-dorks?" Iris asked.
"They ran towards the section of the level that the thradiz is on. They probably want to try and use the elevator." I replied after Bone-lasher showed me.
"Well I'm glad you're safe Chase but…" Haws reared back and slapped me on the back of my head. "Don't do that again!"
"OW! SERIOUSLY! I JUST TOOK A BULLET FOR YOU!" I hollered and rubbed the back of my head.
"Yeah and I lost an arm for you." He huffed and crossed his arm.
"I just grew that back for you!" I barked.
"And I'm grateful but you're still a young dumbfuck, you shouldn't be risking your life to save me. It should be the other way round." Haws replied.
"DUMBFUCK!" I bellowed.
Iris laughed which caught me off guard as I turned to look at her. She was laughing loudly and heartily, having to lean against a wall to keep herself upright. I narrowed my eyes at her.
"Gods above, everyone just slaps you for your dumb shit don't they?" She asked then cackled some more.
"Iris remember how you asked me to one day do body modification on you….that's not happening anymore." I said. Iris stopped laughing immediately and scowled at me.
"REALLY?!" Iris snapped. This time Haws laughed then shook his head and clapped me on my back.
"What was that for?!" I growled. Haws simply smiled. The sincerity and openness of it caught me off guard.
"You've really changed…it's good to see, your grandmother would be proud." He said sincerely.
"Oh…um…thanks Haws…" I muttered and looked away from him.
I felt a little happy hearing Haws say that. Out of all the people that knew me in St. Louis only Haws, Louie, Angie, and my grandfather didn't turn on me once the ascended was captures. Even when my parents turned on me.
"HELP!" A voice bellowed.
"Is it…?" Iris asked. I shared my vision with Bone-lasher and quickly found where the scream had come from. It was near the elevator shaft that I had frozen over. The small group of scientists were being chased by a pack of escaped thrads. They weren't part of the main pack that followed the thradiz it seemed they escaped from another part of the level and were just exploring.
"Yeah. Those scientist from earlier…" I replied and headed out of the small office. I channeled mana into the void pocket enchanted ring and cast the spell then reached into the pocket and pulled out one of the Thompson Mk.4S and tossed it to Haws. He caught it in mid-air and gasped when he got some good look at it.
"A THOMPSON MK-FUCKING-4S! WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET ONE OF THESE?!" Haws bellowed.
"I stole it from some gangsters, lets go!" I exclaimed then tossed Iris the mana-lock as I passed her.
"I'm not using that!" She called out then chased after me.
Iris, Haws and I made it out into the main hallway and ran towards the elevator, it only took us a few moments to see the group of scientists running towards us. Iris and I skidded to a stop while Haws took a few steps past us and aimed the Thompson at the thrads. They were quickly gaining on the scientists, snapping their jaws and clawing at the air trying to get ahold of the scientists lab coats.
"HIT THE DECK!" Haws ordered.
The scientists dropped immediately and covered their heads as Haws fired the Thompson Mk.4S. The sound of fully Automatic gunfire filled the hallway, the thrads let out ear piercing screamed as they were quickly mowed down by Haws. Haws however kept firing even after All the thrads were dead.
"Haws! Haws! HAAAAAAWS!" I screamed over the gunfire. Haws finally stopped firing though that was cause he ran out of ammo. He smiled broadly and look back at Iris and I.
"I think I found true love." Haws said. Iris rolled her eyes and sighed.
"Americans and guns…" She sighed.
"Well they're definitely dead." I said then walked over to look at the corpses.
I stepped over the cowering scientists and frowned as I neared the thrads. These were different than the ones than the ones that we'd seen so far. It looked just as reptilian as all of the others with just hints of ape and human features, where they differed was their scales were black and had multiple spikes on the shoulders that were tipped with red. I turned to look at the scientists and kicked the closest one's foot.
"Hey, what's up with these thrads?" I asked them. The scientists all looked back and me and scowled.
"As if we'd tell you splicer scum!" One of the scientists snapped.
"Seriously? We just saved your lives! You cannot seriously be that bigoted!" Iris snapped.
"Yeah they can." Haws said then held his hand out to me. "Hey Chase, you have another magazine?"
"Yeah…" I said then opened the void pocket again and then pulled out a few magazines from the pocket then tossed them to Haws. As I closed them void pocket I noticed the scientists all staring at me in astonishment.
"How…how did you do that?!" One asked.
"As if I'd tell you normie assholes…" I said mockingly. I turned back and looked at the thrads then smiled. "…though you should be more helpful considering there are plenty more of these thrads on this level as well as that thradiz flying around."
The scientists all looked at each other nervously. All the bravado that they had drained from them as they remembered. I wouldn't leave them to the thrads unless they ended up attacking us like their colleague did but they didn't know that.
"They have the DNA of two splicers spliced into them. While the other ones only have DNA from one splicer." One of the scientists explained.
"Where did they get the DNA of two splicers?" Iris asked.
I knelt down and placed my hand on the corpse of one of the thrads and channeled mana into it. My mana quickly read the DNA of the evo. I quickly identified the DNA of the ascended thrad, Silverback gorilla, alligator, and the DNA of two humans, one of them I didn't recognize so I guessed it was KC's the other one I immediately recognized as mine.
"…One is KC's the other is…mine? When the hell…?" I muttered in confusion.
"Fuck! That's the last thing we need! Those thrads aren't transcended are they?" Iris asked. I shook my head.
"No, they're genetic sequences are a lot more stable than I thought they'd be. They have the ascended's DNA in them too." I said.
"Well that's a good thing at least. The last thing we need is a transcended evo that's not under your control." Iris said. Haws scratched his head and frowned.
"Transcended…that's those talking evos of Chase's right?" Haws asked.
"Yeah…it's a Chase thing. I was worried that techno-splicing was another way to make them." Iris said.
"Gotcha…well what's the plan now Chase?" Haws asked.
"We go ahead and kill a thradiz. The longer we wait the more people that can get hurt." I said.
"What about us?" One of the scientists asked.
"Oh, sorry! I didn't think you'd want a filthy splicer's help!" I exclaimed sarcastically. The scientists all looked worried, but I just rolled my eyes and pointed down the hallway we ran down. "Head to one of the production floors and lock the doors. There are some guards that are knocked out further back, wake them up, and they will protect you."
The scientists didn't need any more prompting. They all quickly jumped to their feet and ran down the hall. I watched them leave then looked to Iris and Haws.
"Let's go."
Sorry for the late chapter!
Justice Technologies Archive: Experiment 78224B, Proxil. The combination of skunk, cockatoo, and oscolot. The proxil was created by accident due to a miscommunication with one of the scientists. However, this evo was found to be an infiltration and recon type evo. It has the rare ability to copy the voices of humans to lead them into traps. It's body is mostly covered in hair but it's head is covered in feathers that distort sound...(To be continued)
