For several seconds I floated weightlessly in a sea of black, not unlike how it was when I entered Alpa'nagia's space for the first time. I looked around to try and get a sense of where I was and to see if I could find that evo.
I felt a familiar presence behind me and turned to see Bone-lasher swimming through the darkness towards me and Alpa'nagia slithering close behind him.
"Ssssstar Ssssshaper!" Alpa'nagia hissed happily as he slithered up to me. I was taken aback slightly by the fact that Alpa'nagia and I were somehow the same size inside the mental world of my crystal.
"You guys see the evo anywhere?" I asked.
"No…" Alpa'nagia said looking around.
[Over here.] Bone-lasher replied then swam under me and carried me off in a random direction. Alpa'nagia slithered close as we ventured through the darkness. The deeper we went the more the scenery around us started to change, it was still dark but I could make out shapes and images in the darkness.
Gravity suddenly took over and the three of us landed in damp leaves and thick undergrowth. We all stopped and took a look around, Bone-lasher and Alpa'nagia both sharing their sense with me. We were in the middle of what looked like a massive rainforest with trees about fifteen times the size of normal redwood trees. There was no life besides the trees and random plants that dotted the landscape.
Thanks to Bone-lasher and Alpa'nagia I could see the evo, it was cowering in a small hollowed-out tree trunk about fifteen yards ahead of us. I hopped off Bone-lasher's back and walked over to it. On hearing my footsteps in the wet leaves it let out a warning screech.
"I'm not here to hurt you…" I said softly. The evo had managed to curl itself into a tight ball, resting its head on top of a section of its body. The deep gouges in its body were no longer bleeding but looked to be in a constant state of attempting to close only to be forcefully ripped open.
[Scared…injured…weak.] Bone-lasher said, the sadness in his voice was plain to hear.
"Ssssstar Ssssshaper ssssspeakssss truth." Alpa'nagia added.
I felt a wave of emotions hit me all at once from the evo, anger, fear, and most of all confusion. It didn't know where it was, why it was hurting, what it was, it knew nothing other than it was hurt and scared.
'What the hell do I do now…?' I asked myself. I crouched down and tried to squeeze myself through the log. The evo heard me and lunched in my direction, mandibles outstretched prepared to take a chunk out of me only to come up short and ended them in the wood of the log. It tried to yank itself free but with its legs messed up as they were it didn't have enough traction.
"Now look what you did…" I said softly. The evo screeched loudly and fearfully again, it thrashed willing trying to get free, opening the wounds all over its body worse. "NO! STOP!"
I placed my hand on his head and forced mana into it. The evo stilled instantly and I could feel his emotions and thoughts more clearly. Without taking my hand off the evo's head I used my other to help it work its mandibles free.
[Are you going to kill me?] The evo's voice asked softly in my head.
"No, I'm trying to help you." I replied out loud.
[Why…my creator wanted to end me…?] It asked. I scowled and shook my head.
"Jane was fucking wrong to do that. I can't believe she'd do something so fucking heartless." I grumbled as I managed to get one of the evo's mandibles free.
[Boss is good. Not like other humans] Bone-lasher piped up.
[Why did my creator make me, only to destroy me?] The evo asked.
'This one of pretty intelligent. Pretty self aware. I better be careful with my answers…' I thought.
"I'm not sure…she wanted to test herself." I replied.
[Was I a failure…like the other voice said?] The evo asked.
"No. Jane didn't have the skill to put you together correctly. She failed, not you." I said. I managed to free the other mandible. I kept one hand on its head as I gently placed it back down.
[Why do you want to help me?] It asked.
"Because I know how it feels to be unwanted and looked down on. I know how it feels to hurt and I know how it feels to have the one who created you look at you as a failure…" I replied.
I felt Bone-lasher nudge my butt with his nose and a wave of emotions and memories flood from both him and Alpa'nagia through me to the evo. Every memory they had that involved me was in that wave, every injury and insult, pain and loss they ever felt before they met me was in their too.
"Ssssstar Ssssshaper ssssseesssss usssss! He ssssseessss you. Your pain issss undesssserved, your creation an act of butchery. I know thessse painsss, let the Ssssstar Ssssshaper fix you assssss he once fixed me." Alpa'nagia said.
[Can you fix me? My creator said it was impossible…] The evo said.
"Impossible for her. I'm not her." I said then placed both hands on his head. "Just relax, I promise the pain will fade soon…"
I collected a surge of mana and channeled it through my hands into the evo's body. I felt a surge of information flood my mind and I quickly closed my eyes and started to decipher it. It was the genetic code of the evo, I quickly started recording it in a lysdale script, it didn't take long. There were huge gaps in its genetic structure. Some of the sloppiest work I've ever seen in genetic binding and RNA sequencing. It was a miracle the evo was dead already.
The only saving grace was that since the DNA from the three original sources weren't sequenced correctly I could easily pick out and record the sequenced for the giant centipede, bullet ant and Golden-ringed Dragonfly in lydale script. I had nearly a full sequence for each of the three catalysts. After I was done recording them I simply had to use flesh attribute mana to help me plug in the missing or corrupted sequences.
Although it sounded simple, in practice it was very slow work as I had to make sure I didn't accidently plug in the wrong DNA in the sequence. Thanks to there being so many large gaps in the sequences it gave me a little wiggle room to customize the evo. Jane spliced it with no idea what it was going to be made for.
This lead to no one catalyst being the dominant one in its genes. There were equal parts of all three fighting for dominance and it wreaked havoc on it during creation. I decided to take out a lot of the dragonfly and bullet ant genes, allowing the Giant centipede DNA to be the main base. To make up for the loss of sequences I plugged in the gene I identified being for size in a lot of empty sequences.
As I worked I came to identify a lot of the genes that were common in all three of the catalysts, particularly: the antenna, mandibles, legs, and body segmentation. Acting on a whim I isolated the sequence for the evos carapace and added segments of all three catalysts together to modify the sequence.
The gene sequence took with no sign of rejection, in fact it strengthened the sequences directly before and after it. I repeated the same process for the evo's legs, mandibles, and body segmentation. As I completed each one the entire DNA sequence looked stronger.
As I completed the sequences I identified more and more, eventually finding the sequences that dictated coloring, size of wings, venom production, stingers, visual acuity, eye shape, mental acuity, vocal cords, and the number of legs.
The more I filled in the missing sequences the more I sensed the landscape around shifting and morphing, reacting to the evo's ever-changing mental and physical status. I found it a good sign when I realized that we in larger areas of the forest now.
As I finished modifying and repairing the damaged sequences of the evo I realized that I needed to use some of my own DNA to finish up some of the sequences. As I placed the DNA in gaps started forming in the sequences that I had finished and new sequences popped in on their own. The same thing had happened to Alpa'nagia when I used my DNA to fix the corruption but I wasn't worried since the new sequences didn't seem to do any harm.
Finished I opened my eyes and saw that Bone-lasher, Alpa'nagia and I were no longer on the forest floor but we're high above the ground standing on the head of the evo. It's body had grown to a massive size, whether the cause of the changes I made to its DNA or its change in mental state I didn't know. It's body was now large enough that it had wrapped around the enormous trees at least six times and was stretched out from the tree at least fifteen yards.
"I feel…peace." The evo said softly. Despite its massive size it still had a low and soft voice.
"Itssssss the Ssssstar Ssssshaper. He hasssss that effect on you." Alpa'nagia said.
[BOSS IS STRONGEST! BOSS IS BEST!] Bone-lasher roared proudly.
"You guys…" I said bashful then reached out and petted both of them on the head.
"Thank you… master…" the evo said bashfully.
"You don't have to call me Master, I don't really like that." I said then patted the evk softly on his head. "But speaking of names I'll have to give you one…there is no way I'm letting Jane or Iris gave you after earlier…"
"NEVER! Star boss is my only Boss!" The evo said confidently.
"Star boss…you just mixed Alpa'nagia's name for me and Bone-lasher's…well if you like it…" I said. "…now back to that name…"
"CHASE! CHASE!" Jane's voice boomed loudly throughout the mental landscape.
"CHASE WAKE UP! COME ON!" Iris's panic-stricken voice bellowed.
"How long has he been like this?" Baset's voice broke through this time.
"Let me put a pin in that and put out this dumpster fire…" I said to the evo then closed my eyes and let my mind wander back to my physical body.
Techno-splicing Fact: In order for a scientist to techno-splice a full lysdale script must be created and a vast array of machines are needed in order to create a evo embryo and help it mature to adulthood. The average time for a evo to be created with techno-splicing is two months from creation to full maturation.
