"Your Highness, please do not misunderstand my mother's words," Verina finally spoke. She blinked her tear-filled eyes, which could easily evoke pity from anyone watching her. "In the past, my mother was forced to accept the payment because... because of what happened to my father and because she wanted me to live. We were threatened by the human soldiers, and my mother did not want them to abuse me. Luckily, I had somewhat weak body so..."

"Hmmmm…." Max nodded. "Nevertheless, I am very grateful for what Madam did. I would not have met such an excellent bride if Madam had not chosen to sell her stepdaughter."

Eve's eyes widened at Max's words. This was unexpected, but she was enjoying it!
