The hood shielded her face from the growing chaos outside, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside her.

The moment they stepped out, Roderick gestured toward the railing. A ladder in sight. Elise felt her pulse quicken, her senses on high alert. She couldn't afford to make a mistake now. Not when lives were at stake.
"You're making the right choice, Princess," Roderick said as they descended, his voice low but smooth. "Trust me, this will all be over soon."
