Bab 155: C138

"Tony, you're too impatient!"

Fury's face was calm.

Although there was a huge gap between the current Avengers and the Justice League in terms of combat effectiveness, the calmness he showed at this moment took Tony, Hawkeye, and Natasha by surprise.

In the eyes of Tony and the others, it seemed like he might be holding some unknown trump cards.

"There are things that shouldn't have been revealed at this time."

He paused, his eyes sweeping over the three people in front of him, finally focusing on Tony, and said slowly, "The Avengers, of course, are not just the three of you."

"What do you mean?"

Tony squinted, gradually losing patience with this spy.

Fury picked up the TV remote and turned on the TV in front of them.

Captain America!

It showed the most famous superhero in the United States—Captain America, known as the most old-fashioned hero during the Second World War.

"Captain America, Steve Rogers!"

Tony murmured, his face darkening, and his tone turning cold: "Nick, you don't mean to say that the spiritual leader of the Avengers is the Captain America, who's been dead for seventy years? The spirit of Captain America is with us, so we're not three people, but four? But one of them is a ghost?"

"You're wrong," Fury said lightly.

His words, though spoken casually, were like a bolt from the blue, causing the three of them to freeze in shock.

"Captain America is not dead."

Tony and the others exchanged glances, stunned. They never expected to hear such shocking news from him.

Captain America, Steve Rogers, had died during the final moments of the war, flying the plane with the Hydra leader, Red Skull, and plunging into the polar ice.

This was a well-known fact around the world.

But now, they were being told that Steve Rogers was not dead!

It sounded too fantastic.

"Even if Captain America isn't dead, 70 years later, he's now an old man, nearly a hundred years old..."

Tony quickly regained his composure.

He narrowed his eyes and frowned, his tone turning even more skeptical: "An old man... you still expect him to come to the frontlines like we do, and be the Captain America from seventy years ago?"

"No."

Fury said, "Rogers has been frozen in the Arctic glacier for 70 years. During these years, he has maintained his youth, still the same as when he was frozen. However, Rogers is still in a deep sleep now, and it will take a certain amount of time for him to regain consciousness."

With certainty, he added, "Captain America will be an important member of the Avengers. Trust me, he will not let you down."

Hearing this, Tony was stunned. He paused, digesting the news for a moment. Still, he wasn't ready to let Fury off the hook so easily.

Tony said, "Even so, there is still a big gap between us and the Justice League. Nick, how do you plan to make up for that, or even... let us catch up with the Justice League?"

"I will look for more people worthy of recruiting for the Avengers."

Fury gave Tony a long look and replied, "In addition, we're not much worse than the Justice League, Tony. On this point, maybe Batman can answer your question better."

This sentence obviously hinted at Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, who was fighting for the aliens in the universe.

Since Batman knew about the Kree invasion in the 1990s, he would naturally not ignore the existence of Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers.

Of course, there was no need to tell Tony and the others about this information.

After hearing his explanation, Tony pondered for a moment, then got up to leave. Before he left, he said one last thing:

"I don't have much patience. I hope you can do what you promised."

Boom!

The door closed tightly.

Tony's figure disappeared from their sight.

Fury withdrew his gaze from the door and looked at Natasha.

He commanded, "Natasha, the next member of the Avengers is Dr. Octopus, who is now in prison. I have already discussed this with the relevant departments. As long as you can convince Otto, they will not hinder you."

"Dr. Otto?"

Natasha was stunned, thinking about the "artificial sun experiment" that had happened not long ago, under the Manhattan Bridge, on the banks of the Hudson River.

Since it had happened recently and involved Stark Industries, Otto's sentence had not yet been decided, but he would undoubtedly spend a few years in jail.

Of course, despite this, no one questioned Otto's talent.

Although the artificial sun failed, Otto became Doctor Octopus during that incident. The robotic arm he invented, to some extent, was a success and attracted the attention of many.

It was precisely because of this that the Fury chose to recruit Dr. Octopus to the Avengers. If the other party disagreed, he would go to jail.

He believed Otto would not be foolish.

This was a great opportunity to make up for his past mistakes without having to go to jail—become a highly anticipated superhero!

"By the way, after Otto agrees, remember to go to the New York Police Department. Otto's robotic arm is currently being used as an exhibit and is stored there."

He finished his order and turned to leave.

After this meeting, he had other appointments to attend.

Leaving Natasha and Hawkeye in the room, he went to another location, took out his cell phone, and dialed a number.

This was a call from the U.S. Secretary of Defense, John Keller.

"Nick!"

Secretary of Defense John Keller's tone was cold, and he said solemnly, "I need an explanation."

"Aliens invaded!"

Fury said, "This is all I know."

"You said that the spacecraft flying over New York is a spaceship, and the mech defeated by the superhero is an alien?" Keller grinned furiously. "If you want to say that, I can't explain to other people the cause of Ross's death."

"But this is the truth."

He said, "The facts are already right in front of you. You have to believe it, whether you want to or not. I will make a detailed report on this incident to the World Security Council. If you have other ideas, you can communicate with the World Security Council."

After speaking, he hung up the phone, regardless of the reaction from the other side.

Hoover Dam, internal base.

"Damn it!"

Secretary of Defense John Keller muttered.

But at that moment, his face was not as irritable as it had been on the phone. "The alien invasion..."

The old and gray-haired secretary of Defense took a deep breath and looked at the tall, robot-like figure in front of him, which seemed covered in frost. His face gradually became serious: "Is it finally here? Damn aliens!"

As a high-ranking official of the country, he knew many secrets.

For example, the U.S. government had been concealing the truth from the outside world since the beginning of the last century.

NBE.

Non-biological extraterrestrials!

Such confidential files had always been circulated only among a few high-level government departments. Even the president may not know all of them. They were absolute secrets.

After years of research, Keller knew that the alien in front of him had probably crashed on Earth thousands of years ago.

In 1934, the U.S. government transported this robot-like alien to a secret base inside the Hoover Dam to study the high-tech contained within it.

They named it "NBE-ONE."

That is, non-biological extraterrestrial -1!

"It's the alien that Ross first provoked..."

Keller suppressed his thoughts and recalled the explanation from Fury.

On the surface, he didn't believe it, but deep down, he recognized that the alien named "NBE-ONE" in front of him confirmed that what Fury had said might actually be the truth.

Given Ross's character, he was indeed a hot-tempered, extreme individual who had the courage to provoke aliens.

"What bad luck!"

Keller's face remained calm as he muttered to himself, "However, Ross, your death was not in vain..." He looked at the research subject in front of him. "It's time to speed up!"
