Kael didn't raise his face or act surprised; he just continued to stare into space because even at that very moment, he could feel the girl's heartbeat. It was faint but peaceful, making him realize that she was sleeping. Kael thought about how startled she must have been earlier, but if she hadn't tried to run, maybe he would have controlled the urge to have a taste of her blood. And when he stopped her from running, the sweet scent coming from her ended up making him lose all control, and he found himself sucking the blood from her lips.
