Bechymos and the other troops flew back to the Twisted Thicket. Lin felt that the journey took a lot of time, but the return trip was much faster.
Perhaps it had something to do with the illusion.
The Bechymos could not enter the Twisted Thicket and had to stop at the edge of the desert. Just like how she used the Cutters to cut the moss, Lin also used them to 'unload' the moss. They transported large amounts of moss out of the Bechymos' body and cooperated with Lin's other troops to plant the moss on the scorched forest.
The area was covered with a layer of gravel, but it was not too thick and could be easily swept away.
In order to plant the moss, Lin formed a new troop called the 'Waters'. They were beetle-like and could store large amounts of water and sprinkle it out, making the dry ground suitable for growing moss.
However, almost all the water came from the only river that had become narrow. Lin was worried that there was a problem with the water source, so she sent some troops upstream to find out where the water source came from.
The brain worm laid by the side of the river, watching Lin's troops planting moss under the starlight across the river. It had a few questions in its mind.
"Desert, south, rocks, moss?"
The Overmind's words puzzled Lin. It seemed to be referring to the south of the desert, where there was moss on the rocks. The moss did indeed grow on the rocks of the Forest of Spires. In other words, the Overmind knew that the moss came from the Forest of Spires.
Was the Overmind a member of the Aztec tribe? However, it was not afraid of the light, and appeared to be very happy with Lin's act of planting moss.
Obviously, the Overmind valued the changes in the environment. But what Lin was more concerned about was – where did it come from? What kind of creatures did it belong to?
Although the Overmind had a large brain, Lin did not feel that it was much smarter than other creatures. Although it had a lot of vocabulary and seemed to know a lot of things, if one were to calculate based on its brain capacity … It only needed 2% of its body's brain capacity to understand these things. So what was the use of such a large brain?
There were still many questions to be investigated … …
The work here proceeded smoothly. At present, Lin was mainly paying attention to the Aztec tribe's route.
The large Aztec tribe was advancing towards the desert in the northwest direction. Where were they going? Lin's Infiltrators were not suited for moving across the desert, so she was now using a Flyer to follow them.
The following flyers were left behind by Bechymos before he left the Forest of Spires. There wasn't just one of them, but more than ten of them. Three of them were used to follow the Aztec worms, while the rest were used to explore their path.
The desert was cool in the dark. Under the starlight, one could see the surrounding environment clearly. The exploratory flyer flew for a long time. They didn't see any living creatures or objects other than sand. Furthermore, the large Aztec worms moved relatively slowly and wouldn't take long. Soon, it would be daytime. Lin was curious about where they would hide during the day. Under the sand?
The Flyer followed the Aztec army through the night, and when the sun was about to rise, Reen found them standing still in a circle.
At the same time, the small insects on Dumb Insect's back began to squeak. The sand beneath their feet began to shake as if something huge was about to emerge.
Could it be that there were other types of large Aztec worms?
However, it wasn't what Lin had imagined. Following the quaking, the sand in the center of the circle formed by the Aztec worms began to sink down. Slowly, a cavern with a diameter of about two meters slowly appeared, just enough for the large Aztec worms to pass through.
All of them burrowed into the cavern. Soon after, the cavern began to close up and sink into the sand. Seeing this, Lin immediately ordered the Flyer to rush in before the cavern retracted back into the sand.
At present, the cavern was completely sealed up and the environment inside was pitch black. However, the Flyer could smell a considerable amount of Aztec worms.
What was this place? A cavern? Inside the body of a living creature? Lin could sense the quaking of the surroundings, as though something was moving. Did this mean that there was a massive creature hiding under the desert and transporting Aztec worms?
That was truly unique …
Lin couldn't allow the Flyer to glow, or else she would be discovered. She could only stay here for the time being. The cavern should open up again, and when that time comes, she would see where the creature would go.
This seemed to be a long process. The creature wasn't moving very quickly under the sand, so Lin turned her attention back to the Twisted Thicket.
While planting moss was progressing smoothly, Lin's main concern was the water source.
A special unit was moving upstream along the river. Lin had previously thought of checking out the source of the river, but now that there was a problem, she finally decided to investigate.
Although Lin believed that the weakening of the river was related to the sand blowing in, there was also a possibility that there was a problem upstream.
This unit was called a 'Speeder'. It was a unit that could run at high speed through the forest, quickly passing through all kinds of obstacles. Lin noticed that the further upstream she went, the wider and more crooked the river became. It no longer served as the boundary line of the Twisted Thicket, but instead curved into the depths of the forest.
The Speeder followed the river into the forest and went all the way deeper. After running for a while, Lin felt that the terrain here seemed to be getting higher and higher. However, due to the Twisted Thicket, it was hard to see any obvious changes.
The Speeder had been running along the river for more than a day, but Lin hadn't ventured this deep into the forest. Although she had the Flyer fly deeper into the forest before, the Flyer wasn't as fast as the Speeder. Furthermore, they were flying above the forest, so they couldn't see what was inside.
In the depths of the Twisted Thicket, there were many strange creatures that Lin had never seen before. Most of them were strange-looking and gigantic arthropods, but occasionally, there were also smaller reptiles.
This forest was quite rich, and right in front of her, Lin suddenly discovered something even more wondrous.
A strange phenomenon was occurring in the river not too far away. A large wall-like tree blocked Lin's vision. This didn't seem to be a Twisted Tree, but rather another type of gigantic tree. And here, the river flowed down from the top of this gigantic tree.
