The crescent moon hung in the dark sky as countless stars danced in its light. Smoke rose into the sky from the small town on the border of the Land of Fire, where ruins filled the cracked ground. This town had recently experienced a fierce ninja battle, and the death toll remained unknown.
Naoto Uchiha strode through the desolate streets like a calm and composed figure. The surrounding scenery resembled a cemetery, and he traversed the small town like a spirit emerging from the grave.
In reality, the description of him as a ghost was fitting as he had recently been buried under rubble as a lifeless corpse. Naoto Uchiha was now standing again because his body no longer housed its original soul.
It took some time for him to regain his composure, and upon realizing the situation, he calmly assessed his options.
"I seem to have traveled to Naruto's world," he contemplated as he located a half-collapsed wall to rest against. Though he felt pain throughout his body, he maintained his composure and sat down to rest.
For some inexplicable reason, he had arrived in this world and assumed the body of Naoto Uchiha, who had been on the brink of death.
"But... the system?" he mused, methodically organizing the information about the system in his mind. In simple terms, it involved accumulating reputation points, which he could use to acquire the abilities of characters from different worlds.
Despite its simplicity, the system lacked sophistication compared to those in other novels and did not require missions. The character cards in the system were classified into five levels, namely S, A, B, C, and D, with higher-level cards requiring more reputation points.
With 4396 reputation points, Naoto was proud of his this body host prior achievements as a Chūnin from the Uchiha clan. His ability to use the Sharingan was quite impressive for his rank, and he was well-known among many people.
"Fortunate, the lowest-level D-rank character card requires 1,000 points to exchange…"
Naoto knew that while the system could exchange character cards, it couldn't create a person out of thin air. However, he could use a dead body as the card's host, and he looked over the pile of corpses in the ruined town.
After a quarter of an hour of rest, Naoto forced his body to stand up and made his way to the corpses. He sealed them within a scroll.
The strength of the character card depended on its level, but the attached body was also crucial. Luckily, there had just been a big battle, and only two Jōnin had died. It would be a waste not to make use of their bodies.
When ninjas died, they usually destroyed their own brain nerves in some way to prevent information leakage. However, it had no effect on the system's clones.
Without hesitation, Naoto exchanged 1,000 points for a D-rank character card.
[D-rank card – Hiei]
The card depicted a short boy dressed in black, about 1.6 meters tall, but most notably, he had a third eye on his forehead.
Naoto was shocked to see Hiei. He hadn't expected that his first character card would be from the YuYu Hakusho world!
In Naoto's opinion, Hiei had achieved what no one else had accomplished. He had mastered the darkness technique by consuming it and used it to defeat Bui, destroying half of the stadium in the Dark Tournament. Not to mention when he summoned the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which many believed to be impossible. Hiei's strength was truly terrifying.
Naoto retrieved the corpse of the dead Jōnin from among the ruins of the village and used his card to insert the character inside the body. Gradually, the corpse's body started to change until it completely transformed into the character on the card.
Calmly and confidently, Naoto controlled Hiei to stand up.
Naoto observed the two bodies under his control, his mind processing the experience he had never encountered before. He maintained authority over the main body, Uchiha Naoto, and the other body, Hiei's clone, existed simultaneously without interfering with each other.
"It is imperative that I return to Konoha promptly. Undoubtedly, a squad of capable ninjas will soon arrive to cleanse the battlefield. After all, it has only been a short while since the war's cessation," Naoto analyzed, his tone crisp and analytical.
Had he been unaccompanied, he would not have dared to tread carelessly through the battlefield. However, with Hiei's clone, he had no such concerns. From the information he had gleaned, it was evident that Hiei possessed the power of at least a Jonin.
It was the forty-eighth year since Konoha's establishment, and the Third Ninja War was drawing to a close. Naoto recollected, "The end of the war is fast approaching. Hence, I can now return to Konoha to recuperate from my injuries."
As he was about to depart, he halted abruptly. "No," he mused, frowning deeply. "My current injuries are severe. It would be difficult to justify how an exhausted and grievously wounded Chunin could safely traverse the raging battlefield and reach the stronghold."
"Ah, I remember now. The head of the Uchiha clan, Fugaku, is stationed at the defense line five kilometers from here," Naoto recalled. The Third Ninja World War had reached its climax, and after the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, Iwagakure's shinobi could no longer sustain the war effort against Konoha.
The allied forces of Konoha aimed to exploit this opportunity to launch a decisive offensive and oust Kumogakure's shinobi completely. Even Uchiha Fugaku, to gather combat strength, had rushed to the front lines and was presently stationed in a small town not far from Naoto's location.
"It has been a considerable period since the cessation of hostilities in this region. If the information has been effectively disseminated, then the Konoha ninjas should arrive soon," analyzed Naoto, his tone composed and contemplative.
To a ninja, traversing a distance of five kilometers was hardly a substantial feat.
"Have other locations also been targeted?" Naoto inquired, seeking to gather more information.
"No, I do not believe so. It is clear to anyone that the war is drawing to a close. Why, then, would Kumogakure continue to allocate a significant number of troops?" Naoto reasoned. It was likely that Kumogakure had acknowledged the imminent truce and that this attack was a last-ditch effort. The town where Naoto currently resided was likely to be bait, and the true intention was to ensnare any ninjas who came to aid!
For a ninja, Jonin-level combat power was of utmost importance. If they could eliminate a few Jonins, it would provide a considerable tactical advantage.
"But regardless, I must proceed and discern what I can do," Naoto asserted firmly.
As Hiei's clone gazed skyward, a glint of icy determination gleamed in his eyes. He was eager to put his strength to the test.
