Chapter 22
STEVE
The abrupt knock on my door caught my attention, disturbing my quiet sleep. The knock didn't stop, and it continued until I answered.
"Can you hold on a second? I'm just waking up," I growled, climbing down from the bed. I hurried to the mirror and gazed at my reflection in the mirror and I instantly arranged my messy hair before opening the door.
"Susan," I said, "What are you doing here so early?" I asked.
"Will you let me come in first before asking me questions here and there?" Susan asked, pushing Steve aside. She walked into the room, and Steve gently slammed the door behind her.
"What are you doing here?" I asked again as she looked around my room.
"Don't tell me that you're seriously going to save Selene," Susan said as she sat on the bed, sweeping her gaze across the room
"What else can I do to get my mate back? Patiently wait for her to come back? No, I won't do that," I said, standing right in front of her.
"But you know that you're endangering your life if you go to fight Devon," Susan asked, but I scoffed and found her unreasonable
"I won't be fighting him, I'll only reason with him," I said, stating my only strategy
"What? Reason with him?" Susan asked, looking stunned.
"Yes, is there anything wrong with that?" I asked with a slight frown on his face. I was displeased because of the way Susan said her words. "What you're saying is that you don't have faith in me?" I asked.
"It's not about that! Devon is not like every other person that we think we know..."
"I don't care about that bullshit, Susan, and I honestly think that you should mind your business. Don't meddle in my business," I said sternly, but Susan only laughed, and I couldn't comprehend what she found so amusing.
"You're joking, right? Tell me you're joking," Susan said after she got no amusing response from me. The smile on her face slowly vanished and she pushed into my chest.
I didn't flinch. Her strength was no match for my strength. She was just a female Alpha.
"I'm not joking, I'm going to bring my mate back," I uttered
"What do you find in Selene, Steve? I'm a female Alpha like her and it's not like she's more beautiful than me" Susan continued sounding completely unreasonable to me "We ought to be rejoicing and jubilating but here we are talking about reasons why you shouldn't bring Selene back home, I don't need to talk to you about this..."
"Then don't" I cut her off in anger. I was already tired of her ranting. "I won't talk to you about it if you choose not to leave," Susan said sternly
"I honestly can't believe that this is the reason why you disturbed my sleep this early morning," I uttered, walking away from her
"Isn't it enough reason to disturb you, this is a matter of life and death and you can't die all because of Selene," Susan continued "Come to think of it, if you die because of her, she'll continue living her life with no troubles while you'll be six feet"
"Shut your mouth, Susan, I'm more than disappointed in you because you don't have faith in me," I said in a rage, causing Susan to gingerly hold my hand with a sly smile on her face
"It's not about faith, but what if you bring her back? What becomes of me?" Susan asked, causing me to scoff instantly at her words.
"We?" I asked and furrowed my eyebrow
"Yes! We." Susan repeated
"There's nothing like 'we' Susan, yes I know we had a little thing together but that was nothing, wasn't it friends with benefits," I said and before I knew it, I felt a slap on my cheeks and before I could respond to her, the knock on my door caught my attention causing to groan in displeasure
Susan's gaze instantly swept through the room as she sorted for a place to hide. She immediately ran under the bed and I took my shirt that was on the bed, and I swiftly put it on before opening the door for the guards
"Good morning, sir," the guard greeted and bowed slightly in respect.
"Is anything the matter?" I nonchalantly asked.
"The king requests your present in the throne room," He said
"Is that all?" I asked.
"Yes sir," He said before leaving
I slammed the door and Susan instantly hurried out of the bottom of the bed with a frown on his face
"What the hell Steve, dozens of condom packs are under your bed," she abruptly said, but I didn't respond
She took one last glance at me and hissed before exiting the room. I narrowest my eyes and moved over to stand facing my vanity. I gazed at my reflection in the mirror and combed my hair properly before exiting the room, making my way towards the throne room.
The big door of the throne room was pushed open by the guards standing in front of it and I briskly walked toward the king before bowing my head in respect
"Long live my Alpha," I said
"How are you, my dear child?" He asked.
"I'm fine Alpha," I responded
"Terrible news got to me today about a certain wolf that goes by the name Zayne." The Alpha paused. The name rang in my ear thousands of times before I gulped down the saliva in my mouth and asked,
"Want about her Alpha"
"Her body was found in the woods. She committed suicide," The Alpha informed me, and my heart jumped out of my mouth.
"Was it because of me? Oh my goodness, doesn't she have a good life? Why would she choose to end her life" I thought, feeling uncomfortable.
"Where in the woods was she found, my alpha?" I asked while lowering my gaze.
"Deep in the woods, she hanged herself on a tree"
DEVON
I instantly stood to my feet and matched towards the dark dungeons. "who was he?" I asked with a frown on my face, but she didn't reply to me.
"Who came here???" I yelled and opened the prison door with just a snap of my finger
"Who are you talking about?" She stuttered, standing to her feet. I could see the fear in her eyes. I had no choice but to put her under my control and the only way to do that was the make her fear me.
"Don't lie to me Selene, don't dare lie to me because if I find out...." I paused and took a few steps closer to her, reducing my voice. I continued, "You'll definitely not like what I'll do"
Selene stepped backward, causing me to stop. I didn't want to frighten her too much. "No one was here," she stuttered. I tried to sniff the surrounding air to see if I could perceive someone else's scent, but I couldn't
I hurried out of the room, leaving the door open and I heard her footsteps following me, but I didn't bother to look back
I hurried to the throne room in anger and yelled, "How could you lie to me?"
"Sir, I didn't lie. I was sure of what I heard. The voice sounded like your...."
"No one came to the cell. I was the only one there." I heard Selene's voice from behind me.
"but...." The guard tried to defend himself but he stopped and gazed down, falling on his knees
"I'm sorry sir, I'm so sorry, I must have misheard," He started begging.
SELENE
Not only me, but everyone in the room was staring at Devon and the guard. I didn't know what would happen to the guard, but I was hell-bent on protecting my life rather than caring about someone else.
I stared at everyone in the room. Princesses and princes of the kingdom of hell were all present in the room and no one said a single thing in the room
Only Devon's voice was heard in the room. The room became pin-drop silent. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come to you if I wasn't sure" He begged and I lowered my gaze, he was right about what he saw and I lied about it, making him look like a fool but all that didn't matter, all that mattered was the fact that I was alive because I knew that Devon could take my life by just snapping his finger.
"Then you shouldn't have come to me," Devon said raising the guard from the ground, I turned to see the look on everyone's faces but they seemed relaxed and I decided to feel relaxed too because it seemed like Devon would let the guard go but before I could blink, in the next second, Devon ripped out his throat from his body causing me to gasp and move backward. "Ah..." I didn't know what to say. I put my hand over my mouth and staggered back. I turned to look at everyone, but they still seemed relaxed, like nothing was wrong.
Devon sucked his soul out of his body and I instantly felt weak in my knees
He just killed the guard, and it all happened because of me
DEVON
After I killed the guard, I turned to face Selene, I noticed that she was weak and then I ordered, "Take her back to the cell!" I ordered.
"No, no, no, let me go please, please" Selene begged, but u paid a deaf ear to her pleas. I walked away from the hall, making my way back to my room.
I creaked open the door of my room as I closed my eyes, feeling the scent of the room. "Ah," I uttered and walked towards the couch.
I walked towards the bar counter and poured myself a glass of wine. One thing I hate is lies.
"Abadon" I called my most trusted man and before I blinked my eyes, he appeared in my room.
"Sire!" Abadon bowed slightly in respect. I sipped from the glass of wine and said, "Keep an eye on the prison for me"
"Okay sir" Abadon responded, but he vanished out of my room after getting an order from me this time. He stood as if he was waiting for me to say something else.
"Anything you want to say?" I asked and turned to face him, but he shook his head
"Then leave," I ordered and before I could blink my eyes, he vanished out of the room, leaving me in the silent room.
I closed my eyes and imagined my hands on Selene's hips. Damn!!!! I want that girl.
I was feeling restless, and I wanted to claim her this very minute, but she kept resisting me and she gave me no choice but to lock her up. She was becoming a nuisance, and I had to teach her a simple lesson.
A knock on the door caught my attention, causing me to groan. "Who the fuck is that?" I asked with a frown on my face.
"it's Venia, open the door please," I heard Venia's voice from the door.
"Get lost," I said coldly. I wanted to be alone, but Venia decided to disturb me at such a sensitive moment.
"What?" Venia asked
"Get lost, they were no water in my mouth when I said it" I responded and groaned, "Please open the door, Devon, you need someone beside you and I'm the only one who knows you more than anyone Devon, I understand you," Venia said but I ignored her
"Say something, Devon," she uttered, causing me to stand to my feet, and I made my way to the door. I opened the door and came to face Venia. "Don't let me repeat myself," I said coldly and slammed the door in her face.
I heard her gasp, and soon she walked away from the room. I staggered backward, feeling powerful yet lonely, and a dry laugh escaped my lips.
