Bab 60: Unraveling the Threads

The aftermath of the strike left us all standing in the silence of the mansion, the air thick with tension. The last echoes of gunfire faded into the night, but the weight of what we had just done lingered. Our target was dead, but Maria's forces were still out there, and this was just one move in the larger game.

Dante stood at the center of the room, his face unreadable. His fists clenched at his sides as he scanned the wreckage, his sharp eyes already calculating the next steps. I could feel the same unease stirring in my chest, an unsettling knowledge that this wasn't over. This was just the beginning.

"What now?" Matteo asked, his voice breaking the silence. He looked at Dante, awaiting orders, but his gaze kept flickering back to me as if waiting for me to say something. He knew the importance of this moment, the significance of the message we had just sent. We weren't just eliminating a threat; we were declaring war.

Dante turned slowly, his gaze dark but resolute. "Now, we prepare for what's coming. Maria won't take this lying down, and neither will her allies. We hit them where it hurts, and we do it quickly."

I stepped forward, my heart racing. "We can't just sit back and wait for her to retaliate. We need to strike again—before she has a chance to regroup."

Dante's eyes flicked to me, and for a moment, I saw a flash of something—respect, maybe, or something deeper. "You're right. We don't wait. We move."

He gave Matteo a sharp look, and without another word, Matteo stepped away, already making calls and relaying orders to the men. It was clear that the wheels were already in motion, but there was something else gnawing at me. A question I couldn't shake.

I approached Dante, my voice low but urgent. "Do you think she knows about me? About us?"

He looked at me, his gaze unwavering, but there was a flicker of something dark behind his eyes. "Maria knows more than she lets on. But she won't stop me. She won't stop us."

His words should have reassured me, but instead, they only heightened the sense of dread. Maria had always been a calculating, dangerous force, and if she was aware of our full strength, then it wouldn't be long before she retaliated. But we couldn't back down now.

I took a deep breath, pushing the fear aside. "Then we need to hit her fast. We can't afford to wait."

Dante nodded, his hand finding mine. "We will. Together."

The Calm Before the Storm

The night seemed to stretch on forever. As we returned to the mansion, the weight of our actions hung heavy in the air. We had sent a message, but now we had to brace for the storm that would come. The mansion felt too quiet, the calm before the chaos that was sure to follow.

I stood on the balcony, looking out over the vast grounds. The moon was high in the sky, its pale light casting long shadows over the garden below. It was beautiful, but the beauty felt cold, distant, like a fleeting illusion.

Dante came up behind me, his presence a comfort but also a reminder of the tension that thrummed between us. He leaned against the railing next to me, his gaze fixed on the horizon.

"Are you worried?" he asked, his voice soft, but I could hear the edge in it, the weight of the question.

I shook my head. "Worried about what? About Maria's next move? I know she's coming. But I'm ready."

He studied me for a moment, his gaze piercing, as if searching for something beneath the surface. "You don't seem like the same woman who first walked into this world. There's strength in you now—strength I didn't see before."

I let out a small laugh, though it was tinged with bitterness. "I didn't have a choice. The world we live in doesn't give you the luxury of weakness. You either fight or you die."

Dante's hand found mine again, squeezing gently. "And you fight, Nelly. You fight with everything you have. I see that."

I turned to him, meeting his gaze head-on. "I'm not just fighting for you, Dante. I'm fighting for us. For our children. I won't let anyone threaten the life we've built."

He smiled a rare, genuine smile that made my heart skip a beat. "Then we'll fight together. And we'll win."

As his words hung in the air, I felt a surge of determination rises within me. This wasn't just about survival. This was about taking back control, about ensuring that nothing and no one could tear apart what we had fought so hard for. I wasn't just a pawn in this game—I was a player, and I was ready to take my place.

The Battle Begins

The next few days passed in a blur of preparation and strategy. Dante's command over his men was absolute, and everything moved with precision. We were preparing for the inevitable clash with Maria's forces, but I knew this time would be different. We weren't just reacting to her—this time, we were striking first.

I stood in the war room, my mind sharp and focused as I watched the maps on the table. The layout of Maria's territory was clear, but something was nagging at the back of my mind. I kept replaying everything in my head—the plan, the moves we were about to make—but I couldn't shake the feeling that we were missing something.

Dante walked in, his expression unreadable as he took in the scene before him. He nodded to Matteo, who was already briefing the men on the next phase of the operation. But as soon as his eyes met mine, all the noise and tension in the room seemed to fade away.

"We're ready," he said, his voice low but commanding.

I nodded, but my mind was elsewhere. "Are we sure about this? I mean, about hitting Maria's inner circle directly?"

Dante gave me a brief, almost amused smile. "It's the only way. We need to send her a message she can't ignore."

I didn't argue. I knew he was right. This was the final push. The war we had been avoiding was about to erupt, and there was no turning back.

---

The night was nearly upon us again. We had made our final preparations, and now it was time to put the plan into action. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I felt a surge of adrenaline course through my veins.

Dante's hand found mine once more, a reminder that we were in this together. And no matter what happened, we would face it as one.

We were ready.
