Bab 40:  A Second Chance, But Not Easily Earned

The city lights shimmered outside the hotel window, casting faint glimmers on the glass as I stood there, looking out at the world that felt so far away from the storm raging inside me. Every inch of me wanted to leave, to walk away from this madness, but something tethered me here. I couldn't put my finger on it. Maybe it was my lingering love for him, the one who had shattered my heart into pieces, or maybe it was the bitter satisfaction of seeing him fight for me when he had once let me go so easily.

I heard the door creak open behind me, and I didn't need to turn around to know who it was. His presence had a way of filling the space around him, commanding attention without a word. Dante.

I stood still, allowing the silence to settle between us. He didn't speak immediately, as if waiting for me to break the tension, but I remained quiet, unwilling to give in. I couldn't, not yet. Not after everything that had happened.

"You're still angry," he said, his voice low and rough. "I can feel it."

I didn't respond at first. What was there to say? Anger was an understatement for what I felt. It was deeper, more complicated. My emotions were a tangled mess of betrayal, confusion, and longing. I wanted to hate him, to walk away and never look back, but my heart… my heart still held on to the scraps of love that had once flourished between us.

I turned slowly to face him. His eyes, always so intense, flickered with something I couldn't quite read. Guilt? Desperation? Or was it something else entirely? Whatever it was, it only made me more uncertain about where we stood.

"You left me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper, but it carried all the weight of my hurt. "You left me when I needed you most."

He winced as if my words physically struck him. It was rare for him to show vulnerability, but in that moment, he did. His expression softened, his eyes darkening with regret. He stepped forward, slowly, almost cautiously, as if afraid to push me too far.

"I didn't want to leave you," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "But I was a coward. I thought I was doing what was best for you, but I was wrong. I should have stayed. I should have fought for you."

The sincerity in his words hit me like a punch to the gut. I had heard him say things like this before, but this time, there was no hint of arrogance, no defensiveness. There was only raw honesty. And for a moment, I almost believed him.

"But you didn't," I replied, my voice trembling. "And now... now everything's changed."

He nodded, his gaze never leaving mine. "I know. And I'm sorry for that. I've made mistakes. Big ones. But I'll do whatever it takes to make it right. If you'll let me."

A part of me wanted to scream at him, to tell him that it was too late, that he had no right to come back into my life after everything he had done. But another part of me… the part that still loved him, the part that still yearned for the man I once knew… that part wanted to believe him.

I shook my head, trying to clear the confusion swirling in my mind. "You think you can just waltz back into my life like nothing happened? Like I haven't spent the last two years trying to move on without you?"

His jaw clenched, but he didn't argue. He knew I was right. He had abandoned me when I was at my lowest, when I needed him the most. And now, after all this time, he thought he could fix things with a few words?

"I don't expect you to forgive me right away," he said quietly. "But I need you to know that I'm not the same man I was before. I've changed. I've spent every day since I left trying to figure out how I could fix this, how I could make you see that I still want you in my life. I still love you."

I swallowed hard, feeling my emotions threaten to overwhelm me. His words were like a balm to the wound he had created, but they weren't enough to erase the pain. Not yet. Maybe they never would be.

"I don't know if I can trust you again," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

The silence stretched between us as he absorbed my words, his face hardening with determination. Then, without a word, he stepped closer, closing the distance between us until there was barely an inch of space left. His presence was overwhelming, his energy suffocating in the best way possible.

He reached out slowly, his hand trembling slightly as he cupped my cheek. The touch was gentle, almost tentative, as if he feared I would pull away. But I didn't. I couldn't. My body still reacted to him in ways I couldn't explain, as if it remembered the way he used to hold me, the way he used to love me.

"I'm asking you to give me another chance," he said softly. "Not just for me, but for us. Because what we had… it wasn't just a phase. It was real. And I won't stop fighting for you, not now, not ever."

The sincerity in his eyes was impossible to ignore. But as much as I wanted to believe him, as much as I wanted to fall into his arms and pretend that everything would be okay, I couldn't. Not yet. Not until I was sure he wasn't just saying what I needed to hear to get me back.

"I need time," I said, stepping back, breaking the connection. "I need to figure things out."

Dante's expression faltered for a moment, but he didn't argue. He just nodded, the pain in his eyes evident, but he respected my decision. "I'll give you all the time you need," he said quietly.

I turned away, my heart heavy in my chest as I walked toward the door. Before I left, I paused, glancing over my shoulder at the man who had once been everything to me. "But don't think that you can win me back so easily," I added, my voice steady. "You have to prove that you're worthy of me. Again."

His lips quirked into a sad, almost resigned smile. "I'll prove it," he promised, his voice low and determined.

And with that, I stepped out of the room, leaving him standing there, a man broken by his own mistakes, but determined to fix them.
