Bab 23: Caught in the Crossfire

Maria's men closed in, their weapons gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights of the office. The tension in the room was suffocating, and my mind raced as I tried to think of a way out. Claire stood frozen beside me, her face pale, while Dante's expression was unreadable—a mask of calm determination despite the danger we were in.

Maria, ever the picture of elegance and menace, leaned casually against the edge of the desk, her crimson lips curling into a predatory smile. "Dante, I have to give you credit. It takes guts to infiltrate my sanctuary. But it seems you've underestimated me."

"I don't underestimate anyone," Dante replied coolly, his voice steady. "Least of all you."

Maria chuckled, her amusement laced with venom. "And yet, here you are. Caught red-handed." She gestured to her men. "Take them."

Before her men could act, Dante raised a hand, his commanding presence freezing them in their tracks. "Touch us, and you'll regret it."

Maria's smile faltered, and for a moment, I saw the flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. Dante had that effect on people, his unwavering confidence enough to make even the boldest hesitate.

"What are you playing at?" Maria demanded, her tone sharp.

Dante's lips curled into a faint smirk. "Do you think I'd come here without a plan? If anything happens to us, my men will release every piece of dirt we've uncovered on you to the authorities, your rivals, and the press. Your entire empire will crumble."

---

A Calculated Risk

Maria's eyes narrowed, and I could almost see the wheels turning in her mind. She wasn't the type to back down easily, but Dante had just thrown her into a corner. The room was silent as she considered her next move.

Finally, she let out a frustrated sigh and motioned for her men to lower their weapons. "You always were a gambler, Dante," she said, her tone laced with grudging admiration. "But let's say I believe you. What's your endgame here? Why go to all this trouble?"

Dante stepped forward, his movements slow and deliberate. "To end you. Your betrayal, your greed—it's gone too far. This isn't about business anymore, Maria. This is personal."

Maria's gaze flicked to me, and I felt the weight of her scrutiny. "Ah, I see. This is about her, isn't it?" She gestured toward me, her smile returning. "The woman who's managed to make you soft."

I bristled at her words but held my ground. "I'm not the reason you're losing control, Maria. That's all on you."

Her eyes darkened, and for a moment, I thought she might strike me. Instead, she turned back to Dante, her expression unreadable. "Fine. You've made your point. But if you think this is over, you're mistaken. I don't lose, Dante. Not to you, and certainly not to her."

---

A Temporary Escape

Maria waved her hand, and her men stepped aside, creating a path to the door. "Go," she said, her tone clipped. "But know this—I'll be watching. The next time we meet, there won't be any negotiations."

Dante didn't hesitate. He grabbed my hand, pulling me toward the door, with Claire close behind. As we stepped into the hallway, I cast one last glance over my shoulder, locking eyes with Maria. Her expression was a mix of fury and something else—something that sent a chill down my spine.

We didn't stop moving until we were outside, the cool night air hitting my face like a splash of water. Dante's men were waiting near the car, their weapons drawn as they scanned the area for threats.

"Let's go," Dante ordered, his voice tight.

Once we were safely inside the car and speeding away from the penthouse, I finally let out the breath I'd been holding. "What just happened back there?"

Dante didn't answer right away. His jaw was clenched, and his eyes were fixed on the road ahead. Finally, he said, "We bought ourselves some time. Nothing more."

---

The Aftermath

Back at the estate, the atmosphere was tense. The team gathered in the war room, where Claire immediately began analyzing the files we'd retrieved. Dante paced the room, his frustration evident in every movement.

"That could have gone better," Claire muttered, her fingers flying across the keyboard.

"We got what we needed," Dante said, though his tone was grim.

"Did we?" I asked, stepping forward. "Maria let us walk out of there. She's planning something—I know it."

Dante stopped pacing, turning to face me. "Of course she is. That's why we need to stay ahead of her."

"And how do we do that?"

He didn't answer, but the look in his eyes was enough to tell me he already had a plan.

---

Maria's Retaliation

The retaliation came sooner than expected. Just as dawn broke, an explosion rocked the estate, shattering windows and sending a plume of smoke into the sky.

"Get down!" Dante shouted, pulling me to the ground as debris rained down around us.

The sound of gunfire followed, and I could hear the shouts of Dante's men as they scrambled to defend the property. My heart pounded as I clung to Dante, my mind racing with fear and adrenaline.

"She didn't waste any time," I said, my voice trembling.

Dante's expression was grim. "I told you—she doesn't lose."

---

A Fierce Defense

Despite the chaos, Dante's men held their ground. The estate's defenses, carefully designed by Dante himself, proved to be formidable. By the time the attack subsided, Maria's forces had been driven back, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Dante helped me to my feet, his hands steady despite the tension in the air. "Are you hurt?"

I shook my head, though my body was trembling. "I'm fine. What about you?"

He nodded, his gaze scanning the damage around us. "We're fine. But this was just the beginning."

---

A Declaration of War

As the sun rose, illuminating the devastation, Dante gathered his men in the main hall. His presence commanded attention, and the room fell silent as he began to speak.

"Maria has declared war on us," he said, his voice steady but fierce. "She thinks she can intimidate us, break us. But she's wrong. We're going to hit her where it hurts, and we're going to take everything she holds dear."

The men cheered, their loyalty to Dante unwavering. But as I looked around the room, I couldn't help but wonder how many of them would survive the battles to come.

Dante turned to me, his expression softening. "Are you with me?"

I met his gaze, my fear giving way to determination. "Always."
