Just as the new farmlands were starting to show promising signs of growth and the coalition was making steady progress with its expansion efforts, nature threw a curveball at them in the form of unforeseen natural disasters.
One day, dark clouds began to gather ominously on the horizon. The coalition's weather monitoring system, which had been enhanced with the astronomical data and Zhao Yi's software upgrades, had predicted some rainfall but nothing like what was about to unfold. Before long, a torrential downpour began, accompanied by fierce winds that lashed at the buildings and fields.
The newly planted crops on the fertile plains were particularly vulnerable. The heavy rain pelted them, flattening many of the young shoots and washing away some of the carefully tilled soil. The makeshift irrigation channels that had been set up were quickly overwhelmed, and the fields turned into muddy swamps in some areas.
The situation in the abandoned city wasn't much better. The old buildings, despite the recent reinforcements, groaned under the force of the wind. Some roofs were torn off, and water started seeping into the interiors, threatening to damage the supplies that had been painstakingly salvaged and stored there.
The coalition's fishermen at the coastal area also faced a crisis. The storm whipped up the sea into a frenzy, making it impossible to go out and fish. Their small boats were tossed around like toys, and some were damaged despite being tied securely to the docks.
In the face of this disaster, the coalition sprang into action. Zhao Yi quickly gathered the engineers and technicians to assess the damage to the infrastructure. They used drones equipped with cameras to survey the full extent of the destruction across the different areas, sending back images that helped them prioritize which areas needed immediate attention.
The farmers rushed to the fields, trying to salvage what they could. They worked to shore up the remaining crops, building small barriers to prevent further soil erosion and using nets to protect the more delicate plants from the wind. They also began the process of draining the excess water from the fields, using buckets and whatever makeshift drainage tools they could find.
In the abandoned city, teams were organized to repair the damaged roofs and seal up the leaks. The scavengers scoured the city once again for any materials that could be used for these emergency repairs, like old tarps and pieces of metal sheeting.
The fishermen focused on repairing their boats and strengthening the docks. They knew that once the storm passed, they would need to get back out on the water as soon as possible to replenish the coalition's food supply.
As the storm finally began to subside, the full scale of the damage became clear. It was a significant setback for the coalition, but their spirit remained unbroken. They held meetings to discuss how to better prepare for such disasters in the future. Zhao Yi started working on improving the weather prediction system even further, incorporating more data sources and running more complex algorithms to detect early signs of extreme weather conditions.
The coalition also decided to set up emergency shelters in strategic locations that could serve as safe havens during future storms. They began stockpiling emergency supplies like food, water, and medical kits in these shelters. And they planned to conduct regular drills to ensure that everyone knew what to do when faced with another natural disaster, determined to bounce back stronger and more resilient than ever before.
