Bab 43: Training

The chilly morning air of Derby County's training ground nipped at David Jones's skin as he tightened his laces. He looked around at the sprawling green field, its dew-covered grass glistening under the faint winter sunlight. The date was February 9, 2020, and Derby County's squad was deep into the season, with a match looming just three days away. Having come off a two-day break, the team's training intensity was about to ramp up, and David knew it wouldn't be easy.

David was only 16 but already showed immense promise as a right winger. Confidence radiated from him, bordering on arrogance, but it was tempered by his love for training. He relished the grind, the sweat, and the challenge of pushing his limits. Today, however, he felt the weight of fatigue from the packed schedule bearing down on him. The rest of the squad was assembling around the field, chatting and stretching, their breaths forming tiny clouds in the cold air. Among them was Wayne Rooney, the player-coach of Derby County. His dual role as a mentor and teammate made him an integral part of the squad. Beside him stood Phillip Cocu, the assistant coach, overseeing the day's regimen.

As training began, David found himself paired with Jason Knight, his closest friend on the team. Jason, just two years older, was known for his relentless energy and infectious positivity. The two clicked naturally, often pushing each other to perform better.

"Feeling rusty after the break?" Jason asked, jogging in place.

David smirked. "Rusty doesn't even cover it. Feels like my legs are made of lead."

"Don't worry," Jason said with a grin. "After today, you'll feel like they're made of jelly instead."

Cocu's whistle pierced the cold air, signaling the team to start their warm-ups. For the next hour, the players went through a grueling regimen: sprints, ball control drills, and tactical exercises. Cocu's sharp instructions were complemented by Rooney's on-field guidance. David pushed himself hard, beads of sweat running down his face as he raced down the flanks, delivered crosses, and practiced cutting inside to take shots. Every drill was designed to simulate the intensity of a match, and David could feel his body protesting with every movement.

Rooney's voice carried across the field as he encouraged the younger players. "Keep your heads up! Match day's close, and we need to be sharper than ever!"

David stole a glance at Rooney during a short water break. Despite his years, Rooney moved with a fluidity and sharpness that belied his age. He wasn't just a player; he was a mentor, always pushing the team to their limits.

As the session progressed, the drills became more challenging. The team was split into smaller groups for scrimmages focusing on positional play. David was assigned to attack the wings, where he faced defenders trying to cut off his runs. It was a battle of speed, precision, and strategy. David reveled in the challenge, his quick feet and sharp instincts giving him an edge. He sent a pinpoint cross into the box that Martyn converted into a goal, earning an approving nod from Rooney.

"Good work, David," Rooney said. "But remember, when you're out wide, always keep your options open. Look for that second pass if the cross isn't on."

By the end of the scrimmage, David's muscles screamed in protest, and his lungs burned with exertion. He collapsed onto the grass, gulping air as Jason flopped down beside him.

"I don't know about you," Jason panted, "but I'm ready to sleep for a week."

David chuckled weakly. "No chance of that. We've got more drills tomorrow."

After the session, the players gathered around Cocu for a debrief. The coach emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and discipline in the days leading up to the match. As the players dispersed, Rooney approached David, who was still catching his breath.

"David," Rooney called, his tone serious but encouraging.

David straightened up, wiping sweat from his brow. "Yes, captain?"

Rooney gestured for him to walk with him. They strolled along the edge of the field, the fading sunlight casting long shadows.

"You've got talent," Rooney began, his voice measured. "No doubt about that. But have you ever thought about taking on more responsibility?" Rooney said getting a confused face from David
