Bab 4: Reincarnation
Instead of going to sleep like Raven suggested, Viktor kept awake as there was still one thing he had to do. It seems eating his devil fruit was the catalyst for unlocking something deep within the recesses of his mind. It turns out he was a reincarnator!
It seems that his brain subconsciously sealed his memories of his previous life for self-preservation. If he had his memories from the day he was born, his body probably wouldn't have been able to handle it and he would've died!
In another act of self- preservation, Viktor could only access bits and pieces of his previous life's memories. If he had full access to his memories, his brain would be flooded with new information and he could've died or at least develop some sort of mental illness like schizophrenia.
To be more specific, all he could piece together was that in his previous life, he lived on a planet called Earth and that world was vastly different from this one. On Earth, superpowers didn't exist, and the world was instead ruled through science and technology. Individual strength was meaningless and politics and money were how individuals amassed power.
Since Viktor is now a data human, he can processes everything into data, memories included.Thus, through the power of his devil fruit, he can finally access those memories. Viktor activated his devil fruit and was transported to his mindscape where all the information in his brain is stored.
Upon entering his mindscape, Viktor saw a large room with a gaming chair and a huge computer screen. On the computer screen there was a search bar on the top and a plethora of folders that stored information.
Viktor sat in the chair and clicked on the folder called memories. This folder was further divided into current and previous life's memories. The previous life's folder had all the memories organized by day from birth to death. For more specific information, there were folders that contained memories on subjects such as math and even the One Piece World.
Viktor tried to access the memory of his death first, but it was restricted. It turns out he had to go through his earliest memories first to be able to comprehend the later ones.
This also applied to the subject folders. After all, you can't understand Calculus without understanding Algebra.
For some reason, Viktor was drawn towards the folder that said One Piece World and clicked on it. He was shocked after he started to emerge himself in his memories. It turns out that the One Piece World in his memories was the world he was in right now!
However, as he was emerging himself, he was suddenly ejected from his memories and a warning flashed across the screen.
Error! Mental energy at 5%. Program terminated to prevent permanent brain damage.
Viktor was astonished by this and looked into the specifics of this message. What he read caused him to turn pale, " What the fuck?! I almost died today!"
It turns out that when Viktor fainted earlier that day, he almost fried his brain and died! Thankfully, after one near death experience, Viktor's brain subconsciously put a limiter on his devil fruit ability, which saved his life.
After going through the data on his energy usage and recovery, Viktor realized his mental energy recovered absurdly fast. It turns out that his body immediately processes food into energy and diverts that energy to his brain when his energy reserves fall below 15%.
In other words, he had an alternate version of life return that applied to his mental energy. Unfortunately, this only applied to his mental energy and his physical body still recovered normally. However, in the future, he should be able to apply life return to his physical body as well.
Thus, in order to learn at an accelerated pace, Viktor would need a lot of food. And his current food intake simply wouldn't cut it. He'd have to figure out a way to increase his food intake exponentially to take advantage of his new talent.
With this thought in mind, Viktor went to sleep. When he woke up the next day, he was determined to find a solution to his food problem.
After thinking for a bit, he figured he'd have to procure the extra food himself via hunting and fishing. Thankfully, after eating the devil fruit, he unlocked a new observation haki ability. He could now sense other living beings over a distance of 100 meters, which would help immensely while hunting and fishing.
Now, he just needed the supplies to hunt and fish. However, those supplies are expensive, so to get his supplies, he'd need some help and the orphanage was to poor to help him.
After some thought, he decided to ask Professor Jones for help since he already told him his food problems. He figured he could ask professor Jones for a job at the library sorting books to earn some extra cash.
As for information regarding hunting and fishing, he could ask him what books he should read on the subject.
To make sure professor Jones said yes, Viktor decided to enlist the help of Raven. Their double puppy dog pout worked wonders yesterday. Of course, if they tried bumming for food, it probably wouldn't work as professor Jones himself said it wouldn't. In this case, he's asking for the opportunity to earn food, so he had high hopes it would work.
Viktor then set off for Raven's room to enlist her help with a sheepish grin on his face. " Hey Raven, how are you doing?"
" I'm doing good. How about yourself. Wait a second, whats with that look on your face?You need my help with something, don't you? "
" How did you know? Er, I mean of course not. This is a mutually beneficial arrangement that could widen our horizons and lead to a better tomorrow. And this can only work if you embark on this journey together with me."
Raven deadpaned, " Dude, cut it out with the bullshit and tell me what you want from me."
Viktor sighed, " It seems I can't pull one over on you. OK, so I was thinking that since we don't get enough food, so I want to ask Professor Jones to give us jobs so we could earn extra money that we could use to purchase supplies to hunt and fish for extra food. "
" Why wouldn't we just use the money to purchase food? "
" It wouldn't be enough to purchase the food we'd require, especially the meat. Going to need a lot of meat. And you know how expensive meat is. "
" OK, but even if we get the supplies, how to you suppose we actually catch anything. If it was so easy, meat wouldn't be so expensive. "
" Oh, don't worry about that. It'll be super easy, barely an inconvenience."
" Oh, really?"
" Yeah, turns out one of my devil fruit abilities enables me to detect lifeforms within 100 meters of me. Coupled with my newfound precision, it'll be easy to hunt animals in the forest and locate the best fishing spots. As for any dangers in the forest, I'd be able to detect them ahead of time and avoid them."
Raven nodded her head in agreement, " OK, that could work. Let's head over to the library right now."
Viktor and Raven then headed over to the library and meet with professor Jones. Viktor started off their pitch by saying," Hey professor, remember us?"
" Yeah. You're the idiot that slept in the library and she's the one that tried to cover for you."
Viktor replied cheekily, " Yep, that's us.So anyway, after yesterday we've realized that we want to be able to eat more food, especially meat. Could you set us up with a job here at the library so we can earn extra money to buy food?"
Clover had a reluctant look on his face after hearing Viktor's request," I don't know, you guys are kind of young to get jobs. "
" Yesterday, I literally fainted from hunger, so its pretty clear I'm not getting enough to eat. Raven do the thing."
Viktor and Raven then unleashed their patented double puppy dog pout on him.
" Please, pretty, pretty, Pleaseeee!"
" Oh cmon, you can't use that on me again so soon. Although it's true that this is an opportunity for you guys to earn what you want instead of begging for it, but my answer is no."
Viktor figured this might happen, so he unleashed his trump card, begging, " We would ask our parents, but their dead and the matron simply doesn't have the means to help us. Please professor you're our last hope."
Professor Clover was shocked when he heard this, " Wow, you're even playing the orphan card. You've never played the orphan card. Fine, it's pretty clear how serious you are about this, so I'll set something up for you guys."
Before Viktor and Raven could celebrate, professor Jones adopted a stern look," Im willing to give you guys jobs, but I must warn you, when you're on the job, I won't treat you like kids, but as adults. This means no slacking and no sleeping either. Once that happens, the deal is off. Do you understand?
Viktor and Raven nodded and told him they understood. Professor Clover was satisfied with their response and began their on the job training immediately.
From that moment on, Viktor and Raven worked at the library. They used the funds to purchase equipment for hunting and fishing, which they used to great success and got the nutrients they needed to start their rise to the top.
