Bab 1: The Billionaire

Adrian Steele stood behind the massive glass wall that overlooked the skyline of New York City, the sun setting behind the skyscrapers casting a golden hue over everything. It was the kind of view that could take your breath away—if you weren't already accustomed to the high life. With perfectly slicked-back hair and tailored suits, he embodied the image of success and sophistication. At only twenty-eight years old, he was one of the youngest billionaires in the world, known for his innovative tech solutions and astute business acumen.
But behind the facade of wealth and power lurked a loneliness that was often ignored even by those closest to him. On the outside, people envied him, but few understood the sacrifices he made to reach the pinnacle of success. Friends were few and far between; trust was a luxury he couldn't afford in a world where deception lay just beneath the surface. As the head of Steele Tech, Adrian had built his empire from the ground up. His mind raced with plans for expansion, the latest innovations, and the need to stay one step ahead of his competitors. He had little time for relationships, and those he had been involved in were short-lived—built on the gratification of lust rather than love. He had no interest in falling in love, each day reaffirming his belief that emotions were nothing but distractions. He often whispered to himself that heartache and betrayal awaited those who dared to love.
"Adrian!" called a voice from the entrance of the sleek office. Marcus, his loyal assistant, walked in, urgency masked by an air of professionalism. "We have an upcoming charity gala next week. I think it would be a good opportunity to show your face, meet some prospective partners, and enhance your public image.
"Adrian sighed, pressed his fingertips against the mahogany desk, and leaned forward. He hated these events, where fake smiles and easy laughs cloaked hidden agendas. "Do I need to go? You know I prefer to stay behind the scenes."
"Yes, but you're not just another tech guru; you're a billionaire. Your presence is noticed—and expected. You're one of the most eligible bachelors in the city, after all," Marcus added, a hint of teasing in his voice.
"Eligible?" Adrian rolled his eyes, but a smirk crept onto his lips. "Sounds like a dating app tagline."
"Given your reputation, it might not be a bad idea to embrace it," Marcus shot back, his expression earnest. "You might even meet someone worthwhile amid all the corporate drones."
Adrian laughed at the idea but quickly shook his head. "I'm good, thanks. The business has always been my one true love." He turned back to the window, watching the last rays of sunlight disappear behind the horizon, a vibrant reminder of the fleeting nature of things.
"The gala is mandatory, Adrian," Marcus insisted, an authoritative tone slipping into his voice.
With a reluctant sigh, Adrian nodded. "Alright, fine. I'll be there. Just tell me when and where."
"Great! I'll forward you the details." Marcus smiled before exiting the room, leaving Adrian to his thoughts.
As night enveloped the city, Adrian switched on his computer and began sifting through emails. They ranged from potential partnerships to mundane business requests—nothing of personal importance. Just as he was about to lose himself in numbers and figures, a notification popped up on his screen. A familiar name flashed before him—Ethan Ray.
Ethan had been an up-and-coming CEO whom Adrian had never met personally but knew of through business circles. His family's company, Ray Industries, was renowned but reportedly struggling under Ethan's management. Adrian wondered how someone so competent could face such adversity; he had grown up in an age where business was war, and survival depended on strength.
An innate curiosity sparked within him; he clicked on Ethan's website, scrolling through the highlights of the company's history. Suddenly, a photograph caught his eye—a candid shot of Ethan at a fundraiser, his bright smile revealing a warmth Adrian rarely associated with business people. It struck a chord deep within him—something about the hope that the smile carried, perhaps. As he gazed at the image, Adrian felt an unusual urge to reach out. Maybe helping this CEO could be the rejuvenation he needed in his corporate life.
But before he could allow himself to delve further into those thoughts, he dismissed the notion, recognizing that any connection deeper than business was a path he had actively chosen to avoid. He leaned back in his chair, exhaling a breath he didn't realize he had been holding, and turned his attention back to the mails that awaited him.
Little did Adrian know that the forthcoming charity gala would change the trajectory of his carefully orchestrated life—one that had been void of emotional entanglements—and introduce him to a person who could ignite feelings he had long buried.
